Rickey Henderson named Mets new hitting coach
No more Rickey comeback jokes as he's the hitting coach for the Mets.
NEW YORK -- Rickey Henderson is replacing Rick Down as hitting coach of the New York Mets starting Thursday.
Henderson, who had been a special instructor for the Mets this season, is a 10-time All-Star who set career records for stolen bases (1,406) and runs (2,295). He was the AL MVP in 1990.
The Mets' decision to make Henderson their hitting coach was first reported Wednesday night by Newsday on its Web site.
New York, which leads the NL East by two games over second-place Atlanta, is sixth in the NL with a .268 team batting average.

"... If they said we're going to push your Hall of Fame eligibility back and let you play, then I'm going to play. If they said you won't go to the Hall of Fame, but we'll let you play, I'm still going to play. I wouldn't care about the Hall of Fame."
"Usually when a player retires, they send you your pension," he said. "I ain't got no check that says I'm retired.
So when did I retire? Is it when baseball said I was retired or when I say it? I haven't said it."
Let Rickey Play! =)

If not for Rickey's coaching...
Jose Reyes = bust.
The A's should have kept him aboard in some capacity.

What makes a good hitting coach?
I see that >70% think Rickey will make a good hitting coach, so what exactly makes a good hitting coach?
I am a believer that hitting coaches basically don't matter at the major league level, so they basically get blamed when the hitting goes into a funk and get no kudos when the team hits well. They simply ride the wave of the team's success.

Jim Lefebevre and Merv Rettenmund
...were good A's hitting coaches. What they had in common was they were coaching Rickey, BigMac, Jose, Carney, Parker etc.

I think it's about 50/50...
Some players are influenced, either positively or negatively... and some players don't need one at all.
