Open Game Thread: Game 8 - A's vs. White Sox
Ah, the home opener. Baseball returns to the sweet green grass of the Coliseum for the first time since October (the preseason stuff doesn't count). And who better to open the season at home than Rich Harden who is sporting a big fat goose egg for an ERA and a 1-0 record. You've got to love the early season because you get to see things like a 63.00 ERA. That's where Jose Contreras ERA stands right now.
While it's true that Contreras will likely lower that into at least the 20s tonight, he does have an ERA over seven against the A's in five starts over the past three years.
The A's send out this lineup to take on Contreras and the White Sox:
Kendall
Stewart
Bradley
Piazza
Chavez
Swisher
Crosby
Buck
Ellis
I still don't like Kendall in the leadoff spot any more, but the A's don't really have a traditional leadoff hitter right now. I respect what he does behind the dish in calling a game and whatnot, but if he isn't getting on base, he does nothing for our team.
King Richard faces the following White Sox lineup:
Podsednik
Erstad
Konerko
Thome
Dye
Crede
Pierzynski
Cintron
Uribe
How is it that I still can't stomach the mere sight of that punk ass Pierzynski? It's been years since he yelled boo-yah in Greg Myers face and I still hold a grudge. Man, I think I need to grow up or something. Oh and it's gonna be weird to see Erstad in something other than obnoxious red (you know the bright red that borders on nearly orange that those folks from So Cal thinks looks stylish).
LET'S GO A'S!!!!!! Win that home opener!

Sorry this is going up so late

You can try Tor...
...or some other anonymizing rerouter.
by GreenNGoldSooner on Apr 9, 2007 7:38 PM PDT up reply actions
Use a proxy server
I got this off of AN:
go to a site like www.publicproxyservers.com or just google "public proxy servers" and go down the list of the anonymous ones.
go to tools ---> internet options ---> lan settings --> set up proxy or something like that order for Internet Explorer.
for Firefox, go tools --> options ---> network tab ---> settings ---> manual proxy
copy and paste the public proxy and port in there and try it out. its trial and error til you find one that works smoothly or at all. it will probably take you 15-20 minutes, so do so before the game.
Good Luck. Sorry for delayed response.

I think we've had the A's telecast

4 games of Phys and Hud, and now 1 of the bizarre, surreal, I'm-not-even-trying-to-describe-what's-happening-on-the-field babblings of Hawk Harrelson.
Another night of "mute" for me.
Hawk

These are some of the few A's games that I get to see on tv here in Chicago. And Hawk Harrelson is taking three days off. yesssss......
I am going to pretend

Is there a point at which,
Swisher moves ahead of Chavez in the line up or is Swisher "protecting" Chavez? Seems like we need to get Swisher higher in the order.
Couldn't agree more.
Other teams still think Chavez can hit, so moving him behind Swisher would work!
LET'S GO OAK-LAND!

I wonder if Contreras
has a "Zito ump" problem -- if the ump is calling sinkers that nearly bounce for strikes, he can dominate (kind of like Zito with curves that start above the shoulders). If those are called balls, it's a long night for him.

Don't you guys ever learn anything...
the A's only score after the 6th!
at the least...
the warriors are up 14. And the Clippers lost earlier today. The W's may make the playoffs yet.
The top of lineup is killing us.
.161, .188, .222 batting averages (with OBP not much higher) are really doing this offense in. I mean, I expect all three to turn it around as its still very early, but if you're looking for an early season goat for the offense there it is.
It's okay
The offense is just trying to keep Joe Morgan happy. If we did anything fancy like score more than one run at a time or hit home runs, it wouldn't be real baseball.

No.
You usually get the home team... unless the home team isn't on FSN, then you get the away teams. Like tonight. A's on Action 36, we get CWS. Or, if both teams are on local channels, you're screwed. There are a few teams (I know the Padres) that are NEVER on EI because of their television deal with their local cable.

but does anyone know if I can call Time Warner and get a really really basic subscription (Im looking for super cheap here) and get the EI package that way? Im trying to get Cable but only for EI...I dont watch TV otherwise
by Amnesiac727 on Apr 9, 2007 8:47 PM PDT reply actions
you'll have to get digital cable at least...
Where do you live?
It looks like $44.95 is the cheapest rate.
You have to buy some kind of digital monthly service, and the cheapest one for Corona, and probably most of Riverside Co. is $44.95.
Here is the home page for Southern California Time Warner cable. Here is the pricing guide for Corona.
Tough break if you don't already get cable. Hope you got roommates...
You know what mlb.tv
should do more? Cut back in late. That's been loads of fun.
So now that pitch is a ball again?
im sick of bad hitting
and its early april, bad sign for me

I demand new thread mojo.
Good God, Chavvy
I don't even care what you do this at bat (lie), but would you quit flailing at nonsense like that? Christ.
Good to see Chavez pulling the ball like that
that was an excelleng AB.
Easy on the prunes!

by OAKobsession on Apr 9, 2007 8:50 PM PDT reply actions
let him finish it :D
Its been nearly two years...
since a team lost a game on a Scott Podsednik home run. How embarrassing...
something cool
is happening in San Diego.
MATT CAIN NO HIITTER THROUGH 6!
trying to curse him...
haha sorry
i assumed there werent any giants fans in here....

Awful awful awful call
DP in order!
NO way was that a strike
that was a fucking strike??
Oh for god's sake
This is just ridiculous. That ball was 5 inches inside and almost bounced!
Would anyone else
like to see Geren rip the ump a new one and get tossed?
I think not having a homer
Is starting to get to Swisher. He seems too often to be swinging out of his shoes.
But that second strike was the most ungodly strike call I've seen in my life.
Even on gamday the strike zone looks jacked up.
Something amazing is happening...
at Oracle...
Did Zito get a hit?
lets go oakland!!!

I'm impressed that Cros took that 1-2 pitch
ME TOO!! Seriously!
Crosby and Ellis have similar stances
Shocked cros didn't swing at that
nice eye kid
Though with a strikezone this random...
...deciding what to take is largely a matter of pressing your luck.

Good AB by Croz
I rarely say this...
...but that was a hell of an AB by Cros
Just a WONDERFUL at-bat from Crosby
we need a hit rookie
go for it!!
Wow, Crosby looks good at the plate
Impressed with the discipline and he was taking good hacks, not out of control
This is one of those important situations
Where we could use a double, or a homer, or, yknow, any hit, but, typically, we seem to just ground or pop out.
Not saying that'll happen. Just, yknow, observing.
Okay, THAT was a strike
C'mon Buck
I can't watch - too stressful
And it's only game 7
Don't sweat it, nothing happened.
Hmm, Calero is up
I guess Duke may be coming in ;)
Maybe they'll score after the 7th...
Just a little later
And that'd have been the one.
And on that note...
it's midnight here, and I'm going to bed. Let's do this again tomorrow!
Except with a few more runs.
Goodnight!
You'll miss another classic dominating performance by Jay Marshall, followed by an exciting comeback...

Khalil Green just got a leadoff double...
...off of Cain.
Bye-bye, no no.
by GreenNGoldSooner on Apr 9, 2007 9:01 PM PDT reply actions
Yep
You'll fit right in with this team, Buck.
I wish he would copy Piazza
and not Swisher.
No more no hit...
another embarrassingly low scoring game.
Dammit knew that splitter was coming
Buck gave it a good try though. Hopefully he'll be able to lay off the strike out pitch with some experience.
Contreras has pulled what's known as
a "Kennedy"--good line, medium performance. Grrr...
Marshall is due to get hit hard...
hopefully not.
Why all the pessimism?
Is it magical?
this thread is bad for offense
who wants to test the mojo of the Ziegler post?
by OAKobsession on Apr 9, 2007 9:03 PM PDT reply actions
I'm there...
come elephants!
Whee! Let's go!
Jay Marshall is fun
Also, if this offense is gonna sputter all night, hell with it, I'm not gonna worry too much. 8th game of the season.
Go Warriors.
I hear Saint and Duke
yet I have not seen Saint or Duke in awhile.
Where did they go?
Podsednik is really dragging down
my HACKING MASS team tonight. Thanks to A's pitching.
Peter Happy
just struck out to end the game for the jints
