Draft Talk
Just thought I'd put out a diary for those of us who follow the minor league portion of our beloved A's to consolidate info on the newest additions.
So far 13 of the 50 or so draft picks have signed. The most notable being our 6th round pick Scott Hodsdon, a right handed pitcher from Azusa Pacific, the same school as Jimmy Shull and (I think) Jason Ray.
With short season ball in Vancouver starting up on Tuesday, we should start to see some of these guys playing fairly quickly. Hodsdon is apparently allready on his way.
For those interested in all the signed picks, the others are righty Brent Lysander (16th round, Sonoma State), shortstop Matt Ray (18th, Middle Tennessee State), catcher Michael Napoleon (19th, Iowa), outfielder Dan Wentzell (20th, George Fox), outfielder James Pruitt (23rd, Montevallo), third baseman Justin Frash (27th, Hawaii), righty Charles Kerfoot (30th, Delaware), lefty Rosalio Gomez (31st, Rockford College), righty Bryan Collins (32nd, Central Missouri State), righty John Quine (33rd, San Francisco), catcher Ben Barrone (44th, Winona State) and outfielder Adam Klein (48th, Cal State Los Angeles).

Dude.
It's Hodsdon, not Hodson.
I think a lot of people are going to make that mistake.
Any draft grades so far?
Not that they matter or anything . . . but then again most people were right about Jeremy Brown, except for our beloved Billy.
Or do "graders" wait to see what players are signed before giving grades?
Haven't seen any yet
I haven't seen any grades per se, but from most of the early chatter the A's appear to have had an average draft. No one has really brought them up in the "top drafts" conversations but they haven't appeared as the one of the worsts either.
we got
a silver medal from project prospect.

Silver:
Oakland Athletics:
Move over, class of 2002, there’s a new Moneyball draft in town. James Simmons (Round 1, no. 26 overall) has excellent command and was one of the most polished pitchers in the draft. In a weak collegiate hitters’ draft, Oakland walked away with four of the best this year’s class had to offer. While he was a bit of a reach, Sean Doolittle (Round 1S, no. 41 overall) was a safe pick who carries projectable hitting skills at first base. Corey Brown (Round 1S, no. 59 overall) more than made up for any reach, as the Oklahoma State outfielder could have gone 20-30 picks earlier. Grant Desme (Round 2, no. 74 overall) is a true five-tool talent that fell due to a broken wrist and Josh Horton (Round 2, no. 90 overall) is a shortstop with excellent bat control. Sam Demel (Round 3, no. 120 overall) was a great value pick that will arrive in the A’s bullpen shortly. No team brought in a deeper pool of prospects than the A’s this year.
12th rounder
Any word on whether higher school center fielder Gary Brown will sign? The guy was supposed to be the fastest player in the draft.
Gary Brown
I haven't heard too much either way about his signability, but I did read that he has committed to Cal State Fullerton. That combined with the fact that he fell to the 12th round makes me think he will be a tough sign.
I haven't heard anything about him having big bonus demands either so hopefully he an be lured away from college.
Gary Brown
I've coached his sister in volleyball, so as soon as I saw his name I tried to find out. At first she thought that he would sign. But last I heard he is leaning towards college.
College World Series
The CWS gets back underway today and the two of the A's top picks will be playing for North Carolina at 4 pm pacific time. 2nd round SS Josh Horton should be on display and there is a good chance that closer and A's 5th round pick Andrew Carignan will make an appearance.
I'm sure the game will be on one of the ESPN channels for anyone interested in seeing some future A's minor leaguers.
Not too bad
Horton finished 2-4 and didn't make an error which he was having trouble with in the super regionals. Carignan pitched the ninth with a four run lead and got all three batters he faced, striking out one. Carignan might be fast mover which would help a lot.
I watched him last week
and wasn't too impressed. He has a straight fastball that is his only pitch. He'll need a changeup or a slider before he sees Oakland.
FIVE MORE DRAFT PICKS SIGNED TODAY
Five more draft picks were signed today and added to the first 13 that makes a total of 18. The five are:
4th Round pick Travis BANWART RHP Fr Wichita St.
10th Round pick Danny HAMBLIN 1B Fr Univ Arkansas
11th Round pick Michael RICHARD SS Fr Prairie View A&M
22nd Round pick Aaron JENKINS LHP Fr North. Iowa U.
and 35 round pick Herbert HUDSON OF Fr Mt. San Jacinto J.C.
Opening night in Vancouver
Short season ball is set to start tomorrow. Anybody have any news on who will be playing for Vancouver tomorrow?
Should be interesting to see how quickly the recent draftees get started on their pro careers.
