Greatest AN User Names
What makes these names great? Some are great because the names are just hilarious. Others aren't funny but I love seeing their names attached to posts. Some aren't even good user names but they are famous at AN. Some names are just so terrible that I've grown to love them. In fact some that have caused a "that is the worst name ever" reaction from me are actually making my HOF. I don't even like some of these people. But this is about the names.
Apologies to those of you who were left off this list. Almost anything with "oak" or "athletics" in the name was eliminated from consideration. Also, some names that were great were created by people who just didn't post often enough for me to give them the nod. If you post less than Reg, you can't make the list. These are not presented in any particular order. If I had to pick an all time favorite, right now I'd go with PosterNutbag44. I crack up every time I see it. I'm laughing right now.

Can't argue with
PosterNutbag44 at #1.
a good and interesting timekiller...
I hope you enjoyed compiling the list.
My standards are a little more strict. The only usernames that make me smile a little are
FreeSeatUpgrade and Joses bathroom buddy.
Other than those, it's all nomenclature, mine included...

A recent new username I like a lot

RickeySteals is offended
RickeySteals can't see why anyone wouldn't think RickeySteals is the greatest. RickeySteals may not always pay attention to what's going on around here, but he's still got it. RickeySteals could hang with the best of them, if someone would give RickeySteals a chance to post again. RickeySteals has a great eye and can still bring the speed.
lol
RickeySteals should be pissed!

Yes
Great book, and I assume the username is a slightly punnish reference to it. Either that or it's one hell of a coincidence.
i read that, in paperback way back
I lost
and I didn't even know there was a competition. I feel like the Tampa Bay Devil Rays....
I haven't seen much of my favorite
YouSunkMyBlankenship
oooh...
i forgot about that one. i like that one too.

Noting your earlier running diary schtick
I see that the username "Grumpy AN User" is still available.
by FreeSeatUpgrade on Jun 12, 2007 4:24 PM PDT reply actions
you included reztips, but left off Oaktoon?
I dunno, but Oaktoon was pretty famous. And, I would have included monkeyball and GnGGirl, too.
oaktoon
"Almost anything with "oak" or "athletics" in the name was eliminated from consideration."
actually, i agree with you, foolsh.
I considered oaktoon
but decided against it. He's famous but I wouldn't say he has one of the greatest user names. There are many that you could disagree with on my list. These are just the ones that are entertaining to me.
but "jrbh" is?
Reg dislikes primates, mammals and insects.

My favorite for username quality
is beaneandnothingness -- I met her at AN Day 2, I think, but I haven't seen her posting in a long while.
beaneandnothingess is my best friend
and actually doensn't care one bit about baseball. She only created a username so that she could comment on a diary about uniform styles. She's tried to post a couple of times since, but she can't remember her password and doesn't really care enough to try and figure it out. She says "Hi" and thanks for the props!
I'm in! I'm in! I'm in!
Now let's start talking about uniforms people. Sleeveless sucks. Book it.
by BeaneAndNothingness on Jun 13, 2007 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions
I like sleeveless unis...
especially the bright yellow ones the A's used to wear, with the green t-shirts underneath...
And the non-matching white hats the coaches used to wear... absolutely classic!
However, those don't come even close to the beauty of the Astros' rainbow uniforms of the 70's... now that's a baseball uniform!
by The Pilots Dared Me To Die on Jun 13, 2007 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions
I would like sleeveless unis too. . .
if I wanted my baseball players to look like male college cheerleaders. I do, however, completely rock the retro jerseys. An athletic male in a bright, form-fitting, polyester pullover with a wide striped waist band. Hoooo-doggie.
by BeaneAndNothingness on Jun 13, 2007 3:26 PM PDT up reply actions
retro jerseys
they definitely need to use those more. and bring back the futuristic jerseys once in a while (i don't even remember that, i've just heard about it).
I would like to thank the acad-...
wait I didnt even get mentioned? I doubt anyone knows I exist ::cries:::

I'd forgotten about joses bathroom buddy, I love that name. harenshair makes me laugh, too, because Haren's hair looks like it could post on its own. And FrankThomasHasHugeLegs, because, well, he does.
what about me?
I should be on the list, I just don't post that much

HOF:
Reginald Stephen Shipp Bixby
almost reggie (just like the name suggests...the guy was almost named Reggie or something)
Cross yourself off the honorable mention list, lol. "Reg" does nothing for me...has to be part of reggie or reginald.
I like the pairs/groups of usernames that I easily confuse...off the top of my head, there's "mdl" and "mkt", there's "fadedash" and "fade2night", "BruceBochte" and "BruceBochteBiyatches", both of whom have made appearances in this diary...there's "Rickeyfan" and "RickeySteals" (definitely the most easily confused...and there used to be "RunRickeyRun" too, but he must have turned into a San Diego Surf Dawg fan or something), "Rob", "Robb", and the little-known "white rob" (special HOF vote for the last one), "Dan" and "Danny", and of course "Cutthemullet" and "Gene Nelson's Mullet." You've got the two well-known Moneyball reference handles, pickinmachine and notsellingjeans (all we need is a Milo and the most legendary Moneyball quotes will be represented). While on the subject, can't forget monkeyball. Oh, and lastly for the pairs, how about the name that has a pair built in, "kimnjerry." Which if read incorrectly could also be confused with "Ice Cream", I suppose.
There's a lot of people that have names along the lines of ___________A'sFan, saying whatever location they're from. Some people claimed entire states this way...IndianaA'sFan, GreenAndGoldSooner, NorthDakotaA'sFan (I think). But then there's just "Nebraska." I always found that name pretty funny...would anyone post under the name "California?" Jay Witasick came closest when he showed up poorly disguised as "californiagirl"...maybe if Flea or Anthony Kiedis were members of AN...but no one else thought their state could stand alone as a user name. I have to induct Nebraska into my HOF for that ballsy move.
rfloh just looks awesome, I have no idea what it means. It makes me think of the beyond stupid "ROFLMAO", though, so I'm going to let the veteran's committee issue the verdict there.
Cool confusing pairs aside, I don't like that some people apparently drew such a mental blank when confronted with the AN registration screen that they just used their names...c'mon, Nate/Gerard, that's lazy. I expect better of you, Jennifer/Sharon/Larry E/every other person who has a name like this. Sal's borderline, at least you're left guessing about the significance of the number. Blez too...shortening his last name, maybe acceptable.
I actually like The Dogfather, because sometimes I read it as a takeoff of The Godfather, other times of The "Blogfather".
"jrbh" is only good because it reminds me of The Oaktoon Before Oaktoon...poster formerly known as Jeff Beresford-Howe. I remember when I first stumbled on AN, reading that guy's posts the most, thinking, wow, this guy has no life, posting this much on here...three years later, I'm that same guy posting on AN with no life! Well, not quite the same guy, luckily I don't think I've pissed people off to the point where I'm considering suicide ie a move to Davenport, Iowa (lol, that was great stuff). After I finally submit this post, I might have to read through the comments of the first diary I posted on AN, so I can rehash the great argument between jrbh and I about how to define a "career year." devo and others were arguing with him, too, but they were railing against his siding with Ray Ratto in seeing the A's as Royals-esque.
Yeah, that about wraps it up...well, I'll add more if I think of any that I'd put on my HOF ballot. I'm glad to be on the first ballot...I'll take a plaque in Chico over one in Cooperstown any day.
oh...
and if there's going to be a Milo, I'd rather see "I am Phil Milo" or something as opposed to "Put a Milo on Him!", for originality
by Cutthemullet on Jun 13, 2007 3:44 AM PDT up reply actions
another
AN elder "jarforcefatherofforce" was always a name that I liked, especially in tandem with his signature, which read simply, "Jim".
oh and as far as claiming states, I overlooked the obvious with Alaska A.

another similar pair that gets respect
"alox" and "Alon"
by Cutthemullet on Jun 13, 2007 4:36 AM PDT up reply actions
Thanks!
Finally, an honorable mention. My goals in life are finally complete.
I have to say...
I like both names better backwards. Alon would be nola, or rather NOLA, which all of a sudden is the cool way to refer to New Orleans, their answer to Atlanta's ATL it seems...yours is xola, which phonetically is Zola, both a sweet Italian soccer player from the late 90's and a French...playwright I think, he just has cred here because Sartre refers to him. I don't know if he was actually lumped in with the existentialists or not, I forget the context of Sartre's reference...to wikipedia we go
by Cutthemullet on Jun 15, 2007 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions
probably only I care, so...
the introductory sentence will suffice:
Émile Zola (2 April 1840 – 29 September 1902) was an influential French novelist, the most important example of the literary school of naturalism, and a major figure in the political liberalization of France.
The bio is pretty short, anyway...I think the guy deserves more space than that which is devoted to, say, the list of [non Oakland] MLB players' intro music, but whoever created/maintains the page must not agree.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89m...
"Civilization will not attain perfection until the last stone from the last church falls on the last priest." — Émile Zola
hmm, I don't really know how to pronounce his first name, I'm no linguist...does Emile rhyme with naivete? (with the accent, I'm thinking EH-meel rather than, uh, IH-mi-LAY or something, but...)
nevertheless, sounds rather interesting.
by Cutthemullet on Jun 15, 2007 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions
It's not just an appetizer
It's A-MEAL.
I always liked Edward Abbey's retelling of Zola's wise words: "Mankind will not be free until the last general is strangled with the entrails of the last systems-analyst. As my sainted grandmother used to say."

These are some excellent points, CTM
Several of these great users were removed from my list because there were too many similar names. I was, however, super close to putting both Robb and white rob on there.
BruceBochteBiyatches was considered but 3B came to AN just after BruceBochte did, and I was forced to select just one. Nebraska just missed the cut. Damn, forgot about rfloh. Definitely a great name.
I agree that using the first name is pretty damn lazy. But, after years on this site, I am at the point where I laugh whenever I see Jennifer or Sharon, partly because they are funny and partly because they were much much much lazier in selecting their names than people with names like "Big Mac Homers" or "OaklandRULZ" or whatever.
I'm glad you like Reginald Stephen Shipp Bixby. I'm actually thinking of going back to that (but definitely not rssb).
appreciate the consideration...
...of almost being on the "list"
however, what the heck is special about "Bruce Bochte"? other than a clutch Athletic in the mid 80's who sported the spectacles?
i'd like to think if you had chose between 3B vs 2B, the more B, the more power?
time to develop my OWN list. (not that i'm bitter anything). btw, excellent diary
by BruceBochteBiyatches on Jun 13, 2007 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions
so reginald stephen shipp bixby
is your real name? i thought you were making fun of your arch enemy jeffrey beresford-howe.
and misfit, wasn't that just you posting under a different username?
rssb
No, it's not my real name. I kind of wish it was. It was in fact inspired by jrbh. Misfit was really not me. I think it rules that someone still thinks it was me. Misfit is my friend. He is actually a great guy who got a little carried away (although you may not think that from his posts).
I also like "Nebraska"
I think mine is the closest (that I know of) to being just "California", at least in spirit.
I thought it was smack of a different sort...
Yes, cuz I sport the emaciated "heroin chic" look
<ahem>
Paris?
Is that you?
you know what...
If it's okay with you, Poppy, can I just go back to thinking that you're a 300 lb. 50 yr old Mexican guy who smokes a lot of pot? Many of your posts look better in that context.
Thank you kindly,
SPWC

stereotyping is so rampant on AN
basically, you're not Mexican enough
by Cutthemullet on Jun 15, 2007 6:45 PM PDT up reply actions
the amazing thing is...
not long after I posted this, an older user (I think the uder ID was lower than mine) with the handle "Arizona" came out of the woodwork and commented in another diary. I question his motives...I think he was faking interest in the actual discussion to try to bask in the state-name glory I bestowed upon Nebraska. Arizona's more trite, anyway...bad jeans company, wannabe SoBe beverage company...
by Cutthemullet on Jun 15, 2007 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions
uder ID
the id, the ego, the superego...and now add to that the uder id...psychoanalysis has just been revolutionized through what surely must have looked like a mere typo.
by Cutthemullet on Jun 15, 2007 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions
great comment
entertaining and amusing, that was almost diary-worthy.
and congrats on only responding to your own comment three times.
heh, thanks
I think 3 replies to self is about the O/U for me. But, this was a rare instance where they were all replies to the original comment, rather than successive replies to replies.
Your name warranted mention in the borderline-lazy-slightly-modified-first-name section, by the way...I think the reason I omitted it was because people have often assumed you were referring to Xbox...I guess "haskar" must have equaled "o" in a Cryptoquip puzzle some day (does anyone under the age of 65 do those puzzles besides me? If not, look beyond the Sudoku someday, you'll be happy you did.) Made sense in old-school AN where you did go by just xbx, though...
I'd also like to take this opportunity to induct my last AN user into the username HOF: LowcountryJoe. I don't know what just triggered the memory of that AN martyr...maybe the fact that the Weather Channel Storm Stories episode that is airing in the next room is about the potential of hurricane obliterating Savannah, Georgia, I don't know. Anyway...let the Tim Hardaway debate live on through the plastic (we don't do bronze here) homage to LCJ in Chico.
by Cutthemullet on Jun 15, 2007 6:29 PM PDT up reply actions
uh...
hey AN, if you're going to add extra space between the first and second paragraphs of my posts, at least put it to good use and sell it to advertisers. SuperCuts would be apropos.

+1 for LongLiveLangerhans
McFood, monkeyball, and Duke of Left Field have been my faves. Any time I see McFood I think of Groundskeeper Willie. monkeyball's cool because it's not only a play on the book title, but also a successful video game franchise.
I just realized that reztips is spitzer backwards.
And is it fade dash or faded ash?
LOL... it's faded ash
I had the same question a while ago...
I think my favorite
of all time is "apricot." Least favorite (no offense to the user) is "suck my moneyballs."
Holy Crap!
What a great diary! I can't believe I totally missed it until today.
A couple of my faves I haven't seen mentioned:
Dr. Pez
Zonis
and the short lived, completely inappropriate and tastelessy offensive slam at ohad, which was "homohad", because of his flimsy excuse that his real name was Homer Ohad-something-or-other.
Billy Bucko is another good one...
because of the "different language" word play.
can i be second
team honorable mention? ok. i'll change my an user name to blue moon and mudcat too. hof si?
