Putting the DUM in the Daily Link DUMp: 5/18
In the interest of brevity and because I SuCk and am a sandwich or two short of a picnic, I will launch today's DUMp with only one link, in which Billy Beane entertains the thought of adding Rickey Henderson to the September 40-man roster. And because I still do not know how to do box quotes, I will provide an excerpt the old-fashioned way:
"'I'm disappointed about how my career ended,' Henderson told the Chronicle by phone this week. 'I haven't had the time to say, "I'm retiring.' But baseball says, "You're retired." Every other player has had the chance to say they're through. I want to go out and say, "I'm done. I'm happy." Give me a chance to retire.'"
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2874724
"Is this it?"
Yes, I'm afraid it is.
Provide yer own damned links!!!

Wouldnt that push back his Hall of Fame
eligibility to 5 years from that date though? That would be terrible.
by OaktownPower on May 18, 2007 9:39 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I'd accept that for one more chance to see him.
And he would too.
In fact, if Rickey Henderson gets added to the roster for one day, I'll fly down to Oakland to see him play. Put him on the roster for two weeks, I'll be there for the whole damn thing.
A month would stretch me financially, but hot damn, the idea of one more Rickey steal makes me giddy.
by Ozzz on May 18, 2007 9:46 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yea, I wouldnt be ok with that
Seems ridiculous for him to delay his HoF for one day on the roster and in uniform which would really just be for show. As for playing, we would have to be way out of the race for that to happen so I would not be pleased with that option either.
by OaktownPower on May 18, 2007 9:49 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
What are the rules for the HOF? Is it 5 years
after you put in your retirement paperwork, or 5 years since you last played. because as far as I know Rickey still hasn't filed.
by theblackpearl on May 18, 2007 9:53 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I am not sure...
That is why I asked....
Here is the official rule, seems to be me you just don't have to be an active player:
Player shall have ceased to be an active player in the Major Leagues at least five (5) calendar years preceding the election but may be otherwise connected with baseball.
by OaktownPower on May 18, 2007 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Five years after the season which contains
your last game. Currently, Rickey will go into the HoF in 2009. Playing in the game this year, unless some exception is made, would result in Rickey being inducted in 2013.

Well, it's his honor and his choice to make

Why would you care when he goes HoF?
As for him playing, well clearly they won't send him out with the season on the line, but if we're beating someone 8-4 and he goes out to pinch-run in the 9th, I'm all over that.
by Ozzz on May 18, 2007 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That just feels so cheap...
The greatest leadoff man ever pinch running in a game that is essentially over...Why, so he can say he retired as an A?
As for the HoF, never know in life...4 years is a long time and a lot can happen. I would prefer he goes in in 2008 rather than a silly one inning meaningless appearance.

Remember Kotsay? HE can close!
Outfielder Mark Kotsay, on the 60-day disabled list while recovering from March back surgery and currently working out at the club's complex in Phoenix, was given Thursday off. He's slightly ahead of his rehab schedule and might be ready to start a Minor League stint as early as Monday.

Could Billy be holding a grudge against Rickey,
During one of his stays with Oakland, Henderson’s locker was next to Billy Beane’s. After making the team out of spring training, Beane was sent to the minors after a few months. Upon his return, about six weeks later, Henderson looked at Beane and said, "Hey, man, where have you been? Haven’t seen you in awhile."
by F171615 on May 18, 2007 12:16 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Maybe it's a penis thing.
I mean, if they had lockers next to each other, you just know that at some point there was a comparison of Billy's Beane-stalk and Rickey's Benderson.

Speaking of penises
From a Memphis newspaper:
In other news...
H.M. Moore, 41, of Memphis, was standing in line at 10:25 a.m. Thursday outside City Court, Division 2, at 201 Poplar when he started masturbating, according to court records. Moore was arrested and charged with assault and indecent exposure. He remained in jail Friday on a $10,000 bond.

Nobody is talking about Floyd Landis?
It came courtesy of Landis' fellow American Tour de France champion Greg LeMond, who disclosed he had been sexually abused as a child and received a call Wednesday from Landis' manager who threatened to reveal the secret if LeMond showed up to testify.
Shortly after LeMond dropped those bombshells, the manager, Will Geoghegan, walked up to LeMond, apologized and admitted he made the call, LeMond said. Which led to "You're fired" — the message Landis attorney Maurice Suh gave to Geoghegan while they were still standing in the hearing room.
LeMond described receiving a call Wednesday evening from someone who claimed to be his uncle. He said he later traced the call to Geoghegan's cell phone.
"He said, 'I'll be there tomorrow and we can talk about how we used to' perform a sexual act," LeMond said of the phone call. "I thought this was intimidation to keep me from coming here."
Maybe I should just hang out at Podium Cafe.
