Not Ready for Prime time
Now that we know Braden isn't quite ready for prime time, it's really sad the A's put Walker up for assignment. In retrospect, why didn't Geren just give the ball to Lenny DiNardo?
Sigh.

He had 144 ML AB's
Pretty small sample size to say a guy can't hit major league pitching. In 73 AB's with the Orioles in 03 he had a 878 OPS. I remember seeing him them (I live in MD) liked him and have followed him ever since.

I just want to say
that, with all of the troubling injuries plaguing our squad, it's REALLY GREAT to have an uplifting story like Cust's to rally around. The other day I posted a nasty diatribe about Milton Bradley, which I still feel guilty about, all because I was so certain we were gonna tank under the strain of so many injuries. Now, I probably should have just kept my mouth shut and emphasized the great work our starting rotation did and continues to do, but I just couldn't shake the feeling that our starters success was being largely squandered by the paltry offensive numbers our replacement squad was posting. Now, as ridiculous as it sounds, I feel like I can breathe a little easier because of the production of Jack Cust and Dan Johnson. I know it's fleeting. I know it's not indicative of anything meaningful, but it allows me to maintain the illusory impression that the Oakland A's are somehow charmed, and that our run of competitiveness is not going to end this season. Yeah...... I'm done pontificating.

Also we know how other AL West teams felt when..

Well, you can't win all of them...
Meanwhile, Texas has yet to beat the Angels this year. Now we know how LAA felt last year with Sea and us.
Bullpen not is still showing signs of weakness. Braden is just not ready.
Harden needs to come back soon if we are going to catch those guys.

Seattle hasn't beaten the Angels either
Seattle schedule and results shows that. It's going to be a long season if the other AL-West teams cannot beat the Halos. :( Let's hope that is just early season results and not a permanent trend.

Seattle is not too good on the road...
but Texas is at home so they have no excuse!

Right Now ..
.. it reminds me of 2005 when Texas could not beat the Angels to save their life! Home or road, Texas is going to have to get some better outings out of their pitchers, and play better defense, - I hope we not looking at 17-2, 18-1, or {gulp} 19-0 Angels vs Texas this year! If that happens it will be last year in reverse and we likely lose the division even if we end up doing better against non-division opponents. :(
by Randy Bell on May 12, 2007 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also ..
To date Seattle has beaten us twice on the road and twice at home. They got swept by the Angels. Texas beat us twice in Arlington but has lost every game to LAA. So there's a five game swing right there, with Texas/Seattle combining to beat us five times to the Halos nothing. If Seattle and Texas cannot start beating the Angels at least 20 or 30 percent of the matchups {preferably more}, we could lose the division even if we greatly outdo the Angels against non-division opponents. :( Maybe that is the way the AL-West has seen us, {especially earlier this decade) - beating up on divisional opponents - but right now it is the Halos doing that ..
by Randy Bell on May 12, 2007 5:38 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Correction:
"five game" should read "six game" swing within the division: the six games we've lost to Texas/Seattle compared to the zero games LAA has lost to them. :(
