3's a crowd: Kendall, Suzuki, Piazza
Oakland recently reported that Piazza will be catching after all.
" The Oakland Athletics have decided to bring Piazza back from his stint on the disabled list as a catcher and a designated hitter, postponing the scheduled start of his rehab assignment [...] to give him more time to get his arm in shape. [...] Geren said he expects it will take Piazza an additional two to three weeks to be ready to catch in a game."
So, now what's the plan? We have three catchers... and I know we have all been talking about this quite a bit, especially about our frustrations with Kendall's performance at the plate and on the field this season.

What do you guys think?
Go A's,

I think all 3 catchers will stay,
Don't know what the A's are thinking...
but is it possible that Suzuki stays for the additional three weeks the A's mentioned...getting a few starts here and there, then when Piazza comes back he is sent down to Sacramento to await another call up in September?
Most likely scenario
With Cust rebounding, they probably don't want to release him when Piazza comes back, so I don't think they'll be able to keep Cust and three catchers.
With Chavez hurting, it will be interesting to see what happens when Bradley comes back. Seems risky to go with just one IF reserve. Are they willing to cut back to 5 relievers?
Kendall to DH?
Give it a shot... Lets see what 'ol Custy can do at Catcher. (Probably throw out more runners than Piazza)
It's entirely possible that the three weeks ...
is to give Zooks some more time to show whether or not he's ready and Kendall to show whether or not he's really bouncing back ... in 3 weeks we can make a more educated decision ...
Why would we want to break precident and do that?
Make an educated decision, I mean.
I agree
I think this is all just a stalling maneuver.
They may also be trying to precipitate a Piazza trade me/release me demand.
I don't think so...
Piazza seems to be dealing with all this with a smile on his face. He knows he's getting paid either way.

Stalling
until the next injury crops up.
And you know it's going to happen. We will wait and see if Bradley's recover takes or not.
Wait and see if some other nagging injury needs TLC. Buck's wrists, Crosby's back, Stewart's Plantar Warts.
Stalling is worth it, and telling Piazza to work on the arm is a way to do it and save face for all.
Just speculation
Exactly right
this is first and foremost a stall tactic to avoid having to cut Stewart or Cust (or both) and because Piazza doesn't figure to add much to the team anyway.
Another way to look at it--
Johnson should be gone because even when he isn't hitting, Cust maintains a higher OBP than DJ. Cust also has more power than DJ. Conclusion: offensively, hot or cold, Cust > DJ.
So keep Piazza and Cust, and dump DJ--this improves your offense and improves your defense by moving Swisher to 1B. Then if an OFer goes down, replace him with an OFer (Kielty, Snelling, someone we call up or acquire) instead of moving Swisher back to the OF.
If by move you mean trade
are there really any teams out there who would think they could upgrade at first by adding DJ?

bad trade...
I think if we're going to trade Johnson, we should go for the gold and try to get Schlong.
by The Pilots Dared Me To Die on Jun 18, 2007 4:19 PM PDT up reply actions
Obviously
We wouldn't be looking to take a team to the bank for DJ. But teams are always looking to add some depth and DJ could do that on several teams. And getting something for DJ is better than nothing.
by methodrampage on Jun 18, 2007 8:04 AM PDT up reply actions
Yeah
with everyone healthy, DJ shouldn't be in the lineup offensively or defensively. Like you, I prefer Swisher at 1B where he is excellent to the OF where he's average. But he figures to spend most of his contract in the outfield, with Barton at 1B.
It also makes some sense to send down DJ because he has options left (I think), whereas we can't send Stewart, Piazza, or Cust down without losing them. (Of course I would like to see Stewart go as his upside is '06 Kendall production playing a mediocre LF). I could definitely see the wisdom of sending down DJ and keeping Stewart just to preserve injury flexibility.
DJ's playing time figures to drop significantly anyway (for however long Bradley is healthy.) He was DHing with Swisher at first last time Bradley was around, so it seems the standard lineup will be Bradley, Kotsay, Buck in the OF, Swisher at 1B, and Cust DHing. The problem with Piazza returning is you wouldn't intentionally build a team that had both he and Cust, who really can't play at the same time. I'd take Cust over Piazza this year, and Cust is a potential future contributor, whereas Piazza is not.
Nico is a genius
Now could we throw in Harden with DJ (or even pull a fast one and throw in Kennedy) and pry Hughes away from the Yankees?

Barton
It's looking like Daric Barton might be ready for MLB pitching. After a mediocre start to the season, he's inching ever so close to 300/400/500.
I'm in w/ the "Trade DJ" peeps. I'm still not down w/ packaging Harden, only because he's not healthy enough to get max. value in return.

Melhuse has a .306 batting average now
He got 3 hits and made two runs. And Millwood actually won a game today! So I guess Adam really does suck.
As far as the catcher 22 (he he), I think Suzuki will be sent back down, Piazza will have maybe 3 starts as catcher (and that is a guess on the high end) and Kendall will continue to play every single day. Good for him!
by mlleaimee on Jun 17, 2007 10:25 PM PDT reply actions
Thats all Wash right there...
Berate the Tex backup catcher, then find a better replacement in Melhuse. I mean, he scouted him long enough. Keep rollin' RoWash! Next to get replaced... Texeira with Dan Johnson.
Worth noting
Although Suzuki moved up the ranks to the big league club neither Landon Powell (Midland's starting catcher) nor Anthony Recker (Stockton's backstop) have been moved up despite performances than one might think should earn them a promotion. Sounds to me like the A's want to keep the option open of sending Suzuki back to Sacramento.
Best observation so far.
And let's not forget, we've got a few new catchers out of the draft who just signed their contracts, so if those guys were going up, you'd think they would have by now.
Personally, I think the A's have asked Piazza to take the rehab slow so they can showcase Cust in prep for a later trade.
And Piazza, who's a team player by all accounts, has done so.
They would much rather trade
Piazza than Cust.
Billy's still in Oakland mode.
Thanks Oz
BTW, I just noticed Powell and Recker made an appearance on Baseball America's latest hot prospect list.
- Landon Powell, c, Double-A Midland (Athletics)
The switch-hitting Powell has hit .431/.513/.759 this month with five home runs. But the most shocking stat is his pair of triples.
HELIUM WATCH
Anthony Recker, c, high Class A Stockton (Athletics)
A 2005 18th-round pick from Division-III Alveria (Penn.) College, Recker was a raw project when he signed. Two years later, the 23-year-old catcher has made massive strides. He's hitting .319/.402/.609 for the season and has been even better this month (.344/.432/.797).
Finding ways to keep Cust around
I would think that Billy would want to keep Cust around (i.e. not have to release him) this year so he would have him next year. Piazza's on a one-year contract and Cust would be a super cheap DH for next year.
someone refresh my memory
Can anyone else think of a time during the Beane era when the team has purposely (and medically unnecessarily) delayed the oin-field return of an expensive contract?
Is Billy (or ownership?) finally able to act on sunk costs?
Grover or Nico....
What's Cust's contract status? Is he a free agent after this year? Arbitration?
This is not completely idle speculation. If the A's control Cust for the next couple of years, and if Cust's latest binge means he can hit breaking pitches and might be the next David Ortiz, then Barton should be traded at some point. If Cust is gone at the end of the year, then despite a productive period and a chance to create a career for himself, he's very short-term and the A's still nned to think in terms of Johnson and/or Barton long term.
My guess is that Suzuki goes down as soon as Piazza comes back, and that Lugo is gone the moment Bradley returns. When Harden comes back, then either Flores or Lewis is sent down. There's also Furmaniak or Murphy in the mix, but Scutaro needs a back-up.
by richwol on Jun 18, 2007 10:27 AM PDT up reply actions
A's control Cust
for 4-5 more years after this. If he sticks around he'll be the DH, and Barton figures to play 1B, so they're not really in conflict.
Thanks for the Answer
Barton is not much of a fielder, and without Ron W. to guide him, probably never would be. He's a natural DH, as is Cust. So I think the A's wouldn't keep both of them, particularly since Swish is such a good fielding first baseman.
by richwol on Jun 18, 2007 11:11 AM PDT up reply actions
I don't think ...
that the A's would be experimenting with Barton at third if they didn't think he had the ability to play a tollerable first.
The two aren't in conflict -- and even if they were, Billy Beane will never be concerned with having too much talent.
Well, the A's have sacrificed on defense before,
and the 2 best positions to sacrifice are left field and first base.
Are Barton and Cust our new Giambis?

Doesn't insurance cover payroll...
for an injured player.
Thus the longer the high-paid Piazza is on the DL, the better financially for the team. Especially when compared to him on the bench.
Much better for insurance to pay for a DL than the A's to pay for a bench warmer.
Can you imagine what the A's
Vague memory. . .
is that DL insurance does not cover one year contracts.
Selling Piazza
I would speculate that the A's maybe trying to get Piazza healthy so that they can shop him at the trade deadline to both American and National League teams, keeping Suzuki as intern, Kendall as mentor and Cust as DH. If Duke and Street can not mend quickly, the A's may seek some short term bullpen help for Piazza who is expendable and highly paid.
Hmm...
I wonder if Suzuki can really hit. He sure looks like he can. I know it's early, but hmm... I've been salivating ever since that long dinger against the Giants on the last day of Spring Training...
by The Pilots Dared Me To Die on Jun 20, 2007 9:57 PM PDT up reply actions
I think Piazza is staying on the DL
to keep options open. Any of the scenarios mentioned above could happen, or maybe not. If you bring him up now, though, Suzuki has to stay on the active roster which means something has to be done with Cust, Stewart or someone else. I don't think Beane knows what the next move will be - but he has a whole bunch of contingency plans and this is the (non-) move that keeps the most options open. I would not discount the possibility of moving Johnson, Piazza, Calero, Cust, Kennedy, Stewart, Crosby, Gaudin, Harden, Barton - it just depends what other teams want and are willing to give. This way Beane can play his hand from the most angles. The only players that would be very difficult to pry away are Buck, Haren and Blanton (with Gaudin, Street and Elis not far behind in terms of being off-limits).
hmm...
I can see someone wanting to pick up Piazza, and I can see Piazza not minding very much, because he knows his skills are on the decline, and he's getting paid $8M this year.

Suzuki Showcase
I just read this entire thread and I can't believe no one suspects that Suzuki's callup is a showcase move so Billy can trade him. It is typical Billy. Create a market for a player, say he is the future (especially at the one position the minors are stacked with AND a position we have millions invested in through the rest of the year - Kendall and Piazza) and hang him out there as bait for a big deal. Is anyone in our minor league system a better trade chip than Suzuki? Wouldn't surprise me one bit if Beane moves Suzuki and Barton to a seller for a big piece of the recently fragmenting puzzle. Your thoughts?
Trading Suzuki is possible...
if you're willing to go All In on Landon Powell.
Barton's move to 3B in Sac screams Showcase.
Landon Powell
is pocket Jacks.
I wouldn't do it preflop in a tourney unless I had first-in vig and had a chance to take the blinds and antes right there...
This is baseball though, and Landon Powell is not a sure thing.

My gut reaction too...
However, it seems like he has a lot invested in the club, and we as fans have a lot invested in him. It would be one thing if it was a guy we heard about being good, having quality skills, but never actually saw, but all indications I've seen (interviews/other exposure) make it seem like he's an Athletic.
Crawford
Could we get Carl Crawford for Suzuki, Barton and DJ?

See my diary on "The Catcher Argument"
But basically, Kendall is a net plus to the team by his calling a good game.
From the story last night:
"Blanton threw 106 pitches with 76 strikes in an efficient eight-inning outing. The right-hander, who started in Oakland's two shortest games this year, had a six-pitch, six-strike first inning and kept up the quick pace -- getting through five on 53 pitches with 40 strikes.
It helps that he hasn't had to shake off a pitch call by catcher Jason Kendall, well, in as long as Blanton can remember.
'I don't know -- maybe last year,' he said."
If Kendall is responsible for giving up 4 fewer runs per start but also for scoring 3 fewer runs per night, it's a net gain.
Where was MKE on Sunday
Ok, Saturday we had Suzuki, and gave up 15. Kendall on Sunday, and it's back to only 10? So perhaps Kendall saved us 5 runs. Then the next day, Kendall saved 9 more runs over that lousy catcher Kendall.
