Open Game Thread: Game 78 - A's at Cleveland
Gooooooooood morning, Oakland!!! Yes, wipe the crusties from those eyes and get you some Starbucks (as opposed to your normal "adult" beverage) because we've got early morning baseball from Cleveland, Ohio.
The A's look to start a streak heading in the other direction today by sending Smokin' June Blanton to the mound. Blanton is sporting a 7-4 record and a 3.19 ERA. Blanton is 3-1 with a 1.14 ERA in June. He's opposed by Paul "Don't Call Me June" Byrd who is 6-3 with a 4.74 ERA. Byrd has actually been getting whacked around in June. He's got a 7.89 ERA in the month of the Summer Solstice. Although the last time out, he actually pitched pretty well against the Washington Nationals by only giving up three runs in 6 2/3 innings.
The A's send out this lineup to try and beat Mr. Byrd:
Stewart
Kotsay
Swisher
Cust
Chavez
Ellis
Johnson
Crosby
Kendall
OK, so I guess I can understand putting Kendall back out there since the game was rain delayed last night and Suzuki had a late night because of it. But can we make sure that Suzuki is behind the dish tomorrow night? Please? Kotsay is hitting second by the way and in case you're wondering why...well, Mark has 11 hits in 24 ABs against Byrd and an OPS of 1.327 against the former Angel. As a matter of fact, many of the A's sport an OPS of over .900 against Byrd.
The Indians try to cool off June Blanton with the following lineup:
Sizemore
Michaels
Martinez
Hafner
Peralta
Nixon
Shoppach
Barfield
Rouse
Old friend Mike Rouse makes an appearance as well as Kelly "Freaking" Shoppach. Course that means that Donnie Darko, I mean Ryan Garko, has to have a seat and Garko has three hits in three previous ABs against Blanton including a double and a home run.
LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!! Make that latte taste extra good this morning.

Yay!!!
Good morning everyone!!!! The sun is up, the sky is clear, it's a beautiful day to sit and be unproductive at work. :)
feels like
almost no one is browsing AN this morning. not even a DLD.
Seriously
Is it some crazy form of masochism that we KEEP playing Kendall? Come on! He's literally the worst offensive player in baseball with a regular job.
What a joke.
To be fair
he's been a lot better in June - including posting a higher slugging percentage than Swisher.
by green star oakland on Jun 28, 2007 8:57 AM PDT up reply actions
the difference is
one double in twelve less ABs.
still, I'd bat him higher than Kotsay versus lefties right now.
I think that Haren and Blanton
should get to use Kendall but the other 3 should have Suzuki as their catcher.
Blanton
pitches better with Kendall. A couple of games back when he didn't have Kendall he had a poor game. So I bet he wants Kendall and you dont't mess with a good pitcher's head.
one game?
So based on one game, we're deciding that Blanton can't pitch to Suzuki? (any thoughts on small size?)
Even if true, these guys better learn to throw to him, because they're going to be next year.
Blanton
Hated using Melhuse, too. Scares me to think what will happen next season.

Good Morning Everyone!
Almost forgot about this starting so early. Should make the rest of my day at work far more enjoyable. Let's see if Cust can get another HR today. Hope the players slept well.
GO A's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what's up with kotsay
swinging at first pitches? he seems to be doing it more lately.
Swing time
Better swing the bat today. Byrd doesn't walk to many. Good day to hit and run. Maybe that is why martinez is not behind the plate.
chavy up again

Chavez always comes through!
Never doubted him for a second... <looks around>
I'm not liking these flyball outs for
Cupcakes. Doesn't bode well for later on when he starts to get a little tired.
I blinked.
Did Blanton pitch the bottom of the first, or did Indians give him a pass?
Double your score!
I like this roll. Let's keep it up.
Yeah BABY!!!!
Groovy!
Woah, what's with all this power?!
And, like, people scoring runs and stuff. This isn't the A's at all.
double by Crosby means....
....it'll be even harder for Kendall to hit into a double play. That's I guess that's nice.
Bobby w/ an XBH????
Oh right, no runner so he couldn't GIDP....
:)
If I was being negative, I'd point out that
he's still trying to pull everything over the left field wall....
even Kendalls ground out moved a runner over

God, I'm getting giddy over this offense.
Hope they enjoy it enough to keep playing this way for a LONG time.

Bob Geren have another meeting today? - Fosse
I like the pattern here.
Next a three-run third...
Cmon cupcakes, lower that pitches per inning stat
12 is entirely unacceptable. Let's see 9 this time.
9-run Ninth?
9! = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 = 45 runs
and 10 in the 10th
after Embree's 45-run bottom of the 9th.

The Unicorns didn't like that call
bradley to washington?
Could bradley be going to washington with the trade for a minor league pitcher for a player to be named later? Could Bradley be the player to be named later if the A's don't have any other deal for him in place?
where did you hear this from?
or are you just speculating?
just guessing
The A's 10 days are almost up and no trade rumors in the air. KC trade is off since Bradley has a mysterious injury after being traded. Bradley wants to be a free agent instead of going to the KC. Only other trade I can see happening is bradley for jaque jones and the cubs picking up some of jones's money.
You're dreaming
I could see the Cubs wanting Bradley to take Jones' place, but I can't see why they'd trade Jones for Bradley.
They'll trade Jones to another team for a better deal, and then maybe they'll trade us something else for Bradley
hey

this season...
this is like 4th season of steady decline. They guy is an above-average fielder and below-average hitter being paid 3X more than he is worth. He should be no better than a 7th or 8th place hitter on a average team but with this roster of light-weights he's our beloved clean-up hitter. I swear, has anytime Beane has opened up the checkbook it has resulted in complete disaster: Dye signs extension, becomes injury-prone and useless; Rhodes - utter disaster as a closer; Redman - marginal disaster as a back-of-the-rotation SP; resulting in salary-dump trade for beloved Kendall (2 HR's in three years as an A but full of grit - what do you get when you replace "gr" with "sh" in grit? what Kendall is worth to the offense); Loaiza - a few good months but several months of injury; Piazza - injury-prone; and of course, our beloved Chavy - at least he has been assembling some gold gloves.

That with Kendall, Crosby, and Kotsay back in the lineup the A's are back to scoring only 3 runs?
Not really
But I pretty much just blame it all on Kendall.
Double plays
I really think the A's can survive one double play rally killer like Chavez, but having Crosby and Kendall in the line-up is just too much. The fact that the A's league the league in double plays is kills too many rallys.

Fundamental failures doom this team (again)
Same old story, different day.
Here's to hoping for the annual summer lightning-in-a-bottle charge ...
won't happen, have you seen
our bullpen? Our starters literally have to go 9 innings - 8 if Casilla is ready to go - in order for us to win.
by SwisherSweet33 on Jun 28, 2007 11:41 AM PDT up reply actions
man, we actually played
very well 3 days in a row now. just about 2 or 3 pitches away from taking 3-4. oh well, baseball is like that. on to new york where hopefully we can win the series vs the yanks.
Thats not playing well...
I just hope they win this series against the slumping Yankees, or else I am going to get a lot of shit for being an A's fan at Yankee Stadium this weekend...
if you bunt
then we never even get the runner to 3rd. we had a breat chance, couldn't cash it in. compared to the shea series, the a's played good ball vs clev, but, baseball being the random sport it is, 2 pitches were the difference between winning or losing 3 of 4.
Who cares about getting the runner to 3rd....
looked what happened, instead of bunting, there is pop up to 2nd, now DJ is stuck at 1B instead of being in scoring position with 1 out...at least a base hit would give them a good chance of scoring on a single...who cares about going 1st to 3rd, that doesn't score a run
seriously..
we had the situation you want...runner at 3rd, less than 2 outs. The decision not to bunt actually worked in our favor. If there's managerial decision that you could possibly question (and its questionable whether you even question this) is whether to pull Joe Blanton or not...The game was managed just fine. We just lost because our team is not that good right now.
by wordfromthewise on Jun 28, 2007 11:52 AM PDT up reply actions
Why do a lot of people think bunting is always
yeah, i don't get that either
not bunting was the right call there. it worked out, but we failed to get the runner home. i'm sure stew tossed a gatorade bucket or something, but, they've probably all put it behind them now. its just baseball - we all need to do the same.
You must get the runner in scoring position
It's fundamental ball...thats why the A's dont do well in the playoffs, because they don't play small ball...This so-called "Moneyball" is good to a point, butBeanes philosophy on not wasting outs isn't always correct...this was a situation where a bunt needed to happen...and i'm sorry, but if he can't get a good enough bunt down to get DJ over to 2B, then Crosby shouldn't be in the bigs
the bullpen stinks
the offense hurts too but really the bullpen has cost us a bunch of games on this trip
by oak1 on Jun 28, 2007 11:42 AM PDT reply actions
Epitome
This game had everything this season has been about...
- Very Good Starting Pitching
- Good Defense
- Croz & Chavvy sucking ass
- Horrid Bullpen due to injuries
- Failure to bring guys in from 3rd w/ Less than 2 outs
Very, very tough loss. Very tough.
Yes, it was tough
But with Duke, Calero and Street out, we have no bullpen. They will be back post all star break and then we don't lose this game. It's as simple as that. HANG IN THERE, AN!
by A'sfansince1970 on Jun 28, 2007 11:45 AM PDT reply actions
we can fall out of the division race
by the ASB at this pace if we arent careful. Street, Duke and Harden wont help us win the division then.
by oak1 on Jun 28, 2007 11:52 AM PDT up reply actions
I actually still feel hopeful.
We hit. and that was an improvement. If Beane coud find us some relievers we'd be in business.
So Why Didn't Crosby Bunt DJ to Second?
Crosby didn't exactly do what is farily typical for him...(K on the outside pitch or hit into a DP) but getting the runner to second makes all the difference....plus
- Not much you can do with a AA bullpen. We just don't have the arms right now. We will all continue to cringe when Lewis, Marshall, Flores and the other guys destined for Sacramento/Midland come into the game.
- Can someone on this team clutch up? Getting home a runner from third with less than 2 out seems impossibile for this team. Perhaps Geren should consider a suicide or something...but wait...that means we actually do something different other than wait for Ellis to hit a three run jack..not going to happen.
- Chavez in the clutch...I think that is an oximoron. I do appreciate his glove though.
On to New York..let's hope we are not the answer to the Yankees woes.
Could have won 4 of 7 on this road trip
But instead, the A's won ONE of seven. Not good AT ALL. Especially considering the Angels' mini-swoon right now, the A's just blew a major opportunity to climb back into the AL West race.
I, for one, cannot sit and pretend the A's didn't just damage their postseason hopes considerably in the last seven games.
We know that they damage their post season hopes.
But there is a lot of season left and who knows? Things may turn around for us and the Halos may have a bad streak themselves. So it's too early to throw in the towel.
