Duchscherer to DL
Closer #2 joins Closer #1 on the DL. We'd better start losing or winning games by 5 or so.

Well
At some point you just have to go, "This team is going to do whatever it does this year, and all I can do is enjoy the positives, wherever they may pop up."
That point for me was when Eric Chavez struck out with runners on 2nd and 3rd yesterday and the next inning it was revealed Buck had left the game.

True but sad
2007 seems to be a wash as I've said before.
Frustrating as it may be, 2007 just doesn't seem to be our year.

Have you ever made a positive post?
You said last year wasn't our year all fricking year long too.
We made the ALCS.
Your track record of pessimism is abysmal and almost always wrong.

wherever they may pop up?
At bat with runners in scoring position?

Maybe Scutaro can close
lets see if he REALLY is a utility player

not really that surprising
and they are so needy in the pen that they're keeping Robertson. To make room for Lewis on the 40-man roster they've DFA'ed Jeremy Brown....bye-bye Mr. Moneyball.

and Chavez isn't playing tonight
at least he's not starting. Scutaro will start at third tonight.

See how far the "Badger" has fallen.
I should have had him autograph my copy of moneyball when I had the chance.

With Duke going on the DL
a little blood wasn't going to get Robertson sent down.

Chavez not in the lineup today
Scutaro playing 3B

Why do people on this site always seem to throw..
in the towel? And so early too. It annoys me. It's a long season and we aren't that far behind. Plus you would think at some point that a few crucial players like Harden,Duke and Street will come back. it's waaay too early to talk about 2007 as a wash.

so then dont talk about it
ignore it

I agree,
this site is abundant in pessimism. Although it looks bleak, the season is 1/4 of the way over. Many things can change for the better with 3/4 of the way to go. The Angels will not keep up this torrid pace. If this was football, sure, maybe the season would be over. There are simply way too many games left to quit on this year.
by SwisherSweet33 on May 22, 2007 4:25 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You say things can change...
I agree.
But the thing that needs to change is the need for a MASH unit in the A's clubhouse. When the Hell are we going to get healthy?
by grover on May 22, 2007 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I repeat, 3/4 of the season are left.
It is way too early to quit on this team. Feel free to leave, I'll have more empty space around me at the Colliseum. The playoffs are still a definite possibility.
In a worst case scenario, this year has given us abundant hope for the future. Buck, Cust, Johnson, resurgance of Crosby (who most of you wanted to throw on the scrap heap earlier this year), Guadin, etc have proven that this team does not need to rebuild, but rather reload.
by SwisherSweet33 on May 22, 2007 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Who said anything about quiting?
When the fuck is this team going to get healthy? Billy's running out of band-aids, if the A's don't get some healthy bodies soon the season WILL be over. In case you haven't noticed, the A's keep putting more and more bodies on the DL. Our back-up closer just got added today. Buck has also missed a ton of time.
Crosby's had a good month, tis true. He also sucked ass in April. We've seen Bobby have good streaks before. We've also seen him fall out of such streaks. This has been his best month with the bat in two years. That's all it is until he shows otherwise.
And just to inject a bit of realism here, neither Cust or Gaudin or even DJ for that matter have proven themselves over the duration of a big league season. They simply haven't. Let's hold off on the cries of "Jubilee!" for a while.
by grover on May 22, 2007 10:25 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Who shouted Jubilee?
Maybe somebody in Orange County, but not around here. It's a question of dire straits vs. terminally dead hopes.

Jubilee?
Isn't that this outfit?
(hint)

Some of them gave up before the season started
And if you ask them about last year they will say it was a disappointment. They won't post when the A's do well and they jump all over the negatives. They think it makes them look smart to predict a bad year on the off chance that Beane actually fields a loser.
They bitched and moaned all season about how awful the A's were and that there should be a fire sale and that it was all over, blah blah blah.
ALCS anybody?
Bejeezuz. Note to all of you, the A's are never out of it. They are in the West for chrissakes and they are the smartest team in the West as well.

I agree...
There have been positives:
1. The starting rotation leads the league;
2. The offense probably had the best May in 3 or 4 years;
3. The DL of Kotsay and Bradley led to finding potentially better replacements in Cust and Snelling.
4. The DL of Loaiza led to finding a potential top of the rotation starter in Gaudin;
5. Even Stewart has been a pleasant surprise in my little A's world.
Sure, the bullpen has suffered from the injuries (and it might not get all that better if Street and Duke remain out for any extended period; but, really, what did you expect having to rely on Witasick, Embree, and minor-league callup?).
The Angels will get smoked by the Yanks and Tigers and everything will be right in Athletics Nation. ;-)

Ooops...
the DL of Kotsay and Piazza, I meant.

If you think AN is bad...
Check out the A's board on ESPN.com. There's a reason I stopped going there.
http://boards.espn.go.com/boards/mb/...
During a game, that board is unreadable.

Don't say things like "this isn't our year"
There are still more than 4 damn months left in this season. If everyone would quit taking the same mentality that Eric Chavez takes at the plate with runners on, i.e. no hope, maybe it would become apparent that there is a long long season ahead.
by sprtsnwyn on May 22, 2007 4:24 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
given that this is the A's ...
... I'd say this is perhaps too literal an example of "whistling past the graveyard."
by monkeyball on May 22, 2007 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yea to all who posted above.
I agree that this season is a season to really HOPE. Yeah the injuries are a drag but watching Cust and Johnson blossom and the great SP performances is very heartening. The A's have made runs after the all-star break before. It's a long season...a marathon not a sprint ( the old cliche) and please try to quit BITCHING so much ... to those that have the pessimism problems. Noone likes to listen to incessant whining.

About the pessimism
I think a lot of people on this site really have no idea what it's like to have a bad year. It's been ... what? about eight years since we had a bad team. Several here, particularly our younger members, probably haven't even been watching baseball that long. As a result they never learned that baseball is still fun even if you're not a contender. What about Royals fans, or Devil Ray fans? (Or my sister, who was a die-hard, season-ticket-holding Mariners fan through the late 1980s and early 1990s.) Are those people just stupid to be rooting for loser teams? Can they not have fun being fans too?
League-wide, a team going into a game is going to lose 50% of the time. Approximately 50% of teams are going to have a sub-500 season. Are fans of all those teams supposed to just "wait till next year"? No, you still root for the team because it's fun and they're your guys and that's baseball.
Some day, the A's really will have a dreadful year (which this year is not, by the way). When that happens, sure, we can all say "this team sucks" and it'll be true. But that doesn't mean you stop enjoying the here and now, or stop rooting for a win every day.
