Well Braden lost another game today which he pitched o.k. but was let down by the defense (why is Kendall playing again?). All the scouting reports when he was brought up raved about his plus screwball that got big outs. But for some reason that I have yet to find out, Curt Young has asked him not to use the mighty screwball and he has been pitching with just 3 pitches which I assume is a fastball, curveball and change-up. Now there could be some good reason for this, but I would think if he was able to use all his pitches and especially the one that is supossed to be his superior pitch, he might have more success.
Wow how about the first week Jack Cust has had. I can not remember a better first week in an A's uniform. Thank the stars Piazza got unlucky so we could go get Jack and give him his chance. If Cust stays even mildly hot he has to play over Piazza.
I'm still mad at the A's for not resigning Big Frank. Why do we always let guys go who produce in the playoffs? Lets see, he leads us to the first playoff series win in over a decade and we let him slip away. Against the Twins he had an 1.700 OPS, won a game or two by himself, is so intimidating that he protects two guys in front of him and was such a confidence giving presence in the clubhouse that we acually WON. Its not like we have many guys produce for us when we get there.
We are paying Piazza about the same per year as Toronto is paying Frank. I know his 4 HR and 15RBI are not all that so far this year but remember, he hit 20 HR and 68 RBI in 72 games after the All-Star game last year. Thats about all we can expect out of Piazza in a full year when healthy.
How much is "calling a good game" worth? Please, Please, Please start another catcher. Kendell is so weak. Kendell has hit ONE double and NO HR in over 115 AB. Trade for someone. Play Melhuse. Play Piazza when healthy. Call up Suzuki or Brown or some Rookie Ball catcher. Bat him ninth and pinch hit in the third. Put him on the 60 day DL with "maximum weakling syndrum" and let him coach his replacement on "calling a good game".
