(diary to be named later)
With the recent slew of trades left and right by the A's for (insert player / cash to be determined later), I was curious of the league mandates for such strange ambiguous stipulations in a trade. I mean, typically you have your straight player x for player y trade. But in scenarios where it is (insert player / cash to be determined later), how is it dertemined that Jack Cust is worth only cash considerations, and not say a Daric Barton? Or how is Denforia (who hasn't played one bit), worth someone like McBeth, a wonder prospect in the minors. Does MLB / MLBPA have any stipulations as to who/what amount/etc. has to be settled by what date? Just curious how it works out.

The opposing GM will ask for a group of players,
within a certain caliber, and then the GM of the PTBNL team will give them one of the players they selected.

Is this certain caliber player
determined before or after the two teams get the chance to see how the traded player, in this case Cust? How long do they have to complete the trade?

Cust had something in his contract
That stipulated the Padres trade him for a modest amount of cash if another teams was offering him a spot on their 25 man roster.

"The cost wasn't exactly steep - a modest sum of cash - because Cust had a clause in his contract allowing him to leave if another team offered him a chance to play in the majors. A deal was struck the next day."
I've seen it mentioned in a couple of other articles as well
