Open Thread: Game 4 - A's at Anaheim
The A's and Chad Gaudin (Nico, you get your wish) take on the undefeated Angels and Joe Saunders. Saunders has started two games in his career against Oakland and has an 8.22 career ERA. Righties have a .752 OPS against Saunders and lefties have a .678 OPS against. You know what that means? It means Klown Power time!
Here is the A's lineup:
Kendall
Stewart
Bradley
Piazza
Chavez
Swisher
Kielty
Ellis
Scutaro
Gaudin has started a grand total of 10 games. He's got an 8.42 ERA as a starter and we all know that he has an issue with walking batters. Thankfully, the Angels aren't exactly known as a patient team so perhaps that will work to Gaudin's advantage tonight.
The Angels lineup he faces looks like this:
Matthews
Cabrera
Guerrero
Anderson
Kotchman
Kendrick
Izturis
Molina
Willits
This is the first of a four game set where the pitching matchups don't look good for the A's.
LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!

The girls always do, right?
I should be in SoCal, I have people up the yin-yang down there, never a problem to stay for weeks.
I need to see an oil well again. Anaheim might even be fun. Oh well, here comes the TV, sheesh.

Well finish the rip in my ass!
Those thieving capitalist bastards, I pay a fortune every month just to see baseball!
Have a great night, everyone. Man I am so tired of getting fucked in American sport: teams leave, players leave, stadiums are ruined, ownership is infantile, prices are outrageous, television coverage terrible, radio lag sickening.
Ya well, fuck you to, sumbitches. Time to go work out, I got lots better things to do than this.
I'll wash a car to the radio
I worked my ass off today, I earned a TV game.
I did. The country has gone to the dogs, I swear to god.
I am confused.
Last year FSN+ was on channel 33. and the link Zonis posted on the DLD says that it is too but ... it's showing WGN on my TV.
you gotta sign up for one of their packages
the lowest is $14.95 for 1 month -- w/ a credit card, and then cancel within 5 days so they don't actually charge you.
...
I don't trust MLB enough to do that. They are very hard to cancel with, and I can see them forcing me to pay the entire year while attempting to cancel it.
See this article: http://www.pcworld.com/printable/art...
I hope you're wrong, but fear your right.
Just FTR
I had a perfectly easy experience canceling MLB.tv at the end of last season. I had set up my account to bill me at the beginning of each month, and they charged me at the end of the season for the extra month, which I think allowed you to watch AFL games and all postseason games (after the fact).
I sent them an email, they responded within hours, and my account was credited some two days later. Wasn't a big hassle.
But I think I've heard that you can't watch the A's if you live in Reno, which doesn't bode well for the rest of NoCal.
Man
I forgot how much I hate the Angels.
Joe Saunders is disgusting.
Grrr...
I hate Angels announcers. They can't get anything right.
Hey, no problem with TV/radio delay today
BECAUSE I CAN'T WATCH ON TV. Un-be-f***ing-lievable.

Go Chad!
Who are they playing, Zambia?
I think Madagascar.
Nice play Croz.
I mean Scutaro... right?
I'm so excited
Gaudin starting. It's all I've ever wanted.

Any reason for Crosby not playing?

That'll do, pig. That'll do.

nice pitching to Vlad
the A's do pitch relatively well to him. On the other hand, I want to see how Gaudin handles Garrett Anderson.
Never homered in Anaheim?
Why did we sign him again?
Can't Watch the A's
But I can take pleasure from watching the Padres take a 2-0 lead over the Giants in the first.

No, Lasorda does not pay for anything.

That would've been a lead-off single
with Frank.
Sweet rip, Piazza.
We need hits!!!
C'mon chavvy!
Damn those telegraphing powers of AN.
That was not a good AB by Chavez

Is the Angels' radar gun metric?
There's no way Saunders is throwing 92 m.p.h.

Man, two strikeouts looking
on fastballs pretty much down the middle.
Saunders' breaking stuff doesn't seem so great that you should get fooled by his fastball.

Guh
Waste of baserunners. Shouldnt be swinging at a 2-0 pitch in this situation.
Where is Crosby everyone?
Not that I am over concerned, I got my beloved Scooter back, but I have not heard anything...
Scheduled day off
Geren wants to make sure his back doesn't get overworked.
Casey Kotchman
Might wind up being a good hitter after all.
How does he miss a year and come back and hit?
How does Gaudin look so far?
Pretty much like this

Almost out of it...c'mon Chad....
OUT!
Payton would have dived for it
and missed, sending the game into extras so that Marco could smack Rodriguez around.
That was huge!!!
YEAH
Great throw Shannon. Great tag Jason.
WHY I LOVE SHANNON STEWART...AN ESSAY BY ME
WHAT A THROW!!!!! WE HAVE A DANGEROUS OUTFIELD BABY!!!!!!! WELCOME TO OAKTOWN SHANNON!
Hope Gaudin starts to get ahead of hitters
He's going to get burned against the top of the Halos lineup
Yeah, first time was lucky i think....

I do, that was all Kendall right there...
Kotchman is not the speediest big man either.

This is great! Not on my TV Great, but Great
The throw beat Kotchman by a mile, but Stewart did a prayer throw and it was pretty far off line. Kendall dove and caught him right before he got to the plate.

sorry, I'm on standard cable
I'm a lowly analog guy.
It's usually 77, but theyre still showing infomercials.
I'm really glad Stewart threw Kotchman out
but for those of you not watching, that was not a good throw. It was way over the cutoff man's head, and far enough up the 3rd base line that Kendall caught it on the 3B side of the right-handed batter's box.
A good throw would've had Kotchman by 20 feet. A reasonably fast runner would have scored.
Ok Bradley...
don't do what you did earlier...
Shannon Stewart
Is a lovely, lovely human being.
"Dice-k"
I hate that nickname. Please make them stop saying it.

"No. It's Oakland."
Aw awww
Awwww
That was actually a very good pitch
by Saunders. Perfect changeup.
Saunders is good against leftys...
and Piazza.
Is Chavez going to decide soon
that his new stance slows his bat down?
Glad I'm not the only one
Who noticed this.
It would also serve him well to stand a little closer to the plate, he whiffs and gets caught looking at so many pitches low and away because he's so damn far away from em.

If someone did this against us
I'd be ready to smash something. Check swings, bloopers...but I'll take it.
....For those of us not watching,
what just happened?
"No. It's Oakland."
Kielty just K'd with the bases juiced...
before that, Swish checked his swing and chopped a ball behind the mound, no play.
Ha! Awesome.
It was the Swisher single that puzzled me.
"No. It's Oakland."
Check swing chop off the plate
bounced all the way over the mound, plopped down about 80 feet from the plate sort of to the right of 2nd, infield single by Swisher.
Then, Booby K'd on a 1-2 changeup (not as good as the ball that Piazza K'd on, but still a pretty good pitch).
Blech
Weak at bat.
But I guess that's just the A's with RISP for ya.
Saunders threw good pitches to him
The slider for strike one and the changeup to put him away were excellent. Kielty did foul off a fastball, but it was tailing in so it wasn't too fat a pitch.
Think happy thoughts...
please?
3rd inning Chad!
Wow...Colonel has already

Mickey Fricken' Hatcher
God, I hated that guy when he played for the Twins.
And I don't like him any more now.
Imagine Eric Byrnes
without a shred of talent or athletic ability. That was Hatcher. And he always killed the A's.
Among Mickey, Billy, and Teri,
the latter is the only Hatcher I like.
If we can make it through 5 with the lead, I say get the studs ready (Duke, Calero, Street, with a side of Embree) and go for the jugular.
Not enough grit to play the field.

Opposite numbers 57 v. 75.
And Gaudin is doing is opposite impression of Z by throwing 1st pitch strikes....
Anyone just see the guy

Didn't you hear?
The real Gaudin is stuffed in a locker in Seattle. This is a drunken Felix Hernandez. Geren lured him onto the flight with candy.
"No. It's Oakland."

There's a secret message about it written under
K-Rod's cap. Just use your A's decoder ring.
"No. It's Oakland."
Those of you who are watching on TV.
HOW does Gaudin's stuff look? Is he getting a lot of movement? What kind of pitches is he throwing? Is he mixing it up?
by BruceBochte on Apr 5, 2007 8:06 PM PDT reply actions
Movements strong
Velocity's strong.
The difference between this start and most of last year is that he's exhibiting acceptable command, and thus not walking people.

That's helpful.
Except now that I see that he's hanging a few of those sliders to Vlad and Anderson.
by BruceBochte on Apr 5, 2007 8:20 PM PDT up reply actions
Lots of sliders for strikes.
...and one for a homer
...no, wait, make that two
If Gaudin can put up 6 strong innings
it puts Kennedy on notice. I think that's a good thing. He knows he has to perform to hold onto the #5 spot.
That's assuming Loiaza
ever gets back from his unoffical, ultra secret suspension.
Hudler now explaining
that Kendall "is just a gamer."
Which is evidently relevant to watching Kendall take two pitches for strikes and then line softly to SS.
Is he contractually obligated to blurt that crap out when he can't think of anything else to say?
I just say "Monkey" when all else fails.
Why can't he?
I dunno--when Kendall hit that,
I thought it was gone.
Key inning coming up--
Last time through the heart of the order for the Chadster.
Pitch over the middle of the plate
+ Vlad Guerrero = bad results.
If there's a reason to throw Vlad
a first pitch strike, I'm forgetting what it is. :-(
so you don't have to waste your time
throwing a 2nd pitch?
keep it together chaddy
That hurts me.
But if we can get past this with only that happening, I'll be damn proud of Chadtastic.
"No. It's Oakland."
Not cool.
I have forgotten how my blood
pressure spikes and profanities fly out of my mouth, disturbing the cat, listening to the Angels announcers call a home run or big play for them.

He's starting
To leave them over the plate more and more.
Crap
He hung that slider. He could be getting tired. And I'd like him to start crowding hitters with his fastball more -- Vlad and Anderson were leaning out over the plate.
Well duh...
the Angels aren't exactly a "Green" team you know.
Speaking of which...
what's the opposite?
The 2-2 pitch to Kotchman
was a strike. I guess the ump called it low.
Yep
and not throwing the fasball inside enough. You can get away with a slider that breaks over the center of the plate if the hitter thinks it's a fastball at his elbow.
Oh, Chad...
Remember when your ERA was 0.00?
Yeah. That was neat.
"No. It's Oakland."
It'll be alright
It's Chad's first start in quite some time, and he'll just have to get through the bottom of the order in the next inning. 5 innings, 2 runs would be nothing to scoff at.
Chaddy won't be pitching to Vlad

What I'm encouraged about
is that I'd rather Gaudin occasionally get hit than for him to walk guys. If he can get through 5 innings with 2 runs, it's a great start for someone who hasn't been stretched out as a starter.
Yes
If Gaudin learns to throw strikes consistently, everything else will fall into place for him. I'm particularly glad he didn't start walking people after the 2nd homer.
