Dan Meyer Continuing To Make Strides at Sacto

I've been around here for a long time, but rarely post anymore.

I do however, seem to have a bit of history of being one of Dan Meyer's longest and strongest supporters through his litany of injury woes over the past two seasons, so I figured I would keep bringing up to the forefront as he continues on the comeback trail.

Meyer overpowers but wants staying power

I still have the strangest feeling that this guy is going to be a difference maker as the #5 starter sometime between the All Star Break and August 1st. He's the only starter in AAA with a true upside, and though I'm sure the front office would prefer to bring him along very slowly, I envision a scenario where the A's go into August 3-4 games out and with four solid starters - the temptation may be too much to resist.

sorry i don't get over-excited by ONE start

Game 1: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
Game 2: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
Game 3: 4.0 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K
Game 4: 4.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 1 K
Game 5: 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K
Game 6: 4.1 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
Game 7: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 9 K

4 straight starts (until this last one) where he had more walks than strikeouts.  Not once has he gotten into the 6th inning.

Total: 7 GS, 33 IP, 20 BB, 25 K

Forgive me for not being optimistic after ONE good performance.  String a few more in a row, without the walks, and I'll be changing my tune.

I agree
He looks good, but still has some bugs to work out before he's major league ready.

When he can go seven innings regularly with a K/9 of 7ish then I'll jump on the band wagon, but until then I think we all need to recognize that he's been injured for the last two years and will need a LOT of time at AAA to relearn how to pitch.

by Threepwood XX on Jun 1, 2007 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

It's unlikely he'll be up this year

but all things considered, it's actually a good start.  It'll be another month or two for him to work out the bugs before you can judge whether he's "back" or not.  Until then even if he could, I doubt you'll see much more than 5 innings at a time for a guy who hasn't pitched in 2 years.

Learning to Pitch

He's probably learning to "pitch" right now - Last I heard (about 1 month ago) was that Meyer was throwing between 85-87 MPH.  If he can get hitters out with this kind of stuff, he's doing something right.

The Question:  Will he regain the arm strength to start throwing 90-93 on a consistent basis?  If he can't, we will never see Meyer in the Green & Gold.

by Colorado Fan on Jun 1, 2007 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Tell you what....

You try basically not pitching (or competing) for two years, after throwing constantly for 10+ years, and lets see how long it takes you to be able to spot your pitches within an inch or two of where you want them.

It takes time. I'm most encouraged by the fact that he's thrown over 100 pitches in 4 straight starts with no pain whatsoever.

He didn't have control problems pre-injury, and if he's truly pain-free, the control will come back over a period of time.

uh hold on

I'm not doubting that what he's been able to do so far is a good sign.  I'm not getting all excited over one start, though.

Like you said, he hasn't pitched for two years.  Do you see me making claims that he'll be the 5th starter  somewhere after the ASB?

You should be preaching to yourself.

This is why I don't come around this place...

....anymore.

Apparently you aren't allowed to have an opinion here without a boatload of people coming at you with both with guns blazing full of negativity, and trying to ridicule someone that is nothing more then one person's opinion.

So take a hike, or go to hell. I don't really give a crap. I'm done with this ridiculous place for good.

before you go...

what uniforms prompted the comment in your sig?  That's a pretty funny quote.

by Cutthemullet on Jun 1, 2007 11:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Uniforms....

Oakland vs. Seattle, August 4, 2006.

Vince announced the lineups, and stated that the A's were in their alternative green jerseys, and the Mariners were in their alternative navy blue jerseys.

Korach made a reference to the difficulty in telling the two dark colors apart on their monitors, or from the distance of the press box (one or the other - I forget which), then made the statement in my quote.

For some reason, it just really struck me as both funny and poignant, because it was almost as if he was channeling Bill King for a moment, since Bill was such a traditionalist and tended to see those kinds of things as an abomination.

Don't overreact

I respect your opinion that Meyer could very well be a plus fifth starter and in the best case scenario be a Jered Weaver a la last year.

But fadedash does bring up some legitimate concerns.    Remember we're all A's fans here and though we may not be as optimistic about the chances of Meyer succeeding, we all would love to see it happen.

you are allowed to have an opinion

just as I am.  But when I expressed my opinion, you decided to get snippy.

by fadedash on Jun 2, 2007 9:24 AM PDT up reply actions

Apologies....and a little philosophy

Been a few days, so this probably won't get read, but it's important to me, so here it is.

I need to apologize for two things. 1) To fadedash for telling him to go to hell. That wasn't right. It's not me or what I'm about. I haven't been myself lately and have been snapping as everyone, but that doesn't excuse it. So I apologize for that. 2) For my original response to fadedash. He called it "snippy". It wasn't meant that way (tone is so hard to convey in text), but after re-reading it a few days later, it definitely read that way.

Others here did a far better job then I did later in the thread of conveying my thoughts. I don't imagine Meyer would be a world-beater if he was called up late in the year. But if the choice is between Komine or Windsor (who look like AAAA guys to me), or Meyer, I give Meyer a shot based purely on the upside he may still yet bring.

I also agree that his velocity needs to be above 85-87 (although the same thing was said about Duke, and he's at least made an 86-88 mph fastball work in a setup role).

I should also point out that I wasn't looking at just one start. I was looking at the fact that he'd made 9 consecutive starts, was reportedly pain-free, and had topped 100 pitches in each of the last 4 (now 5) starts. His WHIP is way too high still. But after the horror of his past 2 seasons, the overall picture, while not completely there yet, is encouraging and on an upward curve.

Last, I'll admit to having difficulty with being criticized, but that wasn't what set me off here. I guess I have a different view of being a fan then most. I tend toward the optimistic - eagerly looking forward to each new game no matter what the current win-loss record is (the first A's season I really remember was the 1979 club that went 54-108). I can't imagine what this place would look like if this team was that bad. The attendance at one of the games I went to that season was 762!!

It just doesn't get any worse then that club, so to me, it's mostly good most of the time. :-)

I just don't get the venom that is spewed here by so many "fans" towards so many players of the team that they supposedly love. Yes, I get frustrated with Chavez too, but I don't rant on about how he "sucks", how he's "worthless" and so forth. I just can't believe that the people who write these things would ever have the courage to say these things to a players face, and if they do....well, then the world's in a whole lot more trouble then I thought. :)

Sooner or later, maybe I'll finally begin to realize that even though I'm only 37, my mind functions in a completely different era - one where common courtesy, decency, and respect reigned supreme. I write as if the person I'm talking about will absolutely read what I'm saying, so I'm mindful to try and be as balanced as I can be, and still respectful even when I'm critical.

Yes, I didn't show much of any of those things toward fadedash in the Meyer diary, so that's why I'm writing this now, to remind myself of what I'm all about, and what I believe in - even if I'm the only man on earth standing on that platform in 2007.

Thanks for listening....
~Mike

From reading that tread

it sounds more like you're having a problem with someone else's opinion.  fadedash simply brought up a valid point about Meyer's MLB readiness.  You obviously view it as a good stride towards making a comeback (due to his injury problems), while he's withholding judgement until later after he becomes more consistent and improves his perpherials.  From my experience with fadedash's views, he's generally adamant about his opinions but hardly disrespectful which is the key towards a good, honest discourse.

Interesting, DMOAS, because
I really respect your opinion but I wonder how many agree with the assessment of "generally adamant...but hardly disrespectful". Maybe in this thread, but in general? Hmm...

that I'm the type who after a personal attack gets made against me instead of being insulted is left wondering how they knew me so well.  Or maybe subconsciously I typoed "thread" as "tread" because I should know better?

While were on the subject

Was anybody there last night for Meyer's start? I'm curious about velocity, how he looked, etc.

Meyer is working...

... in the 88 to 91 mph range... He hit 92 from time to time... topping out at 93

I also have been optomistic about Meyer

His ERA is good and the nine K's are awesome.  However, both that he can't last deep into games and that he hasn't often struck out many worry me.  If he does in the next month or so, I could imagine him making an August debut.

I'm also curious about his stuff and if he's back to low 90's he could really, really help us.

oh...

and if Meyer's "overpowering" people throwing 85-87 (there was no mention of velocity in the article, just going on what CF said above), striking out six consecutive batters and nine overall in five innings...that's kind of like when Saarloos, uh, overpowered the Indians last year for 10+ K's.

i think we're looking at meyer the wrong way

being that he hasn't really pitched in 2 years, it seems way too optimistic to expect him to be sharp this season, let alone make it to the big show. what he is showing right now is that he is pain-free (i hope so, at least) and managing to pull out 5 innings as a starter without his best stuff (a slower fastball, and problematic command, both obvious products of his rustiness). hopefully he can get thru the rest of this season w/out any injury issues and gets his best "stuff" back at some point. if so, he would have learned how to pitch in a season without it, be 100% for the first time since the trade, and probably be a serious contender for the rotation next year.

he probably needs to just keep pitching

at AAA all this year. Hopefully he'll continue to get stronger. I don't think the A's can get a good read on whether he'll be able to pitch for them until next year.

by OaklandSi on Jun 2, 2007 10:24 AM PDT up reply actions

exactly

let's hope he gets thru the year healthy at AAA. by the end of the season, he'll be further along his recovery, stronger and sharper. i still think he can be a very good pitcher for us. right now, though, my evaluation of him is a) is he making every start?, b) is he going 80-100 pitches each time?, c) is he pain-free? if all 3 of these are happening, i think he'll be fine by the end of the year.

Fastball and command

The fact that his fastball is apparently 5-8 MPH slower than before could result in him being less FITZ and hence more walks than anyone would like. Hopefully, both situations will work themselves out for the better.
