Future "Ace"letics Round-up
Future Aceletics Roundup for Sat. June 16 2007.
After today’s loss I thought it would be fun to take a look at the future of the A’s. Fan-Scouting reports on any mentioned player and differentiating opinions are encouraged.
Pitching Aceletics:
Dan Meyer: 5.0 innings, 6 hits, 6 ER, 1HR, 3BB, and 4 K's
The last piece of the Tim Hudson trade in the A's system had a bad outing and was roughed up by Las Vegas. The fact that his K's dropped and it only took 6 hits to score 6 runs is troubling, but that’s what allowing 2 doubles and a grand slam will do to ya. If there is anything good to take out of this outing it's that even with the bad outing Meyer lasted 5 innings--good for someone who's biggest knock was the length of his starts.
Michael Madsen: 6.0 innings, 3H, 2ER, 0HR, 3BB, 5K's
The Midland Ace rebounded from his subpar start last time, by throwing 6 innings and giving up 3 hits in 7 inning rainout. His two runs were due to a walk, triple, and ground-out, but for most of the game he was in control.
Trevor Cahill: 7.0 innings, 6H, 0ER, 0HR, 1BB, 4K's
The A's top 2006 pick had a VERY good outing in Kane County...what else can you say about 0 earned runs? While the 6 hits might be worrisome, hits are not a stat a pitcher has a lot of control over. Really the only knock would be I would have liked to see a couple more K's, but since he has 33 strikeouts in only 29.2 innings on the year, I’ll let it slide.
Hitting Aceletics:
Daric Barton: .290avg/.395obp/.437slg/.832ops
The A's top hitting prospect went 3 for 4 raising his avg. to .290. He now has a .395obp and .437slg on the year--even more impressive given his slow start in April. If Barton keeps the hitting up Dan Johnson’s days at first are numbered.
Jeff Baisley: .287avg/.351obp/.476slg/.827ops
The power hitting AA Third-baseman went 2 for 3 with a walk. His .351obp and .476slg may be sexy at AA, but Baisley is the definition of a blocked prospect (especially if Cust continues to hit off-speed pitches); he’ll need to learn another position soon or be traded.
Other Notables:
Brad Ziegler: The fan favorite gave up 5 hits, 2 earned runs, and a walk in 2.2 innings today. Ziegler has a 6.0ERA in 18 innings of relief in AAA, but he does have some darn shiny peripherals like 18K's in those 18 innings and a 2.30 GO/AO. Can anyone out there tell me if his large amounts of hits are attributed to luck?
Patrick Currin: Stockton’s closer gave up a hit and walk, but stuck out one and allowed no runs in 1 inning of relief. He has 30k’s and a 1.71era in 26.1 innings in High A.

If Chavez's injury is serious
I wonder if the A's would call up Basily or Melillo and try them at 3B?
Melillo might just move there anyways, and he'd be a nice fill in if Chavez really is out for a month or more.

Scutaro
I think super-sub Scutaro will get first crack at third, but I wonder if (considering he doesn't seem to be hitting well enough to be a regular) the A's might teach Mellilo SS and 3B in an attempt to turn him into the next Scutaro.
As for Baisley, if the fact that the A's haven't changed his position yet (given Chavez is at third until 2010/11) should we consider it a sign they see him more as trade-bait then a future player for the team?

Or...
... maybe the A's want to have options if Chavy is traded at some point during his current deal? (Hmmm)

Barton
I herd BArton has been making lots of errors at third...so I don't know how well it's going.

Assesments
Windsor's been hurt, I think his shoulder was bothering him long before he went on the DL.
Calling Sellers a bust is harsh, his numbers have improved every month. His defense has been shaky but its way too soon for the bust label.
Regarding your Melillo comments above... the A's had Melillo play some 3B last year in the AFL. The preseason plan was for him to get some time at 3B in Sac but the Barton experiment seems to have taken precident.

Stuff
I hate to be this guy, but it is Dan Meyer, not Myers.
And Madsen's start wasn't part of a DH, the game was called early due to rain. Like a ton of it. It was a long night. Just sayin...
He isn't exactly a prospect or anything, but I just wanted to mention that after taking a pitch to the head on Friday, Luke Appert is doing well. He sustained a concussion (duh), a cut on his head and was taken to the hospital, but will be fine.

Appert
Geeze, didn't the same thing happen to Italiano?
by Threepwood XX on Jun 17, 2007 2:22 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah, but Appert is a batter, Italiano a pitcher
so Italiano's was probably moving faster.
