Just another trade diary
Keeping in mind grover's admonitions to put some thought into trade diary's, I had a thought rolling around and wanted some AN opinions.
It seems lately that one of the bigger frustrations here at AN is over our shortstop. People want to trade him, release him, etc but the problem is that we cannot really do that until we find something better. As others have shown, the upcoming crop of free agent shortstops are as bad or worse then ours, and our minors does not offer much hope at that position either. That leaves a trade as the only real option, and we need to find a player that offers some upside, but also is someone we can acquire with our limited trade chips.
The player I would like to target is Wilson Betemit. Not exactly a big time impact name, but c'mon its not like we can get Reyes or Ramirez. Anyhow, even though Betemit has played mostly third base, he came up as a shortstop with the Braves and still plays there on occasion. Betemit currently finds himself in the Dodger Doghouse as he is batting near the mendoza line at .206. He has had 1 start since June 25th. The Dodgers currently are starting Loney, Kent, Furcal and Nomar in the infield with Martinez, Abreu and Saenz to back up, so they don't really need him. They also have Furcal long term and prospect Andy La Roche waiting in the minors to take over at third, so he really does not fit in their long term plans either. Finally, the Dodgers are in a playoff race, so would (in theory) be willing to move a guy that is just being used as a pinch hitter at this point. So this is why he could be available. Why do we want him?
Despite the low batting average, Betemit currently sports an .802 OPS (.827 vs righties) this season and last season had an OPS of .795 (.849 vs righties). These numbers are not bad for a shortstop and would far exceed Crosby's current production. Betemit is not young, but not old at 26 and still has some years of team control left. Best case scenario, we find ourselves a productive middle infielder for the future. Worst case scenario, maybe Crosby feels the pressure of having a guy brought in to take his job and actually realizes that he'd better start making some adjustments.
Anyway, what would it take to get him? This is a question I was hoping for some input from the "trade guru's" here at AN, but I do have some ideas. Seems the Dodgers have been hit with a small rash of pitching injuries lately (Schmidt, Wolf) and could possibly use another starting pitcher. If so, Kennedy might be able to nab us a guy that the Dodgers now seem to have no use for. A lefty swingman that could start or relieve is always useful to a playoff club, and the Dodgers are no exception to wanting to acquire good veteran arms for the stretch run -- just the kind of thing a Colletti ran team would want. They might also be looking for some OF depth (they have only Pierre, Gonzalez, Ethier and Kemp on their current 25 man roster). With 3 of those 4 being lefties, maybe a known lefty-mashing outfielder like Kielty could interest them? If any combination of those two players could get us Betemit, it seems like a low-risk investment.
Not sure this much text should really be devoted to a trade diary regarding Wilson Betemit, but I really want to come up with some ideas to make the roster better. Any option that is better then Crosby would make me happy right now.

Didn't we already get Betemit?
At the beginning of last year? His name was Antonio Perez then.

I really don't think that the problem is just SS
it is Chavy, Kendall, Kotsay at the moment. When you have 5 holes in an offense you will score about as many runs as the A'S

Chavez isn't a hole ...
he's just not the star we'd like him to be. We only have three holes ... things are bad enough, there's no need to exaggerate and depress us even more.

Chavy is a giant hole

Someone who doesn't have a good slugging
he's about league average with the bat. That's not good, but it's also not bad.

Betemit is a lot better than Perez,
and a lot better than Crosby. I like the idea but know we'd need to give more than Kennedy to get him. I wish we had allocated Loaiza money to O. Cabrera or E. Renteria when better FA shortstops were out there. Maybe we couldn't have afforded them but given what we're paying Kendall, Kotsay, and Loaiza, I sure wish that $$ had been put into a SS and that we could have dealt Crosby to shore up a different weakness.

Kennedy is still worth something
to a team looking to buy. Not sure if the Dodgers are that team. He has something like
11/16 quality starts (if you count one ER in 5 inn as a quality start)his ERA of 4.45 is still good for the number 4 starters for NY, Clev, Minn, Detroit, Atlanta and Arizona.
SS is a hard postion to trade for however but i think a number four starter and Bobby for a backup SS or AAA with lots of potential could get it done for it for a team that would want to sign Kennedy to a deal after this season.
How much is a young healthy lefty number three/four starter going to be worth in next years market? If im his agent I start the bidding at 7mill a season for 3 years and watch the feeding frenzy begin.

Sorry, I didn't realize you meant
Kennedy AND Crosby. Sure, that would get you Betemit.
by Nico on Jul 10, 2007 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, I was not talking Crosby
I think he still has enough perceived value to possibly net Betemit on his own, but the Dodgers do not need a shortstop.
I still think that Kennedy with one more piece might be able to land Betemit, especially with as little as the Dodgers think of him right now.
The Dodgers gave up Baez and Willy Aybar to get him, and his value has to be less then that now. Maybe Calero for Betemit?

Oh, I was going on
"but i think a number four starter and Bobby" as referring to Kennedy and Crosby, but you're right--since the LAD don't need a SS that isn't vyable anyway. More generally, though, Kennedy + Crosby could get you value in return, if to the right team, i.e. a team that needs a starter and a SS and doesn't have access to Crosby's stats.

Here's an idea...
There are whispers that the Braves might be looking to move Rentaria before the 2008 season because they may have homegrown options for the middle infield.
Rentaria is owed $9 million in 2008 BUT Boston is on the hook for $3 million of that. There is also an $11 million club option for 2009, and if a team chooses to decline that option than the Red Sox cover the whole of the $3 million buy-out. The flip side is if his team picks up Renteria's '09 option they're on the hook for the whole $11 million.
I have no idea how good Rentaria's defense has been this year, anyone have some info?
by grover on Jul 10, 2007 5:53 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't care--get him! NOW!
<Of course, if you want Renteria just have dinner at Applebees...>
by Nico on Jul 10, 2007 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sounds good
The two problems I see: First, he would take a lot to get with there being so few shortstops out there (the Braves are pretty shrewd) and two it really would be a Rent-aria.

A's Fan in LA
Do you know how down (if at all) LA is on Andy Laroche. How bout we ship them Chavy + Joe K for Betemit and Laroche. Colletti is so dumb this just might work.
by awesomer on Jul 10, 2007 9:18 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
The Dodgers still really like LaRoche
They just don't think he is quite ready yet. They would not move him unless they got a major impact bat or front line starting pitcher.
The question would be if the Dodgers would see Chavez as still a major impact bat.

Adam Dunn
Beane should get in the bidding for him.

at the same time, and put him at SS?

But seriously ...let's go shopping at the Cinci Reds Store.

We should go after Alex Gonzales for SS--
Sporting News' scouting report: "A pull-happy hitter with limited power and little patience. Has good strength, but that does not translate into game power. Never has hit better than .277. Has the tools to be a better hitter but does not use them. Makes no situational adjustments; easy to set up."
He sounds perfect! No wait, not perfect: Familiar.

The problem on bidding for Dunn
is that he becomes a free agent after this season if he is traded. I don't think a rental is what we are looking for now. Besides, we already have the poor man's Dunn in Jack Cust.

I don't know if Betemit is/isn't the answer
But a righty-mashing SS is really all we need. Murphy absolutely crushes lefties, so we could just have a platoon.
Guy I've liked is Akinori Iwamura; he's another natural 3b who said he'd play SS for a team (though we could trade Chavvy for a SS after acquiring him). The Drays have Zoborist, Wiggington, Upton (for now) in their infield so Iwamura may move (or Upton can go to the OF). He would cost significantly more than Betemit and his D is probably worse, but I'm just throwing the name out there.

How about Jimmy Rollins? A Bay Area Native.

My dream, actually, is Tejada,
who brings both the skills and the spirit the A's need--and the O's would like to move him. We have Harden, Kennedy, Johnson, and Crosby to offer...Is there is deal there? Pleeeease?
by Nico on Jul 11, 2007 9:30 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Post-trade lineup,
even if we deal all 4 for Miggy:
Stewart - LF (? for 2008)
Buck - RF
Swisher - 1B
Tejada - SS
Cust - DH
Chavez - 3B
Ellis - 2B
Kotsay - CF
Kendall - C (not back for 2008)
Drool.
Rotation still has Haren, Blanton, Gaudin, Loaiza, DiNardo; bullpen still has Street, Duke, and Casilla.
by Nico on Jul 11, 2007 9:34 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
My issue with this
Is that I think Tejada is dramatically overrated by most baseball fans these days. I know we all get nostalgic for those magical months in 2002, but the guy is past his prime. His power numbers were WAY down this year before he got hurt and he never walked a lot. His OPS this year is .784, which is better than Crosby, to be sure, but not superstar quality anymore. Certainly not worth trading half our team away.
I'm afraid he will continue to decline. Also, his player page says he's 31, but is that really true? Isn't it likely, or at least possible, that he's actually closer to 33 or 34?
by Crosbino on Jul 11, 2007 10:38 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I guess my hunch is that
Miggy's decline is partly a decline in spirit and that he could be rejuvenated. If he's 31, I'd take my chances. If he's 34, I wouldn't. Which one he is, only he and some guy named Jairo Garcia know.

I'd do Johnson for Baker
This team wins on its starting pitching and won't contend until it stops running Kennedy and DiNardo out there 40% of the time. Add Baker, and eventually Loaiza, and you've got a solid rotation again--thus, I think Johnson for Baker could actually improve the team for 2007.
Meanwhile, Barton can provide everything Johnson has except for the power, but he'll likely post as good or better an OBP, and a better AVG, even in his rookie season.
Do it.
by Nico on Jul 11, 2007 9:39 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Unless Baker isn't going to be good,
in which case please psychically know that and don't do it.
by Nico on Jul 11, 2007 9:40 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, I don't have a great sense of
how to project pitchers from looking at their minor league numbers, but he's been pretty terrible in the majors so far. He wouldn't be an upgrade over Kennedy or DiNardo this year.

Good diary
Glad to see people actually suggesting names of SS we could try to get. The higher-traffic diaries are full of "trade Crosby!" but never anything about who to replace him with.
by iglew on Jul 11, 2007 2:25 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I think Betemit is a solid option
But he's always been a "potential" guy, so he's pretty much the same as Bobby Crosby. I'd like him, but i wouldn't trade that much to get him. Kennedy would be nice, but I think that the A"s could get more for Kennedy than just Betemit.
Did somebody say Rollins? Yeah, it would take a WHOLE lot to get that Bay Area native on the Athletics. Eric Chavez? (they have comparable contracts). I'd rather not trade Chavez and that way have the left side of the infield locked up, but i really don't see Philly trading Rollins since they are in contention right now. Maybe a little later, but I still doubt it. It would take a shitload..
Gaudin and Crosby for Rollins and a pitching prospect? Or how about this for a blockbuster:
Gaudin, Crosby, Kotsay, and Casilla (they need a closer unless they are stupid enough to permanently leave Brett Myers there) for Rollins, Victorino and High A RHP Joshua Outman. Too much?
by ohad on Jul 11, 2007 8:14 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree with that
but I guess Betemit is a "potential" guy that has actually put up decent numbers the last few years whereas Crosby is the opposite. Even if what we see is what we get with Betemit, that is a pretty big offensive upgrade.
