Open Game Thread: Game 93 - A's vs. Rangers
The game becomes the secondary story tonight, that's for sure. In case you haven't heard, the A's traded Jason Kendall to the Chicago Cubs.
Dallas Braden and his 1-3 record and 6.08 ERA take on the Rangers and Jamey Wright with a 2-2 record and a 5.55 ERA.
It'll be interesting to see how the trade impacts the team. I mean, it isn't like the team could get any worse right about now, can it? From all published reports, Kendall was a popular figure in the clubhouse. We'll see if the guys sag even more.
Regardless, we turn the page tonight on the Kendall era to the Suzuki era. Here is the lineup fresh off the hands of the sweep of the Twins:
Buck
Stewart
Swisher
Cust
Crosby
Kotsay
Ellis
Scutaro
Suzuki
Chavez isn't in the lineup. Should the speculation begin? Not really. I'm betting he probably has a back issue or forearms or something.
The Rangers send out this lineup to face young Dallas Braden:
Lofton
Young
Teixeira
Sosa
Byrd
Laird
Wilkerson
Hairston
Metcalf
Hopefully Braden can actually stick this time.
LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!! LET THE SUZUKI ERA BEGIN!

Crosby is hitting 5?
IS there not ANYONE more qualified to hit 5th? EVERY player batting under Crosby has a higher batting average...
Crosby batting 5th?
This team really is a joke...
O and I could play better D at Third than Scutaro.
by chavyizdamn3 on Jul 16, 2007 6:50 PM PDT reply actions
it's mildly interesting, I guess
One could speculate the Geren was keeping BoCro in the #8 hole to take the pressure off of him (although a major league player hardly needs such babying) so now that he's performed so well hitting eighth it's time for a well-deserved promotion.
Oh, wait...

I wonder if Kendall winds up re-signing with the
A's come the offseason? Heh.
by Tyler Bleszinski on Jul 16, 2007 6:51 PM PDT reply actions
If he did so on the real cheap
and was willing to take the Melhuse bench status as the #2 behind Suzuki, I'd take him back. He's the perfect backup catcher except for the salary and playing everyday thing.
it would be really funny
if the a's break out offensively this game with crosby batting fifth and scutaro playing third. its almost as if geren decided that the lineup doesnt matter any more.
by oak1 on Jul 16, 2007 6:53 PM PDT reply actions
All I can say is:
I hope our 1-4 has a good night at the plate.
If Crosby in #5, we're showcasing him . . .
. . . hope he goes 4 for 4 tonight so that someone will trade for him ASAP!

i bet
he comes with the bases loaded 1 out in a critical situation and pokes a weak ground ball back to the pitcher.

Wait... I've seen that one before
It must be a repeat.
Free preview of EI on digital cable continues
The A's game should be on the first EI channel, but the White Sox-Indians game is running long. The A's game may start on another EI channel.
Do you know
And do we have to wait for the Indians game to be over?
by chavyizdamn3 on Jul 16, 2007 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions
Free preview lasts thru Wednesday
A lot of times when a game is running long they start a game on another channel, but that does not appear to be the case tonight, so apparently you do have to wait for the Indians game to end...then the A's game should appear on that same channel.
Do Suzukis 3 hits have to fair or foul . . .

ESPN just said Kendall traded for Sean Marshall
Is that right?
I thought it was Bowen and a reliever.
If Marshall, that's a major league ready pitcher.

And that folks...
is the ballgame. Braden, you might want to wait awhile before you unpack.
He's not pitched badly, and he certainly has
promise. I'd let him stick around, the season is done anyway.
No, he hasn't pitched badly.
He's wracked up quite a few K's to boot. But he better learn that these guys are the best of the best. He got lucky the last time he got Byrd twice on a changeup. Better learn not to go to the same well too often.
Andrew Brown sighting!
Braden Pitch Count
90 through 4.2?
That's a problem.
(beyond the 4-0 score)
Well. It looks like the same results with Braden
so we will need to find another option. If we aren't scoring any runs than it won't matter much anyway.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Jul 16, 2007 8:28 PM PDT reply actions
There really aren't any on our current roster.
We may as well run JoKe out there as it will be the same result and we are paying him a lot more. Komine and Windsor aren't any better either.
I guess this just shows that we need to make some great moves during the offseason. Loiaza should have had surgery at the beginning of the year because that might have made a huge difference.

NOOO..Tell Braden he has a few more starts coming
No need for "another option"; let's allow Braden to take a turn every fifth day for a month and see what he has in him.
Boy 5 runs...
seems like 50..but I am still ok. with today. At least we got rid of Kendall. But a question? Will we have to listen to Foss mourn every game for the rest of this season?

Very, very, VERY poor pitch selection
to Marlon Byrd. Byrd was going to be sitting on the changeup the entire at-bat, knowing Braden got him with it twice. No way do you throw a changeup for a strike this time. And that's not on Suzuki, that's on Curt Young, who just went to the mound to go over the game plan. Terrible pitch selection.
the sad thing is that after.......
the RANGERS sweep us we will only be 1.5 games out of last place ahhhhhhh.
