Open Thread: Game 39 - A's vs. Royals (cont.)
The A's makeshift lineup had us all worried the team could end up being part of history tonight, with Odalis Perez (of all people) posting five no-hit innings. Even more improbable than a Perez no-no? The following phrase: Jason Kendall, hitting machine. Kendall broke up the no-hit bid in the 6th with a leadoff double, and knocked in two with a single in the 7th, tying the game at 2-2. Meanwhile Blanton is breezing through the Royals lineup after a shaky first. We return you to the action tied 2-2 at the top of the 8th. Go A's!

Blanton: 114 pitches
In with 2 on base. Shades of Grady Little? :-/
Hasn't Marshall pitched like 300 innings
this year? Is there something in his contract that says he is the one to go to whenever there's a call to the pen?
Blanton for complete game
and hope to hell we score now or next inning so he doesn't have to pitch in the tenth.
That's one way
I'd like to see Connor Robertson and I actually DO like Jay Marshall.
Wash to the DL
Ron Washington pulled up with a hamstring injury while running out to protest a call.
He claims he won't go on the DL.

"Awwww... he's so cute!" re: Cust. "Look at those thighs!"
I'm quoting. :-/
RayFo actually said
"thunder thighs" on the radio last week.
That's the thing about Cust, he can't hit a
curve, but his eye is so good, he won't swing at a bad curve, and eventually a pitcher will have to throw a fastball, unless they are very good.

Of course, if he took the AL lead, I'd like that better.

Did anyone notice Swisher swearing?
When Cust was coming to the dugout, Swisher clearly said, "Something, something, that Shit, Motherfucker." I went back several times. Shit and motherfucker were clearly audiable. Hilarious, but I hope this doesn't lead to any type of delay.

I actually do that at the park sometimes in later innings for our players that aren't hitting. It doesn't help them, but it makes me feel better. And it makes the people who are sitting near me move away, which is also nice.

it's unbelievable how bad this bullpen is.
by larrysgurl on May 16, 2007 9:33 PM PDT reply actions
So what was wrong with Robertson????
They didn't want to use a "closer" because he might blow it???
Oh! Good thinking!
by One won lost won on May 16, 2007 9:33 PM PDT reply actions
That's exactly my concern
As I see it, the Kansas City Royals are basically a bridge between AAA and the majors as it is, so they would be the best team to give a guy some experience against.
Relax! Kiko is trying prove Joe Morgan's theory
about W's as the most important stat for pitchers by taking one one away from Joe B.
I was thinking about how that evens out
I guess that means Kennedy will win some 5 inning 4 run games now?
C'mon, Embree
F with DeJesus
What the world needs now...
if love, sweet love.... It's the only thing that there's just too little of... well, that and reliable pitchers and hits with RISP.
And major league-ready baseball players
something has to be done about this bullpen
If there's a chance that street could miss over a month, they are absolutely screwed.

Thinking positively
The bottom of the 9th will feature the following A's mashers:
- Scutaro
- Bocachica
- Kendall
Kendall just needs a triple and a home run to hit for the cycle tonight.
Well, the Bullpen of Doom...
has reared its ugly head! 2 days into the HS->DL and 2 blown saves. Against the Royals! Not only can they not get three outs in the ninth, this shows that the bullpen can't come in any inning. Starters have to go nine. Its the only way to win now...
where the hell is Yabu??

Look, let's get this fucking straight
Duke and Calero have thrown bad pitch after bad pitch this year. I'm not even talking about results. I'm just saying their pitches are awful, eminently hittable. So even if Buck catches that ball, I'd still say Calero pitched badly, that he was lucky. And it's been the same story for Duke almost all year. He doesn't throw good pitches.
So could we (the management) just stop pretending that either of these guys are any good. I mean they both may be good again, but right now they're are both just awful.
So, yes, for god's sake, use someone else. It's not complicated. These roles shouldn't be etched in stone after 40 games. We've seen enough.
because that makes too much sense.

Positives: Blanton 8IP, 2ER, 7K, 2BB-7 straight SO innings. Cust with a clutch HR, wish he could have gotten a hit with the basesloaded though.
Neg: 1 hit by Perez, Blown save!, Loss, DJ's streak is over :(
this loss is on LARRY DAVIS, who is a
big fat tie-dyed piece of sh*t. He and Cocknell are not qualified to be ushers at these games. They should both have to travel to India at their own expense so the yogis can piss on their heads. Their mockery and dismissal of alternative treatments and regimens out of hand, especially those from foreign lands (even as they watched Zito do a strict yoga-based program and never miss a start in 7 years) smacks of a particularly elitist strain of racism to me. Further, I repeat my assertion, made countless times, that having a mordantly overweight trainer is like having a crackhead as your personal financial advisor. These clowns, about as qualified to be conditioning staff in the 21st century as I am to drive in NASCAR, are in no small way responsible for losses like this due to their complete lack of effective oversight of our players' (in this case our bullpen pitchers') health.
If these utterly intransigent morons aren't dismissed soon we will quickly be residing in last place. Anyone who defends them in any respect is either friends with them or categorically insane. The only thing more stunning than the fact that these f*ckwads are still employed even as their work becomes more and more awful and ineffective is that this team, so progressive and cutting edge in so many realms of franchise management and strategy, continues to employ trainers and conditioning staff whose attitudes and preferences seem to date back to the time just before the game of baseball was ever invented, i.e. sometime in the mid-19th century.
That is all.

on a lighter note
Blake survives..
Wow, that was bad.
Now, I still had fun at the game because I went with a buddy, and going to baseball games with a friend is always fun (latest wrinkle: selective All-Star voting. I had the all funny name ballot, the all crappy players ballot, and the all ugly ballot. Cristian Guzman was on both of the latter). But I think that was about the worst performance I've ever seen by the A's -- and I've been a fan since 1981. Not only did Odalis Perez, of the 6.23 ERA, almost no-hit us, but the only reason we even ended up scoring at all was because of a gift dropped pop-up from a really really bad team (that still didn't look so bad against us). Completely anemic offense, did not look threatening at all.
Of course, Blanton settled down and pitched great after the first inning, so props to him; Kendall of all people actually hit the ball (although to be frank his double only got by the outfielders because they were playing so shallow in the first place -- hey, waitaminute, very clever Kendall! Hit like crap all year to trick the OFers into playing shallow!); and Cust's homer right after getting a taste of chin music was very cool. So what happens? The bullpen immediately coughs it up, not just giving up the tie but the winning run as well. Just awful.
Okay, caveat time. Yeah, that was a mostly AAA lineup; our closer's on the DL; and Chavez was getting his first day off all year. But where's the pride? Where's the fire? This is freakin Kansas City, and they made us look bad in our own park.
Aarrrgh. That said, LET'S GO OAKLAND!!!! LOVE THE ATHLETICS! DESTROY KC TODAY!
