At least Haren can get the win

I don't see why he should pitch another inning. He's already probably given all that he has. Why extend him?

the reason haren goes 1 more

is because of the alternative. lead is only 0.8 embrees.

casilla could go 2, but if he can be limited to 1 he is available tomorrow too.

balancing today and tomorrow...always tough.

Electronic strike zone

Just a buzzer in the pocket.  If it buzzes, call a strike.  No buzz, not a strike.

I'm surprised there are night games.  They didn't use electricity in 1890!  Why now??!!  Let's keep the game "traditional".

Rename Fremont, CA, to Philadelphia, CA. "Philadelphia Athletics" will sound great.

you could but you would lose

This is why baseball managers are so bad. Danny Haren struggled all afternoon and you're going to leave him in with 93 pitches? But yes I'm the idiot. What was I thinking? Personally I'd rather Danny struggle for 5 innigns and get the win. Lord knows with all his no decisions he's earned it. He's pitched like an ace. The one day he doesn't you overuse him bloating his era and not trusting your pen to finish a job you know Danny can't finish? Please.

by pookeyguru on Jul 1, 2007 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

We don't have any help right now. Please give

me your rundown of who you would pitch the rest of the game- inning by inning.  A struggling Haren is better than anything else we've got right now.  Especially when you consider that there are 3 more innings to go.

"I still believe in 2007!"

by ohtobe21likehuston on Jul 1, 2007 12:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Unless Danny throws 140 pitches that argument

holds no merit. First off you're saying he doesn't trust the pen which is understandable. But when your starter doesn't go his requisite 7 innings after a briliant start by Gaudin YOU HAVE TO ADJUST. If Bob Geren doesn't have the bullpen to finish the game off that isn't his fault. Now you point the finger back to Billy Beane and David Forst. It's Geren's job to manage the bullpen. It's Beane and Forst's to make sure that Geren has that talent on hand. That argument, while understandable, holds no merit and covers up organizational deficiencies. Braden Castilla Flores Embree Marshall or Lewis is your pen. That isn't Geren's fault again. Unless his handling of the other Pen Members led to their injuries, which would mostly be on the organization and Curt Young at this point, directly I can't fault Geren for everything. This organization has serious holes and no amount of bullshit will ever be able to hide it. As I said you will lose this argument every time.

by pookeyguru on Jul 1, 2007 12:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But you said "Geren is an idiot."

I agree with you on the organization being the problem but that's not what you said.

"I still believe in 2007!"

by ohtobe21likehuston on Jul 1, 2007 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What i said WAS

Geren should go to his pen. I gave the reasons why he should have. You said he didn't trust his pen. I said that isn't Geren's problem. That is the organizations. I gave my reasons why. Now you're saying that's not what I said when that is all part of what I said in the first place. It's Geren's fault for not taking out Haren. It's the organization's fault for not having better relievers. There is a difference.

by pookeyguru on Jul 1, 2007 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Are you saying that the crappy relievers that BB

is giving him are actually better options then?  Who would you pitch in the 7th, 8th & 9th specifically?

"I still believe in 2007!"

by ohtobe21likehuston on Jul 1, 2007 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm saying Killing Danny Haren

IS NOT A GOOD OPTION. How hard is this to understand? What are we talking e=mc2 here? I stated who the pen guys are? I don't know who they should use. Braden Casilla and Embree I guess. None of them pitched yesterday and you should try to win today I suppose. I'm saying that Bob Geren can't manage every game to win by killing Danny Haren to try and stretch him because of crappy relievers. If all Danny can give you is 5 than that's all Danny can give you. The relievers have nothing to do with it. I'm sorry if that is too hard to understand. That may be hard for you to accept but that's the reality of this group. They aren't good enough to win as presently constituted. Killing Danny Haren to accomplish comfort is always the wrong thing to do. IT'S CALLED GIVING A CY YOUNG CALIBER PITCHER AN ARM INJURY.

by pookeyguru on Jul 1, 2007 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't see how 93 pitches is gonna "kill" him.

I also don't claim to know everything.  I was just asking what your strategy was in this situation since you called Geren an idiot.  That's all.

I think this 5-run outing should reflect on Kendall just as much as the shutout did yesterday. The bad with the good, etc.

In my completely biased, unfounded, unsourced opinion, I believe Suzuki would have held the Yankees to 2 runs.

Louis, Louis, Louis ...

You demonstrate your fundamental misunderstanding of the KME. The "M" only ever works to the benefit of the K; and you can't engage in sophomoric reversals of terms just to attribute M to the K of your choice -- M always accrues with veteranness and grittitude.

If Suzuki had started behind the plate today, the Yankees would have undoubtedly scored at least 42 runs off of Haren.

why go with the "best pitcher/highest leverage"?

I'm not fo any strong opinion one way on the other re letting Haren stay in/bringing in Braden/bringing in Casilla ... but I think there's a decent case to be made for using the "upside-down" best-pitcher-in-the-highest-leverage-situation argument in the bottom of the 6th. Use Casilla to get out of the inning and through the 7th, and then the mopup guys in the 8th/9th.

Time for a change of scenery for Crosby

I think there's some talent there...but I've concluded that it will take a whole new set of minds (i.e. those found in another organization) to turn the potential into performance.

First off

I dont pick fights on the blog. I write diaries that apparently you don't agree with. Secondly stating an opinion isn't starting a fight. Just because it isn't popular doesn't mean I'm picking a fight. I said BEFORE THE BOTTOM OF THE 6TH Haren should have done that. It's not like I changed my opinion after 2 guys got on or anything. Jesus don't you understand what criticism is? I'm sorry you don't agree (not that i give a shit about that) but that's your problem not mine.

by pookeyguru on Jul 1, 2007 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Do you mean "Geren should have done that"?

My point is that Geren is not an idiot.  I don't think there is any need to say it once then capitalize it later- "GEREN IS A FRIGGIN IDIOT!" -because he's done a pretty good job so far and has had little to work with.  Blame the front office for personnel issues but how do you blame the manager for trying to cover up those deficiencies when he is trying to win a ball game?  Every day that he dodges a bullet it gives us a better chance to make the playoffs when we should have been out of it long ago.  I sure am glad he is our manager.

I enjoy hearing everyone's opinion but your tone certainly is questionable.  I think there are better ways to skin a cat than using ALL CAPS as if I'm a child and don't understand.  I get what you are saying but please use better judgment when delivering your analysis.  People are respectful to each other on AN and I think you are pushing that line a bit.

Bob Geren IS NOT

a worthwhile manager yet. Sure he hasn't had much to work with but that is like saying Ken Macha did a good job managing WHEN he didnt. If you don't like that that's fine. It's a matter of opinion. I'm stating my opinion, and apparently too brusque for you, in a way you don't appreciate. That's fine too except there's one thing. I never said it to anybody in particular. If you choose to say my points are incorrect that's fine but you have yet to really say much of anything other than blah blah and let it go. You mostly attack my usage of words than address the actual point. You're very effective being a snob but very short on baseball knowledge. Good Day.

by pookeyguru on Jul 1, 2007 6:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Baseball "knowledge?"

Funny... I haven't read anything from you that shows that you are knowledgable on the subject either.  I pointed out that I would have used Haren at 93 pitches rather than use a AAA pitcher with less talent.  Haren on a horrible day is still better than Braden, Flores or Marshall on normal occassions.  You said that Geren was going to "kill" Haren at 93 pitches but that simply isn't true.  Geren takes an average of the pitch counts over 3 outings and he was not risking Haren's arm in any way.  You are misinformed if you believe that he was going to "kill" him or his arm.

Minimizing the use of crappy pitchers in the bullpen is also an intelligent move by Geren.  He is responsible for wins/losses regardless of what the front office provides.  Would he be fired if this team misses the playoffs?  Of course not but he has probably "overachieved" by a wide, wide margin so far this year with the misfits that he has been given.

You said that Embree should and shouldn't have been used yesterday.  Which is it?

"I still believe in 2007!"

Haren's last 9 outings averaged to 108, 113, 106

pitches per 3-game blocks.  What looks out of place about yesterday's outing since he topped out at 101 pitches representing the lowest pitch count over his last 3 starts?

by pookeyguru on Jul 1, 2007 1:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you had relievers that weren't injured...

...you wouldn't be just 3 games over .500, either.

It wasn't about using Embree because he's the only one who can keep the lead. It was about using him because the last time he pitched was on the 26th and you don't let closers go too long between outings.

If you hold him out today figuring they might need him tomorrow, then they don't need him tomorrow, then that's another day or two without pitching.

Do you get that, or do you make the same complaint tomorrow night if Geren uses him in a non-save situation?

Bottom of the 9th - Baseball photojournalism by James Venes

by Flashfire on Jul 1, 2007 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's fine

But today is the 1st. Embree had been used a ton. I get there is a 3 day all star break coming up too which the A's ,and the pen, badly need. That being said that's fine I understand that. But if Embree can't close a game after 6 days off then there is something wrong too. That was the same point about Huston Street used in years past then ken macha would use him for 2 inning stretches when it was obvious Huston was not that kind of pitcher. I'm not worried about Embree in that respect because he's 37 years old. That being said your point of a fine line is understandable. But at what point does that fine line become overuse when it's clear that Street Duke Calero have suffered similar fates?

you have got to get Embree his confidence back and this is the perfect situation to do it in.

by marco magic on Jul 1, 2007 1:28 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

agreed, i'd rather see him pitch like this with

a six-run lead than in a close 2-1 game too.

by buddahead9 on Jul 1, 2007 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

perfect situation

to try to do it, but so far this is not a confidence builder.

Game over.
Don't worry, it's only a safety problem.

Okay
At least Embree got a DP ball at the end. Thank god. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

3-7 on the trip sucks, but 2 of 3 in Yankee...

...Stadium is always good.

3-7 ends up being okay after the way it started.

Let's get home and kick some ASS!

I like that there were 54,266 Yankee fans

that are pissed off about a 200+ mil payroll losing to our modest 80 mil.  Awesome.

Team depends on not doing dumb deals

Like the ones for the Crotsay Sisters.  And to tell you how much of a "non-entity" Noaiza, he has fallen totally off the bad deal list. A separate list reserved for the worst deals in organizational history.

Billy is not infallible - we all know that.  But where he succeeds and looks comparatively like a "genius" (vs. other sheep GMs) is in the problem-fixing space, even if the problems were entirely of his own making.  The Bradley move was genius.  Stewart is better and cheaper.  Period.  The tired act - Bradley's game of woosing-out and getting excessive rest for marginal injuries  - was old last year.  Totally unacceptable this year and frankly, totally unacceptable at the MLB level.

But Billy has failed with the Crotsay Sisters and Loaiza.  This team needs (no, absolutely depends on) buying assets the market undervalues with resources obtained when selling assets the market overvalues.  The Crotsay Sister/Noaiza disasters require another genius work-out move (a la Rhodes for Kendall).  Let's see if Billy really has the balls to move these three losers and their albatrossian contracts.  For some reason, I am really doubting him on this.

lol @ Crotsay Sisters

never heard that one before.

"We were s--, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
