Open Game Thread: Game 76 - A's at Cleveland (cont.)
Dan Haren exits and Casilla enters in the bottom of the 7th with the bases full, as the team tries to hang on to a 4-3 margin over the Cleveland Indians. Meanwhile, Mark Ellis appears to have taken good notes from today's meeting, and is leading the team with 2 extra base hits, including a 2-run bomb, and 3 RBIs. Oh yeah, and Jack Cust has another home run. Hit two in a game, and then maybe we'll be interested, Jack.
Casilla, let's get these guys out! Mojo time!

And I'm here!
Woo hoo! Let's get some more runs now.
Reason #214 why I love Kotsay
The moment that ball was hit I thought, "Caught".
The A's are 0-4 on my vacation so far
I blame you.

Outside... I am also crying.

Crosby's taking hitting lessons from Chavez.
I never cease to be amazed
at how much Bobby Crosby stinks as a hitter. Take strikes, swing at balls; good approach.
Better than
... swinging at dirt
... swinging at other players
... swinging at flung poo
But that's pretty much it.
He does swing at dirt.
It's just obscured by the pitches that are in them.
He had a streak going the other way
and his average climbed to like, .250. Then he hit a home run or something, and fizzzzzzzzzz...back to the ol' "pin~ata" act (swinging with eyes closed).
I can't watch him bat anymore. Simply too painful to observe.

Gotta give credit to Indians hitters
Those are some nasty pitches they've had to face. But they still manage to have good at bats and get some hits even when down in the count.
A's hitters should take note.
But to do that,
don't you have to make adjustments?
A's hitters don't know what that word means.

one of those "boo's" from jennifer

- Other team got a hit, etc.
- She is responding to something to, maybe another game or show, and we have no idea.
Maybe she's booing you.

Guh
Team sucks. I'd ask that Billy do something, but he'd probably just deal for another injured outfielder or something and then complain later down the road about our bad luck with injuries.
Or give Larry Davis a raise
Pathetic
maybe we can still get a box of ACE bandages
and an ice machine for Embree.
or a new trainer? maybe the NL all star team's trainer?
Jeez people
The season is not over. It's bleak right now but we're just on a bad streak. When our guys get healthy we'll play better and we'll be in the mix again. Our bullpen has stunk this year b/c of injuries; hopefully Street and the Duke come back healthy.
I'd like to believe you (and I do), BUT
when are these guys ever going to be healthy. Our crack pot medical staff has not shown any reason to believe that all these guys with shoulder impingements are going to get healthy, ever.
by SwisherSweet33 on Jun 26, 2007 7:32 PM PDT up reply actions
healthy?? what's that.
we need some trades.
Who are we going to trade?
We have no bargaining chips except for the one thing that's keeping us afloat; starting pitching. Do you want to give up Blanton right now with the way DiNardo and Kennedy have started to pitch?
I'm not sure Street would have done any better
than Embree if you look at the overall stats as a closer. Everyone is on Embree tonight because we lost AGAIN but the guy has done a pretty good job this year. Bad timing to have a letdown.
I'm still with ya and the season is most definitely not over.

Fine. I still have faith in this team.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Jun 26, 2007 7:38 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm no pessimist, but I just don't think
the A's have enough healthy talent to compete. The amazing resilience has given way to reality. And reality bites.
Well, we have been playing well up until
the last two weeks. There is some talent there; when we get Piazza in the lineup the hits will come. When Street, Kiko, and Duke get back, the bullpen will be a little more solid. We'll see the true colors of this team by mid July when everyone is healthy.
I never thought I would get excited about Kielty
but now I'm really wanting him in there against lefties.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Jun 26, 2007 7:39 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't foresee Street back this year,
not with the nature of that injury and the fact that he already had a setback, and I don't see Harden pitching any meaningful number of innings. I think Piazza won't help that much because he has to replace Cust or else we have to put a terrible defensive player out there somewhere. It just doesn't look good to me, honestly.
But the thing is, we've already got talent here
We've still got 3 of the best starting pitchers in the American League in Gaudin, Haren, and Blanton (now that Blanton has decided to pitch like his rookie season). We've got bullpen depth and have found good arms in Embree and Casilla that will just make us better when our other guys get back. Piazza will help the offense and he certainly can't be any worse than Kendall at throwing out runners. I see him replacing Johnson instead of Cust, with Cust either playing the outfield or the A's trying Cust at 1st. His bat is so good that Geren can't afford to sit him with our other anemic bats like Crosby and Chavez pulling down the lineup right now. Ellis is starting to get hot again, Kotsay looks better every day, Buck is good, and Swisher is Swisher, so we've got the pieces there to make a good run on offense and pitching wise.
Street's ulnar nerve irritation is a painful one but it's one that either lasts forever or just goes away on a whim. He could be back in a few weeks or you're right, he could miss the season. No way of really knowing, but he only has to pitch 1 or 2 innings, so that should speed his rehab up. Harden has to pitch through pain at some point, because it's been established that he is going to feel something in his shoulder. At this point, I'm wondering if it's just something that will go away over time.
Regardless, even without Harden, we've proven we can win this year. And there are a number of talented hitters on this team, we just need to get all of them in the lineup at the same time. This year's team has the potential to be a much, much better offensive team than we thought possible beginning the year with Frank's departure.
I agree
the season is not over yet. There are still a TON of games to play and we can just as easily go on a 5 game winning streak (well maybe not JUST as easily, but you know what I mean).
I'm just terribly upset right now that we not only blew 5 games in a row, but we actually had a chance to win this one, ahead 2 runs with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. GAH. So frustrating.
I really hope people get healthy and are able to be amazing. And I hope that Chavez is not in the 4 spot tomorrow. Not that we have many alternative options really, but I want to punch him right now :(
Ahh, whatever.
They just took it back from us for that game in Oakland. 2 run HR to tie, 3 run HR to win in both games.
So cool it everyone. Don't be scared, we're all going to make it.
I wouldn't have minded so much
if we could have won yesterday. Or any game against the Mets. It just stings so much more because it's yet ANOTHER loss, and one we could have actually won!
Hopefully we'll get some offense tomorrow and take a game.
You mean you don't think Chavez
would have ripped that game tying double?
Didn't we have the DL Cavalry conversation
a few weeks ago?
Loaiza will be ready to pitch in 2008, Harden still feels pain in his shoulder, Milton Bradley will NOT be coming back, I haven't heard thing one about Street and Duke must still be somewhere in Tennesee because I haven't seen him anywhere either!
We were lucky to be playing so well for so long with a second team.
What happens now?
by oaklandSMASH on Jun 26, 2007 7:34 PM PDT up reply actions
The team will look a lot better by mid July
We will start to see our players back in uniform. Harden said he felt achy, who knows what that means. He throws hard and he's just getting his arm into shape after not throwing for a while. Street's return will make late innings a little more comfortable (Embree's been pitching over his head). Piazza will give us a lift, as will having Kielty platooning against lefties. We have discovered some great talent in Cust and Buck that will help us get hot eventually (not to mention Casilla's arm in the bullpen and Gaudin). And the nucleus of good pitching is still there, especially when Loaiza gets back to bolster the rotation and get DiNardo back in the bullpen, where we could really use some help.
see you tomorrow guys
I hope Billy get as mad as I am, so he can get rid of some 5 or 6 guys.
I can't even believe this...
but it is still June. We will be in the Wild Card picture until the end!
sounds like it's time for

I choose to give Stewart a better arm to throw out Sizemore.
that sucked
Walked out of the room after the sizemore slide back to 1st thinking the game was over. Walked back in to see the HR. That really sucked.
I don't think the season's over (we're still >.500), but it's not looking great right now.
