Open Thread: Game 29 - A's at Tampa Bay (cont)

One batter, two pitchers, two mistakes.

A's and Rays going into extra innings at 2-2, after Wigginton hits his second HR of the night, off of Street leading off the 9th to tie it.

If only the A's could put enough men on in the 10th to get to Kendall ...

They will be one game under or over .500 after tonight. This while getting the best 30 games of starting pitching in the history of the franchise.

And the truth is, with some brief respites, this has been an offense worth hating for a long time.

I mean, hasn't everybody figured out that most of us are thrilled to see Snelling and Cust hit because we are so pained having to see Chavez, Stewart, Ellis, Kendall, Crosby, and several other hit.

Confident we can win in 12th

Swisher is hitting, right? That's a major league hitter. If any of those .240 monsters get on, we're in business.

And, by the way, is Eric Chavez ever going to be worth getting excited about at the plate? I mean like in the second half of 2001. The guy is amazingly consistent in being a completely mediocre middle of the order guy.

And Mark Ellis' 2005 really was an aberration.

(Just venting).

And Bobby Crosby will never be any good. Okay, I realize I'm late to that party.

And Dan Johnson is just filler.

And Jason Kendall is the single worst hitter in the major leagues.

And Travis Buck is playing at the wrong level.

And we won't remember Shannon Stewart in one year.

(What else?)

Mike Piazza: on a pace to hit 5 homers before the injury.

Feel free to add to this. I need a relief from listening to our team hit in the top of the next inning.

An inning I've predicted we'll score in, by the way.

the Vegas odds and the inning over under on us scoring is inning 73.  There is no way that this team can score a run unless there is a catastrophic meltdown and one - or several - of the rays players suffer some form of dymensia and either throw the ball into the stands or physically carry one of our players around the bases.

Did Crosby really screw up?

News of Crosby's suckitude brings me some happiness.

Yep. Warm and fuzzy... that's me.

if matt barnes...

wasn't a bay area athlete i'd care so much more about this.  but i kinda just have to sit back and chuckle.  I mean our outfield today consisted of Stewart - who was recently carbon dated to an age of 12,334,431, some dude from Australia named Doyle and Buck - who can barely grip a bat.

loses it before our single-A offense can have another chance to hit.

A's had tons of chances

I don't blame the pitchers at all for this loss.

3 runs over 12 innings?

Can't blame the pitching.

Agree, agree, agree

holding the Rays to three runs over 12 is a tremendous job of pitching (other than Street to Wigginton).

Crosby and Kendall

between their awful at-bats and questionable defense they contributed more than their fair share to the loss.
Crosby has a few good at-bats and then takes a few steps back.  Kendall just keeps taking steps back.

I want details!

How did Crosby screw up in the field, and should it have been called an error?

Yep. Warm and fuzzy... that's me.

Groundball to Crosby, he dives to catch it

and forgets to take the ball out of his glove when throwing to first.

didnt get the ball out of his glove

made a good stop and could have thrown out
Zobrist at first but dropped the ball...

Crosby gave them an extra out and the D-rays
capitalised.

by grover on May 5, 2007 7:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know

if it should have been an error.  It would have been a close play at first - soft ball up the middle and Crosby tried to corral it and dropped it when he went to throw to first.  Calling it a single wasn't unreasonable, but I didn't like the fact that Crosby couldn't even make the throw to get a close play.

Crosby

deserves to be sent down. Didnt produce at the
plate in the top of the inning and lost it for the a's defensively in the bottom of the inning.

I am disappointed,

Losing in extra innings...doubly sucks.

by IM4Oakgal on May 5, 2007 7:52 PM PDT reply actions

Wow.

Every year I say that I am going to give these guys the benefit of the doubt and not get down on the team.  And when the wave of 10-12 injuries comes I always say, tough luck, next year they will be healthy.

I am beginning to that we need all new players...Not really sure who we'd want to keep around.  I mean I love Haren, but he's really the only player other than Street that has any value to other major league teams.  Can you trade with foreign leagues?  Our team could probably compete in Mexico...

by CyZito on May 5, 2007 7:56 PM PDT reply actions

Folks, the good thing

tomorrow is another day.  Let's say our prays and hope for some good offense and defense. We can say Crosby and Kendall suck, which they do, but in the end the team needs to play as a team and pick up where others are failing.  Love Chavvy and Ellie, but their bats need to wake up, Swish needs to heal, and the rest of us just need to think positive.  LET'S GO OAKLAND!!!

Tomorrow is another day?

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn!

I'm kidding, of course.
It's just when I hear "tomorrow is another day," I always think of this, and so it seems kind of futile and creepily neo-Confederate...not that you meant any of that!

(Actually, I agree with you on the substance...)

Should have given the IBB

Why would Geren not intentionally walk Harris in that situation? I didn't have TV access tonight so I was getting the play by play from Game Center. As soon as I saw that Harris was hitting .529 (9-17)against LHP this year I thought they had to seriously consider it. I checked on Baldelli's numbers and he is hitting .174 against LHP. I don't get it.

by Larry E on May 5, 2007 8:01 PM PDT reply actions

Baldelli is just
a far better hitter than Harris is. I think pitching to Harris was the right call.
