How Good is Your Fantasy Baseball Team
I thought just for fun we can talk about our fantasy baseball teams given our enlightened perspective on managing our fantasy baseball rosters.
Alright so Billy Beane HAS the job we all want. Nevertheless, our own abilities to manage a roster and make moves is within our grasp. So what diamonds in the rough, underappreciated or undervalued players have you picked up that have made the difference between your team and their competition.
Here's my roster that you can comment on or compare with yours. But some of the things that might be fun to share are: what has been your best pickup or worst move that you've made thus far this season that's now a a quarter of the way over.
C: Joe Mauer (IR) Picked up Bengie Molina off waivers
1b: Ryan Franklin (IR) picked up Dan Johnson (yeah baby) FA
2b:Orlando Hudson Free agent
3b: Ar. Ramirez
ss: J Rollins
OF: Vernon Wells
OF: Swisher FA (sitting this week)
OF: Jack Cust FA
OF: Matt Holiday off waivers
utility/3b: Mike Lowell FA
SP: Colon, Marquis, Harden (IR), Bonderman (IR), Verlander, Washburn, Sabathia
RP: Accardo, Putz, Valverde
Thus far, after an 0-3 start I'm now 3-3. My worst move was dropping Sheffield but picking up Holiday made up for it big time. How's your season going?

My active Yahoo hitters SUCK lately.
And no, I don't have a bunch of A's (just Swisher). I did have Piazza, but I dropped him when he became my 6th DL guy (I'm going to be patient for Mauer & Kendrick). After being in 2nd or tied for 1st for a couple of weeks (thanks to pitching), I dropped to 8th place in a matter of a few days... :(
I had also started a team in mlb.com's "2007 Open," but it's boring, so I haven't even looked at it for about a month. I don't like having to draft a team's entire pitching staff instead of choosing individual pitchers, and only being able to make lineup changes once a week.

i generally stay away from a's
at first it was because it just stung twice as much if they failed, but now it's more logical.
- injury concerns
- offensive guys don't have much protection in the lineup
- pitchers don't have much run support

being stung twice...
My sister the Giants fan noted the Angels beat the Dodgers Friday.
Me: Shit!
Her: Well, sorry it was an Angels win, but at least they helped my Giants.
Me: Not just that, but Brad Penny was pitching!

How the hell
were you able to pick up Matt Holliday on waivers?

Unbelievable
I thank the idiot who dropped him every day

12 team, H2H Points League
with people from another A's board. I am 4-3 and tied for 2nd in my division.
C - Barrett
1B - Morneau
2B - Kent
3B - Cabrera
SS - Rollins
OF - Beltran, Sheffield, Abreu
UT - Griffey
BN - Pence, Huff, Kendrick*
SP - Felix, Bedard, Schilling, Shields, R.Johnson
BN - Lincecum, Clemens
RP - Rivera, Myers
BN - Benitez, Duke
Whoever is in bold is someone I did not originally draft. Bold+Italic is someone I traded for.
My best Billy Beane move was multi-tiered:
- picked up Weathers and Torres from FA; traded them for Cuddyer (Apr 25)
- picked up Aurilia from FA; traded him along with Maddux (who I drafted) for Nomar (Apr 26)
- picked up Buehrle from FA after his no-hitter
- traded Buehrle, Nomar, Cuddyer for Morneau (May 1)
essentially turned Maddux---> Morneau

Rivera was just dropped in our league
I had the opportunity to get him but his 6+ ERA and 3 saves scared me off. Lincecum is a nice pickup.
Beane would be proud of your transactions...you forgot to mention that this didn't blow budget either!..Gotta keep Wolff happy.

lincecum
yeah i was watching him closely and picked him up right before he got the call to the majors. he's already really hyped and talked about, but imagine if he was in new york and getting the philip hughes kind of talk.
homer bailey (cin) and gallardo (mil) are the other two pitching prospects i'll have my eye on.

Cmon..someon dropped Mariano Rivera?
This league cant be serious. Add him now...the 3 saves just mean a lot mroe are coming. He is healthy, just has struggled. This is Mariano Rivera...Add him now.

He has a starter dominated staff...
...and Joe (hello Jack Cust) Borowski is his only reliever. To his credit he picked up Lincecum and Blanton.
Hey, I'm only charge of my team, he's in the other division.
The competition actually has been pretty good. I thought I'd have a killer team but I lost 2 of my first 3 games by a total of less than 20 pts. Unfortunately, my lineup is set for a week at a time which forces you to really examine the schedule of your players to maximize productivity. I've been screwed a few times due to injuries on my roster, so several spots are taken thereby limiting my manueverability.

What Formats do you find most user friendly?
Having done both Yahoo and CBSSportsline, I really like the data from CBS. MLB and Fox haven't been tried yet.
The feature I look at a lot is the 2 week and 1 week performances plus the matchups. For pitching, CBS will tell which pitchers have 2 starts that week.

I'm in ESPN
and enjoy it a lot. They had some issues early on in the year, but everything is working fine now.
- live scoring
- daily batter v pitcher stats
- hotlinks to rotowire fantasy news/updates on each player
- player results from last 7, 15, and 30 days along with the full 2007 stats, 2006 results, and 2007 projections
- player ranks, average draft spot, % owned systemwide, % droped/added
- customizable display options for stats so you can display only the ones that matter to you
and it's all free this year, yay.

Haha..Holliday on waivers?
Must be the least competitive league ever.

Awesome team but Delmon Young
...hasn't exactly lived up to my hopes. I picked him up for a while and yet found better prodictivity form Josh Hamilton from the Reds. Still, your team is loaded. Colon, Lackey, Haren...wow. Is Zumaya productive yet?

I picked up
JJ hardy
jack Cust
Mike Lowell
John Buck
Sammy Sosa
Jack Hamilton
as Free agents so far helped me out a ton when kendall, Freddy Sanchez, and Corey Patterson couldnt produce.
by 3Chavy3 on May 21, 2007 2:59 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Patterson was interesting
I picked him but he was dropped when Swisher became available. Of course my injury riddled team (Franklin, Mauer, Harden, Bonderman) needed a guy who could play 1st and OF.
by Gerard on May 21, 2007 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah tell me about injuries
Harden
Halladay
Street
Tom Gordon
Josh Hamilton
although I just droped Harden which I hated to do but had to cause I can trust him to be healthy and picked up Jeremy Accardo to get some saves.

14-team AN league
currently second place (47-33-4, though it's a logjam near the top); hitting categories are R, RBI, HR, SB, BA, OPS; pitching are W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP, K/BB. Depth chart as follows:
C: Buck, Doumit
1B: Giambi, Doumit
2B: Kinsler, Kaz Matsui, Easley
SS: Hardy, Peralta, Easley
3B: Blalock (DL), Iwamura (DL), Easley
OF (3): Ordonez, Ramirez, Podsednik (DL), Willits, Hamilton, Jose Guillen, Doumit
Util: Hafner
Util 2: Peralta, Hamilton, Guillen, Doumit
SP: Peavy, Felix, Harden (DL), Verlander, Gaudin, Carmona, Suppan, Hughes (DL), Guthrie, Robertson, McCarthy (acquired yesterday...seems to have gotten his 1 inning starts out of his system)
RP: Rivera, Isringhausen
I could probably use another closer, but aside from that, this team is pretty stacked. Once guys get healthy (in Harden's case, if they get healthy)...watch out. Finally down to 5 guys on the DL now that Felix and Matsui are back.
Best waiver-wire pickups: Hardy (drafted Freddy Sanchez...picked up Hardy when he had maybe one home run), J Hamilton, Peralta, Hughes, Carmona, J Guthrie...I've done well so far considering it's a 14-team league and each roster has space for 28 guys + 2 DL spots.
Worst moves: my later draft picks were pretty bad...Hayden Penn, Seth McClung...but they are long gone by now.

AN league, huh?
So what was the first absurd loyalty pick? My A's league had Harden taken in the 2nd round...ouch
by fadedash on May 22, 2007 10:52 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
heh
My selection of Harden in the early 4th was probably the closest thing...no first-round picks of Scutaro or anything

10-team league
not AN, but again on Yahoo, same categories...best last-place team ever. It's head-to-head (with the same 12 categories as the AN league), but to determine if my complaints that I was getting really unlucky had any merit, my friend/league commish ran through the season stats and determined what the ranks would be if it was a rotisserie format. Indeed, I would be in 4th place. After seeing my team, you'll likely wonder how I'm not in first...at least I do. Yet somehow I'm 26-53-5, embarrassingly bad, lol.
C: V Martinez
1B: Pujols
2B: Easley (this is the one spot that's been a revolving door after I waited too long to draft Kinsler)
SS: Hardy
3B: Lowell
OF: Bonds
OF: Guerrero
OF: Victorino
Util: Thome
Bench: Ramirez
SP: Peavy, Haren, Felix, James Shields, Oliver Perez, Gorzelanny, Bonderman (DL), Gaudin, Blanton
RP: Ray, Borowski, Dempster, Accardo, Soria
No way that team should be 26-53-5, as the rotisserie standings confirm...I've gotten really unlucky with scheduling. Played a guy who basically drafted the entire Yankees' roster the week in April when A-Rod had his best week, for example.
