Padres acquire Milton Bradley
[EDITOR'S NOTE: The Milton Bradley saga is now over. Bradley has been traded to San Diego. I wonder what kind of reception he's going to get in Los Angeles? Remember, Bradley is a DePodesta guy and DePo now works for the Padres. - Blez]
Per Rotoworld:
The Padres have reportedly acquired Milton Bradley from the A's for a pitching prospect.
It could be a very nice pickup if Bradley shows up and is ready to play, and if not, well, the Padres can still get by with Jose Cruz Jr. and company in left field. Bradley likely will get a chance to play regularly , leaving Cruz with far less playing time for the short-term.

SD is a much better place to play than KC is.
Have a feeling Milton will magically heal from his last injury.
Let's hope they're taking his salary too.
Prospect
I am killing myself looking for who we got for him, especially since I know a little about the San Diego minor leaguers. Not sure if they just don't know who it is, or they just don't care enough to say who it is.

Well, the real question
Better than Flores?
by MobiusKlein on Jun 28, 2007 11:24 PM PDT up reply actions
Not Flores
He should make the team; you don`t have to be better then Ron Flores, just Collby Lewis.

way to stay positive
I agree with you guys. I'm kinda sad to see old Milton go, he hit great against the Twins in the ALDS. But had too many injuries... too much up and down.
but with Kielty, Barton! and Piazza in the minors, we've got plenty of hitters coming up. Just gotta catch the Tigers/Indians for the Wild Card....

I got this through
SBN blog Gaslamp Ball, but apparently it looks like Bradley may make his first start with the Padres at Dodger Stadium.
That makes it intriguing. I wonder if he'll throw bottles at anyone?
Oh and yeah, that oblique injury suddenly seems all better now that Kansas City isn't involved.

RHP Andrew Brown
A comment made in the thread you linked to suggests that the player was RHP Andrew Brown. He is a reliever at Triple-A Portland who has a 2.78 ERA this year with 43:15 K:BB in 35 2/3 innings. His career numbers are very good as well. I think this makes it (assuming this IS the player we got, which certianly hasn't been confirmed) third time he has been traded since he was drafted in 1999.
Honestly I am just happy we didn't get stuck with nothing but his salary.

Yeah, the nun-raping charge
As far as I know
That case really wasn't as "black and white" as everyone originally thought.
just so long as he doesn't make a habit of it
that's the conventional response
you guys are cracking me up
I don't usually comment, but you nun-raping bastards are cracking me up. thanks. :>

Trade
It seems perfectly plausible if that is who we got - just the type of player we needed. Not sure there is a catch, especially with Billy working with DePo.
by Brian Durack on Jun 28, 2007 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions
Or not...
Check that, I think I misread the comment, although I am not too sure even after reading it over a few more times.
Um, can we have him anyway, please?
by Brian Durack on Jun 28, 2007 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions
could we trade him to some WV team for ...
... John Brown's body?
Please don't Harp on this anymore
I think it's the other Andrew Brown
This guy makes more sense for the A's

note nickname: "Gimpy". Very low salary, too.

Gimpy
Sure he's dead, but odds are he is healthier than Bradley.
by Brian Durack on Jun 28, 2007 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions
And he won't throw chairs!
Trouble is, he's maintained an uncanny silence in the locker room.
by One won lost won on Jun 28, 2007 10:02 PM PDT up reply actions
Or maybe ...
... this guy?
He is said to have "Hall of Fame" stuff, and looks like a better, well, demographic fit for our team.
by The Dogfather on Jun 29, 2007 6:27 AM PDT up reply actions
Or
it is pretty messed up
if Bradley faked that injury. I used to like the guy, but now not so much. I guess I wouldn't want to play for KC either though...
Oh come on
Playing in KC would've been almost ..
... like playing in the Majors.
I suspect that he faked it, hoping for a better deal like this one, or that he would pass through to free agency. As an A's partisan, I don't like that he did it, as we presumably would have rather had that KC reliever.
But on my dark, MachIavellian side, I have to admit to some grudging admiration. It was a gutsy bargaining move that ended up making him likely better-off, and presumably us only slightly worse-off, we think.

And then I think: Fire Machiavelli NOW!
/just can't decide.

I hope we use the $2 million
to sign the signability guys we drafted in later rounds. An extra $2 million spent on the draft would be a nice addition to our minor league system. Of course, it would also be great if the $2 million is used for more golden pacifiers for Wolffish's grandbabies, because a baby can never have enough of those.
I agree
I want Gary Brown. We need a leadoff hitter...even if it does take him 4 years to develope.
by Threepwood XX on Jun 28, 2007 10:08 PM PDT up reply actions
He's the main guy
He should cost a million or so, leaving a million for others.

he's not signing
i talked to his sister yesterday and he is going to stay with Fullerton

Good luck Milton.
You had some big moments for us, and I'll never forget them. I'm rooting for you.
I am hoping that this works out well for
everyone. Hopefully the A's got some bullpen help and Milton goes on to crush the Dodgers. I bet Plaschke is going to have an aneurysm over this one.
by Tyler Bleszinski on Jun 28, 2007 9:48 PM PDT up reply actions
I hope Plaschke is in the stands
and Bradley kills him with a foul ball. The world would be a better place without Plaschke in it.
by BlameChannel53 on Jun 28, 2007 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions
Actually, Plaschke was
Simers is probably stoked
he's always dug Bradley.
Same here
I wish the guy nothing but luck, especially where his health is concerned.
I also must say I'm glad Beane got something for him and unloaded the salary. Once the DFA deed was done, this is about the best outcome we could hope for.
by peanut gallery on Jun 28, 2007 11:16 PM PDT up reply actions
Agreed on both counts
... but do we know for sure that San Diego is taking on the full salary?
Not that I've seen.
Just wishful thinking on my part.

Reunited...
with Bocachica and GM.com and it feels so good.
Clearly SD is more racially tolerant. Clearly

this is awesome news
i'm something of a padre fan. i didn't understand the barrett trade (he's defensively horrible) but milton is an awesome addition for SDP. I can already see him battling the mets in october.
Good luck Uncle Milty,
I hope you stay healthy and happy.
What's that sound?
24 to make a minyan?
is this a special San Diego rabbinical ruling

"Ready and able to
don the San Diego blue and throw chairs onto the ballfield."
this is crap...
Can we get Andre Eithier back?
Maybe if we ask nicely?
Eithier is hitting .279 with 30 rbi's
Which is a better average than 2 of the A's outfielders, I guess they would put him on the bench so that the guys with lower averages could start instead.
by 3Chavy3 on Jun 29, 2007 9:33 AM PDT up reply actions
Well,
he may be better than Kotsay, but he wouldn't play over him. And DJ has a 50 point OPS advantage in a tougher league. He'd play over Stewart.
Dj is a 1st baseman
by 3Chavy3 on Jun 29, 2007 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions
Benching him opens an OF spot,
but that just supports my point. Swisher, Buck, and Kotsay would be ahead of Ethier in line in the OF.
Beane only wants Ethier back ...
... if he has some debilitating injury.
Great. Other teams acquire stars.
well, at least we got rid of Saars
At least we sort of got something for him
by 3Chavy3 on Jun 29, 2007 9:30 AM PDT reply actions
I won't believe it . . .
Until there's a press relase from the A's and Bradley actually puts on the blue and . . . uh . . tan?
by EddieVegas_NRAF on Jun 29, 2007 10:05 AM PDT reply actions
This is
what I was expecting in the first place. It makes a lot more sense than the KC deal for everyone involved.
my guess re: KC ...
... was that they had fully intended to flip Bradley for something more than Nunez.
huh?
We fully intended for Bradley to fail the physical in KC, knowing we could get more from S.D.?

Kansas City
My take is that the Royals are a franchise that is starting to lose it's fans, have a bunch of young players and have some money to spend and are now more concerned about puttting a competitive team on the field then to continue to play for a future that may never come.
It is important to give the young players hope that the team can compete (if you want any shot to re sign them) and winning games may make them more attrative to freeagents. They are in the Tigers position a few years ago when the Tigers went out and admittedly over paid for free agents. The Royals have had a hard time getting free agents to sign. They had to over pay for Meche and take guys other teams did not want. I think they really wanted Bradley, to see if he would not want to stay long term and help the younger guys learn to win some games.
does anyone else
have an injury that magically heals itself when you go to Southern California? That'll come in handy next time we go to Anaheim.
Maybe the pitching prospect
is Matt Bush, the former #1 overall who couldn't hit or field. They say he throws 95+.
non-fielding, non-hitting shortstop??? I have
never seen one of those.
by theblackpearl on Jun 29, 2007 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions
sorry, i guess i'm still bitter
at having to endure that period of 220 hitting from the team
I'll honestly miss you in the G&G, Bradley.
When you were healthy, you were a baller.
Now who's going to do the leg kick dance with Swish?
I hope you have a good run in SD and burn the shit out of the Seal Fartastic Grandpas (they are soooo old!).
Best of luck, Rad Brad!
now, I'm a quasi-fan of the Giants ...
... but "Seal Fartastic Grandpas" is one of the funniest tings I've ever read.
