A precursor to a Kendall trade?
The Cubs just traded away Michael Barrett to San Diego for the Padres backup catcher.....
Could this be a precursor to another deal with the A's? Piniella is known for liking a defensive catcher. The A's happen to have an interesting situation at catcher with a possibly available great game caller in Jason Kendall. Could Kendall be bleeding Cubbie Blue soon?

Well . . .
It makes no sense for the Cubs to acquire Kendall and would be a waste of money, so given Hendry's track record I would have to say it's entirely possible.
Agreed.
They're just that dumb.
Maybe we can get Mark Prior for him...
I figure between Prior and Harden, you can get 33 starts next year, as long as Harden waits for Prior to come off the DL to get hurt. One for the price of two, but one good one!

Hmmmm
I think the Cubs just wanted to get rid of Barrett. A backup catcher was probably the best they could get for him.....
catcher
koyie hill and Rob bowen are terrible catchers though. Do the cubs have a good young catcher in the minors?

they have a couple of catchers
mark reed, geovany soto, chris robinson and jake fox. reed is the younger brother of jeremy reed and has had a similar career path thus far (he cant hit), soto did ok in AAA last year, and robinson and fox are in AA. of those fox has the most upside.

Well...
If we were to trade Kendall to the Cubbies who could we get in return?

Addition by subtraction
Salary relief, roster spot, maybe a low level prospect, a bucket of balls. Does it really matter?

thats sounds like...
Erstad.
Just for the sake of arguement
The big hang-up in any plan to deal Kendall is his no-trade clause. However, he's having a lousy year with the bat and if he wants to get a decent contract next year he needs to get his bat going. He's had some success vs. NL teams this year, maybe the idea of making a few extra million dollars next year by posting a respectable batting line would be enough to get him to waive his NTC.
NL Central
Cubs saw what he's done against the Astros and Cardinals (batting like .500 with doubles and a fricking HR). Plus, Pinella is looking for a tag team partner to take on Lackey and Dibble.
if they're that dumb
then God bless'em!

Barrett's had some attitude issues.
But he's a pretty good hitter for a catcher. If the Cubs were willing to give him up for only a backup catcher, why didn't BB make an offer?
we already traded him to make room for Kendall
before. Now, that was back yonder when Beane thought Kendall could hit.
no
that was for damien miller in 04. Kendall was in 05.

so we traded Barrett before we got Kendall
Beane was just thinking a year ahead in clearing space for Kendall...
Back then
Barrett was a below average catcher who couldn't hit. If Beane had known he'd eventually become a great hitter, he'd have held onto him.

yeah
we got him from the Expos for a PTBNL then gave the cubbies cash and Barrett
re: barrett/miller
I thought, at the time, that we kind of wanted Barrett for ourselves but couldn't agree on a contract since he was arby eligible. We then spun him off in a trade to a team that wanted him no matter what (Cubs).

zambrano
i think the barrett trade has more to do with keeping their star pitcher, you know the one that is not on the dl, happy by getting rid of the cancer, er, i mean catcher.
although it would be nice to free up the salary, maybe even for another deal...
