Harden Suffers Setback - Shut Down Again
I suspect we'll hear more about this tomorrow, but this blurb was at the tail end of the Yahoo recap of tonight's game...
A's RHP Rich Harden had another setback in his return from a strained right shoulder when the club shut him down for the weekend. Harden has been on the disabled list since April 16.

And Loiaza's knee is tore up
No surgery though, he wants to try and pitch through it.
Lucky us.
Because ELo is so durn effective
The Reds should trade Adam Dunn to the A's for Rich Harden. Why? So they can trade someone who's Dunn for someone's who's done.
Sigh indeed

Harden setback: Geren said Rich Harden, who's been out with a sore shoulder, "won't be on the mound any time soon."
The right-hander had been on a two-days-on, one-day-off throwing program, but when he stretched it out to 120 feet Tuesday, it didn't go well. Geren said Harden probably won't throw the rest of the weekend.

What else is there to say?

60 Day DL
This latest setback raises the possibility that Harden will be moved to the 60 day DL when/if Colby Lewis is brought up to start the game on Tuesday.
he was placed on the DL retroactive to April 16
so a move to the 60-day DL would make him eligible to come off the DL no earlier than June 15...and even the most optimistic (wishful thinkers?) don't expect to see him pitch for the A's before then.
yeah, this really makes the ...
... "strained his shoulder reaching for a ball barehanded" explanation seem much more likely, doesn't it?
Anyone still care to take up the case that the A's front office isn't routinely mendacious with its injury information?
It's one or the other: either they lie routinely, or the medical staff is incompetent at diagnosis and rehabilitation. (Though, of course, it could be both.)
What I still don't get is why they lie so routinely. It's not as if other teams don't have scouts, or if other teams don't have recourse through the Commissioner's Office if Beane were to pawn off an injured player in a trade. There's no competitive advantage to be gained.
not always true
remember when we were trying to trade for mark bellhorn at the deadline and we had bobby crosby dressed so he looked like he was ready to play, even though he had just broken a bone.
also i don't really see what you're saying in this particular case.
Eh, I thought most A's fans
accept that the team isn't exactly honest with regards to injuries.
i still don't understand
what the benefit would be of being more honest. would the players no longer be injured? if so, i'm all for it.
I'm not saying that the A's should be more honest
Just that they're not.
i wasn't implying you had said that
I surrender
Harden has no value as a starter. Any gains from the times he does pitch are lost in starts by Braden and others that were only made because the team deceived itself into thinking Harden would pitch for them throughout the season.
It's the same miserable and lame story every year. I'm guessing he may be done as a starter. I mean how many times do you "try again"? Still, I don't even know if a move to the bullpen automatically reduces injury possibiliies or frequency. Do any of you know about that?
harden question
what do all these injuries do for the amount of time the a's control harden? is it being wasted while he's on the DL or will we have him around until he's 50?
wasted.
we have him through '08, with a club option for '09 and that stays the same even though he's on the DL, as far as I know... I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, though :)
Since Harden was sent to the DL
while he was on the 25 man roster, he will accrue service time.
If he had been sent down to AAA during Spring Training, like Mark Prior for example, then he would not accrue service time.
Someone injured? Where's my pants?

It's now clear
that they have to solve the #5 starter issue and the bullpen problem without any thought of Harden or Loaiza. If Colby Lewis can give them Saarloos-like numbers, that will be fine. If not, the next set of options (Windsor, Komine, Halsey) doesn't look so promising. Beane will have to make a move for the bullpen if Duke can't pitch.
