Open Game Thread: Game 80 - A's at New York
I think someone put Tim Goodman's Cranky Pants in my closet last night. Man, these things itch.
Let's see: a junk-tossing rookie lefty starting against the A's? Yeah, that bodes well.
Dept. of WTF?!?: day game after a night game, no one as thenthitive as Joe Blanton pitching, so of course ... Kendall's starting.
Geren goes with the same loaf of bread, but sliced ... sideways! Yeah, I know: injuries have basically dictated that we have no one to sub in as a starter.
Swisher, despite some murmurings that he might have been too banged-up to play, is still in the lineup. You know, given how he's been hitting of late, plus the banged-up-ed-ness, plus hardly having had any days off at all this season ... oh, never mind. It doesn't matter. We're all going to ... do something. I don't care what.
Lineups:
A's
Stewart LF
Ellis 2B
Swisher RF
Cust DH
Chavez 3B
Johnson 1B
Crosby SS
Kotsay CF
Kendall C
New York
Damon DH
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Posada C
Matsui LF
Cabrera CF
Cano 2B
Phillips 1B
Pitching for the A's: Chad Gaudin, who tries to stop the stepwise upward progression of his ERA; for the Yankees: Kei Igawa, who tries to ... uh, not be Kei Igawa so much.

Do try and avoid Larry Davis. Older people don't heal as fast you know.
Nice to see Crosby in the lineup again.

Sorry Geren but when do you change things up? Crosby over Scutaro? Put in Marco. Swisher needs a long talk on not trying to homer every AB. For once go opposite feild swish. Also Geren Igawa doesn't hold runners very well so steal and hit and run. Enough ranting on with the game
impatient a's
on this road trip. and its not just the usual suspects like Kotsay and Chavez. Swisher, Ellis and DJ have caught the bug as well.

Come on Go-Dan! We may need perfection.

Nope. We are expecting him to fail
so he will succeed. If that works then maybe we should start being really negative and see if that helps end this skid.

kendal paycutt
Kendal says he is willing to comeback next year with a paycut. How about a 10 million paycut. I would take him back next year but no more than 3 million and share duties with suzuki. He says he wants to play everyday. I guess ron washington is ready to bring him to texas.
no thanks
i wouldnt take him for the major league minimum

Maybe Pittsburgh will do 5 million again?
plus your 10 mil pay cut. If so, we could pay him minus 2 mil and sign another catcher to start.

Gaudin - 9 pitches, 8 for strikes, no hits
Keep it up another 8 innings and just MAYBE we'll have an outside chance of winning.
what is with everyone
taking only 3 pitches against a pitcher who has had serious control problems early in the season
by oak1 on Jun 30, 2007 10:24 AM PDT reply actions
a better question would be...
why is Crosby batting at all?
Because Kendall is
that's the problem with the offense now - we have too many guys that should be hitting 9th

We make everyone look like a "CY" candidate.
I would rather face Johan Santana than some of these obscure guys with 6+ ERA's that we can't hit.

Oh come on...
The game actually was very close last night. And there's no score! How can you call the loss?
Did Kendall shave his head also?
I must have missed it...
haven't been able to watch the last couple of weeks or so....I see it hasn't improved his hitting. Although now I will be able to see the games due to my hours changing at work. I haven't worked regular day hours since 1986. This is going to be...difficult.
Yeah...
I was wondering about that huge glowing orb...I was under the impression one should avoid the light...or so say the near death returnee's....
NO FRICKING WAY...Babe Kendall?
He drives me crazy.
Because he doesn't learn. and he has so much potential that he will never reach because he won't adjust his hitting.
8 up, 8 down against
This sucks that it's blacked out
makes absolutely NO SENSE! The Fox game isn't on until noon! What gives? SOUNDS LIKE I'm not missing anything, though.

I'm sad that Buck shaved his head. I liked his hair. :(
Did anyone else notice that Swisher is wearing white sunglasses? Can't even stand to have the blackness of regular sunglasses...
And Kendall, trying to one-up Suzuki... my goodness.
Haven't noticed yet, but
The white sunglasses could actually be a tribute to Milton Bradley's stunner shades.

Kuiper said that the Yankees took infield practice before the game today. That's pretty much unheard of these days, a real throwback...no one takes pregame infield practice anymore. Kinda cool, actually.

DJ
I know folks have been down on DJ but since Swisher's slump, as of today, DJ and Swisher have almost identical OPS.
Why does it sound like the A's broadcast is pro-
Yankees? Nothing like sending positive vibes to the opposing team.
Two A-Rod things I'd actually root for:
- Breaking Barry Bonds' HR record
- Punching Angel Hernandez
Chad is making Hernandez and A-rod
his personal bitches.
More "luck-turning" evidence:
yes
If one of our hits is hugging the foul line but stays fair (JK's HR) that would be another sign. I need other signs tonight with the Angels before getting too excited.
