The 25-man roster is a misnomer.
So, out of morbid curiosity, I thought we'd let's take a quick look at a list of everyone who has been on the A's 25-man roster so far this season:
Starting pitchers: Dan Haren, Joe Blanton, Rich Harden, Chad Gaudin, Joe Kennedy, Dallas Braden, Colby Lewis
Relief pitchers: Huston Street, Justin Duchscherer, Kiko Calero, Alan Embree, Jay Witasick, Jay Marshall, Lenny DiNardo, Connor Robertson, Ron Flores
Catchers: Jason Kendall, Adam Melhuse
Infielders: Dan Johnson, Todd Walker, Mark Ellis, Bobby Crosby, Eric Chavez, Marco Scutaro
Outfielders: Milton Bradley, Nick Swisher, Shannon Stewart, Bobby Kielty, Travis Buck, Danny Putnam, Ryan Langerhans, Chris Snelling, Hiram Bocachica, Donnie Murphy
Designated Hitters: Mike Piazza, Jack Cust
So, 36 so far, with two more names coming onto the list soon in Kotsay and Loaiza.
Is there some sort of record for number of player's on a team's 25-man roster before a certain date?

and the difference of the squares is the sum
36-25=5+6
spooky....
you can thank pythagorous for that one
by jubjub on May 24, 2007 5:41 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Uh, no?
Pthagorous's contribution was A^2 + B^2 = C^2,
where A and B are the lengths of the short sides of a right triangle, and C is the length of the long side.
(X+1)^2 - (X)^2 = X + (X+1) is simple algebra.
(X+1)^2 = (X+1)(X+1) = X^2 + 1 * X + X * 1 + 1 * 1 = X^2 + (X+1) + X.
Subtract X^2, and you have your answer.
But you knew that already.

I think we need to sacrifice that live rooster
in order to take the hex off of our team.

Amazing!
Btw, Murphy is an infielder. He may be competing for the 2b spot with Melillo next year (if we let Ellie go). Remarkably Murphy is actually younger and hitting better at AAA yet he is never mentioned.

i was gonna post a diary about that
but then looked at the splits, and he'd need to do better against righties to be an everyday player

Pretty much
He didn't accept the assignment to Sacramento, so he was released. At this point he'd probably sign with whatever team would promise to put him on the 25-man roster, but has no interest in going back to the minors.
As we basically saw here, he doesn't field well enough to play a major league second base, and he doesn't hit well enough to play first.

Well that number may increase. Has anyone
replaced Connor Robertson yet? I have lost count, it is rather dizzying.

Something I have been curious about
and this diary seemed as good a place as any to ask.
We currently (w/ guys on the 60 day DL) have 44 men on our 40 man roster. Now Denorfia will be on the DL all year, but what is going to happen when Kotsay, Loaiza and Piazza come off the DL? Don't we have to take someone off of the 40 man roster (i.e. DFA someone) to make room? If so, we are almost certain to lose some of the following guys:
Casilla, Komine, Winsdsor, Shafer, Lewis, Bocachica, Putnum.
Just curious if anyone knows if my read on this is correct, that if we activate a guy from the 60 day DL we have to DFA someone on the 40 man roster.

Snelling is probably dead, so he will stay on the
60 day DL until next season, Bradley can go to the 60, and Buck it seems like Buck will need surgery, and will go to the 60 day, and I can see a couple of small trades.

Snelling is on the 15-day DL not the 60-day...
I think Kielty is on the 60-day DL, though.

DFA - or
Place someone else on the 60 day DL. With Kotsay due back pretty soon, I would predict that either Harden or Street are the most likely candidates for the 60 Day DL.
Harden was DL'd on th 16'th or April and so if placed on the 60 day DL could - if I understand correctly still be eligible for return in mid June. He is highly unlikely to return before then anyway as he isn't even throwing now, and would need a few rehab starts. So I wouldn't think he has any chance of being back before the ASB at the earliest.

It's really ridiculous
The first six or so didn't faze me, as the grizzled six-year A's fan that I am, but...I think it was right around the Snelling injury when it hit me that this team was starting to defy even A's expectations for injuries. It's when the guys filling in for injured guys start to get injured when it becomes laughable. I was lucky enough to stumble upon that game (which was the otherwise awesome slaughter of KC) right as it was starting at a casino sportsbook...first non A's-Yankees matchup I'd been able to catch on TV. The offensive outburst was an awesome sight to behold, but when Snelling came up lame I I forgot about the scoreboard and thought only about who should be held accountable for the rash of injuries. I'm still left wondering.
