Open Thread: Game 42 - A's vs. Giants

Odds are, today's going to be a sequel.

But the question is, what kind of sequel? A Bat Boys II, Jerry Bruckheimer, high-production-values, feel-good action flick, or a downbeat, downright scary 363 Days Later horror-fest, with Jack Cust and Dan Johnson as the only two men left alive in a lineup of undead zombies?

Your Major League ERA Leader (with an alphabetic advantage over Jake Peavy) Dan Haren takes the mound for the A's, against the oft-frightening Matt Cain for the Giants.

Still no Bradley; Duchscherer allegedly may be available out of the 'pen tonight. And for those who still despair at Chavvy still hitting so high in the batting order, here's some minor consolation: at least he ain't Happy Pete. And, FWIW, if I were an opposing manager, I'd pitch to Bonds right now before I'd pitch to DJ.

Giants:

Winn CF
Lewis RF
Feliz 3B
Bonds DH
Klesko 1B
Molina C
Sweeney LF
Vizquel SS
Frandsen 2B

A's

Stewart LF
Swisher CF
Chavez 3B
Johnson 1B
Cust DH
Crosby SS
Buck RF
Ellis 2B
Kendall C

Anybody else not getting FSN HD?

I have the standard-def A's FSN telecast and the KTVU HD telecast, but Channel 720 seems to be dead on Comcast Oakland.

A's contract situation for next year....

When Kendall's and Piazza's contracts are up at the end of the year, that means that $16 million gets freed up.        What would you do with that money?

  1.  Pay Milton?
  1.  Re-sign MaEl to a better deal or pick up the option?
  1.  Re-sign JoKe?
  1.  Give any of the following players better deals:  Kielty, Kiko, Marco, Witasick, Duke, Stewart, Melhuse, Snelling, Gaudin, DJ, Big Jack, Kentucky Joe, Travis Buck?
  1.  Re-sign Kendall and Piazza to lower paying deals?

I would:

re-sign MaEl, Gaudin, DJ, Kentucky Joe to long-term deals as a reward (assuming they don't just totally go a$$ up for the rest of the year); give Marco, Kiko, Milton, Duke, Cust, Stewart, Melhuse, Snelling 1 year deals; let everyone else go or keep their present contracts.

Thoughts?

What I do is open the new gameday.

Copy the new Gameday URL. I don't know how to put it in the correct size window, but to get the Classic Gameday, change the first 2007 to 2006.

Example: blahblah.com/mlb/gameday/y2007/gd.html?2007_05_19_sfnmlb_oakmlb_1

To: blahblah.com/mlb/gameday/y2006/gd.html?2007_05_19_sfnmlb_oakmlb_1

Rob over at 6-4-2 also links to Classic Gameday every morning. His opens up in the correct size window.

how has this guy been sitting in the minors...

for so long.  There is nothing that I have seen so far that justifies him sitting in the minors for as long as he has.  He has not only showed a great eye, he's also got great power, he isn't afraid to single, and he isn't afraid to take a walk.  Boy the Padres certainly wouldn't mind having him back.  But too bad baby, he's an A!

Defense and Ks

Cust has been with NL organizations for his entire career except with the A's and Orioles, so his atrocious defensive reputation (and performance, one would assume) scared off those teams from putting him in the lineup.  He's also struck out between 1/3 and 1/4 of his AB in the minors, so scouts would look at that and say a decent batting average is unsustainable unless you hit HRs like Ryan Howard.

Interestingly enough, he did well in 73 AB for the Orioles in 2003, posting a .260/.357/.521 line, but they didn't retain him in the big leagues the next year, sending him back to AAA where he had a subpar performance.  I wonder what the circumstances were for the 2004 O's roster that kept him off the team as a DH ... maybe they just decided Jay Gibbons already was who Cust could be and went with other options in the OF and 1B.

unless he goes off in the next 4 months....

Kendall is going to experience the largest drop in salary of any major leaguer next year.  He'll be making 2 million next year, maybe up to 4 if someone wants to overpay for an aging catcher who has no power,  whose average has been steadily dropping, and a weak throwing arm to boot.  But hey, he's gritty and he can call a good game.  God we are getting ripped off.  At least Kotsay/Loaiza/Piazza are injured.  Kendall is totally healthy and has been abysmal.

Swish must have thought it was a 2-2 count.

The only difference with the 3-2 count I can immediately think of from a hitter's perspective is in knowing that the pitcher is under more pressure to throw a strike (which is fairly significant, I guess).

Is that a photo-shopped A's hat

on Cust's gameday picture? I really think it is y'know.

by OldhamA on May 19, 2007 8:25 PM PDT reply actions

It was a Pads hat for most of last week

...which I kind of liked, just 'cause it might have further PO'd the Pads for letting Cust get away.

He was just being animated in the dugout

on that Crosby double. Shouting 'that's a fair ball!' Macha wouldn't have moved from the bench.

He basically needed pom-poms in the dugout.

Cheering for Crosby's ball to stay fair.

nice to see bobby

consistently coming through!  Another reason Chavvy needs to be dropped to 7th in the lineup

Cust's OBP

Cust started the night with a .481 on base percentage. With 2 walks and a home run in 4 plate appearances tonight I imagine he's over .500. I think both he and D.J. would be 1 and 2 in the league in OBP if they had enough plate appearances to qualify.

OK....IBB to Buck

so they can pitch to the guy who hit a GS off them last night?  Much respect to Buck...but if were Ellis I would be pissed...and determined to make them pay.  Do it Ellie...do it.

Looks like Colby Lewis will be coming to Oakland,

he was held out of his scheduled start for the Rivercats tonight

Not necessarily

If the River Cats stayed on turn inspite of the off day than today was Komine's turn.

If Ellis goes yard...

...can we coax Kline out of the dugout to get tossed for old time's sake?
