Kevin Youkilis who?
The A's draft Adam Klein with the 1,409th overall pick this year out of Cal State Los Angeles. That's the 48th round.
So far the outfielder has gone 2-2 with 7 walks, 1 HBP, 4 R and 3 SB in the first two games in Rookie-level Arizona. Yes, he has reached base 10 consecutive times (and counting) to start his professional career.
Ok so he is 23 years-old and is one of the oldest guys in the league, but the run is impressive so far.
Will he make the major leagues...mmm probably not. A 23 year-old drafted in the 48th round would be lucky to make it to double-A, but it is fun to track.

Klein gets on base
Dude had 69 walks in 217 AB's this season at Cal State L.A. I think a few of the guys the A's grabbed late in the draft are pretty intriguing. Ben Barrone set all kinds of DII records this year hitting 27 HR in 44 games. Maybe he'll pull an Anthony Recker and sneak up on some people.
And how about J.P. Pruitt so far? Doing whatever it takes to get on base, I think he's been hit 4 times already in short season with a bunch of walks and a dinger to top it off.

Klein's a keeper
I met and watched Adam in a crucial series at Sonoma State University, and got to chat with his parents at length near the end of his regular 2007 college season. Adam shows outstanding discipline at the plate, has great speed, and always seems to get things going offensively. He also helped get Cal State LA deep into the Division II World Series after a tough conference playoff series. Aside from his exceptional college stats, I think Adam has many intangible qualities that will refute doubtful projections of probable success. Considering Adam's exceptional baseball skills and mental attitude, he has a great chance of beating the odds set by the typical prototype standards, e.g., age, size, etc. GO ADAM!!!
