Open Thread: Game 29 - A's at Tampa Bay (cont)
One batter, two pitchers, two mistakes.
A's and Rays going into extra innings at 2-2, after Wigginton hits his second HR of the night, off of Street leading off the 9th to tie it.
If only the A's could put enough men on in the 10th to get to Kendall ...

Apparently Reyes has...
...a "lot of moxie"?
Any else know how that's valued these days in relation to "grit" and "clutch"?
by GreenNGoldSooner on May 5, 2007 7:09 PM PDT reply actions
I think Moxie is a 1.02 on th intangible standard
Grit is at 3.50
Clutch is at 4.31
Hustle is at .72 though
But there is a 3x multiplier if you were a punter!
So at a certain point...
...the tie is broken by how many leadoff runners you got on, right?

unfortunately, NO (it don't work that way!)

I wish that I could have seen
Stewart save the day. Saturdays are meant for sitting around watching the game. :-(
I Hate Everything About The Rays
Tampa is a dumb place to play baseball given the summer weather.
The uniforms suck.
The dome blows.
The mascot is hideous.
The entire operation is just entirely worthless.
Wait...I take my opening statement back. I hate the Yankees.
The Rays aren't even worth the effort.

His only remaining skill
Kendall, I mean.
If we don't score now, this offense should officially resign.

Well, no, but you get what I mean.
by GreenNGoldSooner on May 5, 2007 7:21 PM PDT reply actions
oh we fucking dropped one alright
Why is Snelling bunting?
He's one of our only threats.
All right, some tough love. Get a hit, Stewart, you absolutely awful baseball player that is only playing because less awful hitters are injured.

by Chavinator on May 5, 2007 7:24 PM PDT up reply actions
That IS really terrific news.
Next inning will be
A fly out into in a double play. We are so creative offensively.
Every time there's an A's double play
Kendall is involved. This is very bad.
If that were really the case...
...there'd be a simple solution.
by GreenNGoldSooner on May 5, 2007 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions
Do you think teams around the league...
look at our offense and laugh? I mean maybe that's what Billy is going for. Just break the other teams concentration because our offense is so pathetic.
the Cards and White Sox
apparently have worse team BA than we do...
*thats* possible?
Jesus. I guess Kendall is taking it personally and really trying to do it all himself!
At this point....
...this team could get the first six batters in an inning on base and still not score.

I hate this offense
They will be one game under or over .500 after tonight. This while getting the best 30 games of starting pitching in the history of the franchise.
And the truth is, with some brief respites, this has been an offense worth hating for a long time.
I mean, hasn't everybody figured out that most of us are thrilled to see Snelling and Cust hit because we are so pained having to see Chavez, Stewart, Ellis, Kendall, Crosby, and several other hit.
well said...
every time i see any of these guys bat its like i expect an out...or in the case of Kendall, two outs. I actually cannot remember rooting for a baseball team with an offense. I think the last 3 years have erased any memories i might have had....
Thank God this guy's name
Wigginton up.
Oh crap.

No kidding
felt like my heart stopped when Doyle lost the ball that Stewart caught. And it's only May 5th!
Favorite mlb.tv Mosaic "feature"
If you don't fiddle with it every once in a while, it simply turns your game off and you need to rebuffer and start anew.

Confident we can win in 12th
Swisher is hitting, right? That's a major league hitter. If any of those .240 monsters get on, we're in business.
And, by the way, is Eric Chavez ever going to be worth getting excited about at the plate? I mean like in the second half of 2001. The guy is amazingly consistent in being a completely mediocre middle of the order guy.
And Mark Ellis' 2005 really was an aberration.
(Just venting).
And Bobby Crosby will never be any good. Okay, I realize I'm late to that party.
And Dan Johnson is just filler.
And Jason Kendall is the single worst hitter in the major leagues.
And Travis Buck is playing at the wrong level.
And we won't remember Shannon Stewart in one year.
(What else?)
Mike Piazza: on a pace to hit 5 homers before the injury.
Feel free to add to this. I need a relief from listening to our team hit in the top of the next inning.
An inning I've predicted we'll score in, by the way.
Lugo?!
If we can't hit this guy....

Impressive at bat by Chavez
He's just a total piece of crap. The Mike Dunleavy of the Oakland A's.
(And, as predicted, the one hitter delivered.)
Dan Johnson intentionally walked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How awful do they think Crosby is. I mean, he's not Kendall.
Let's go Bobby.
Can we trade Chavy to Indiana?
OK, they don't have a team, but you know, if they did.
It would make some sense
It would, Nico...
If you thought a hit by anybody after him was more likely than needing him to hit a homer in the 14th.
By my calculations, the home run is 3x more likely.

Because you never expected anything from him?
not really
It would just add some interest to the game to have someone different ground out with two runners on.

Joe Kennedy should personally stab each and

I just checked...
the Vegas odds and the inning over under on us scoring is inning 73. There is no way that this team can score a run unless there is a catastrophic meltdown and one - or several - of the rays players suffer some form of dymensia and either throw the ball into the stands or physically carry one of our players around the bases.
I know Crosby can't hit
but at least he provides great defense.
Oh, wait.....
Infield single to SS?
Please tell me this was another Crosby fuck up.
Did Crosby really screw up?
News of Crosby's suckitude brings me some happiness.

if matt barnes...
wasn't a bay area athlete i'd care so much more about this. but i kinda just have to sit back and chuckle. I mean our outfield today consisted of Stewart - who was recently carbon dated to an age of 12,334,431, some dude from Australia named Doyle and Buck - who can barely grip a bat.
I hate it when our single-A pitcher
Agree, agree, agree
holding the Rays to three runs over 12 is a tremendous job of pitching (other than Street to Wigginton).

mercy killing. thank you. seriously.
Crosby and Kendall
between their awful at-bats and questionable defense they contributed more than their fair share to the loss.
Crosby has a few good at-bats and then takes a few steps back. Kendall just keeps taking steps back.
by IndianaAsfan on May 5, 2007 7:51 PM PDT reply actions
I want details!
How did Crosby screw up in the field, and should it have been called an error?
didnt get the ball out of his glove
made a good stop and could have thrown out
Zobrist at first but dropped the ball...
Crosby gave them an extra out and the D-rays
capitalised.
by oak1 on May 5, 2007 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't know
if it should have been an error. It would have been a close play at first - soft ball up the middle and Crosby tried to corral it and dropped it when he went to throw to first. Calling it a single wasn't unreasonable, but I didn't like the fact that Crosby couldn't even make the throw to get a close play.
by IndianaAsfan on May 5, 2007 7:54 PM PDT up reply actions
Crosby
deserves to be sent down. Didnt produce at the
plate in the top of the inning and lost it for the a's defensively in the bottom of the inning.
by oak1 on May 5, 2007 7:51 PM PDT reply actions
Wow.
Every year I say that I am going to give these guys the benefit of the doubt and not get down on the team. And when the wave of 10-12 injuries comes I always say, tough luck, next year they will be healthy.
I am beginning to that we need all new players...Not really sure who we'd want to keep around. I mean I love Haren, but he's really the only player other than Street that has any value to other major league teams. Can you trade with foreign leagues? Our team could probably compete in Mexico...
Folks, the good thing
tomorrow is another day. Let's say our prays and hope for some good offense and defense. We can say Crosby and Kendall suck, which they do, but in the end the team needs to play as a team and pick up where others are failing. Love Chavvy and Ellie, but their bats need to wake up, Swish needs to heal, and the rest of us just need to think positive. LET'S GO OAKLAND!!!
Tomorrow is another day?

Why would Geren not intentionally walk Harris in that situation? I didn't have TV access tonight so I was getting the play by play from Game Center. As soon as I saw that Harris was hitting .529 (9-17)against LHP this year I thought they had to seriously consider it. I checked on Baldelli's numbers and he is hitting .174 against LHP. I don't get it.
