Opening Day picture diary

Mariners blogizens don't seem to enjoy picture threads as much as AN folks do, and let's face it, A's players are cuter than Mariners players, so I figured I'd drop in here and share some of the pictures I took of your green and gold guys at Opening Day today at Safeco.

Seriously, I was almost worried the game would go on 0-0 forever for a while there.  Felix really was just on fire though, and Danny Haren had that one bad inning, and that was really it.  I like that Jay Marshall guy though -- sidearm/submarine lefties are so rare!  Seeing Travis Buck's debut was pretty exciting too.  He seems to fit in with the team just fine, hairstyle-wise at least.

I'm sure y'all will go on to win the rest of the Mariners-A's games, unless we somehow manage to dispel the Cupcakes Curse tomorrow.  I guess we'll see.

Anyway!

Just saw a comment online about high socks

Apparently the idea of knee-pants (the pants that came down just over your knees with socks travelling from your knees to your shoes) was originated in the 19th century to economize on clothes-buying for the boys.  You could buy over-long "knee pants", and keep "accordianing out length" as the boy grew.  I guess the same idea would economize on athletic uniforms:  as long as all players were within, say 5'2" and 6'2", they could all wear the same "knee pants", with the short guys having a bit more "bunching" between waist and knees, but otherwise...."One Size Fits All".

Little known fact

Back in the 19th century, players used to just leave their pants out on the field when they went into the dugout to get their turn at bat.

The Chavez/Ichiro pic is my fav

I guess I love how two players, on two competing teams, from two totally different cultures, can enjoy something within a game together like that. It's, like, the best of the human spirit, or something. It goes to show: we're all the same on the inside.

That's how I see it, anyway.

Actually, it's my favorite too

but I couldn't really give one good reason why, mostly a combination of things, none nearly as good as yours.

Like, "Wow, that really sucked, but Chavvy's still laughing about it," (it was right after the second Bones error) or "I bet they are talking about their collections of golden gloves," or "Wow!  Ichiro is smiling!", or "Huh, did Chavez steal Swisher's 'Making Out In Japanese' book and is trying some moves on Ichiro?"

those are amazing photos!

Just curious -- which camera do you use?

I like how the photos of Ellis make it seem he's around the same height as Crosby and Buck. Having shook Ellis' hand and spoken with him I know that he is alot shorter than his official 5' 10"...

by OaklandSi on Apr 3, 2007 8:18 AM PDT reply actions

Nikon D50 dSLR

I got it last August, and my first weekend of shooting pictures was a sunny set of games against the A's back then too.  They're just a lot of fun to photograph, moreso than any other team in the league as far as I can tell.

I actually still don't have any decent lenses for it -- my zoom is a 70-300G 4-5.6, which means I pretty much depend on sunlight and proximity.  What happened at the Opening Day game is that they actually rolled back the roof for the first half of it, then put the roof back on once it started getting dark and cloudy and ominous.

As for Ellis, that's actually entirely unintentional, but you're right.  I think it's that I tended to catch him at angles where he's either standing closer to me or further away from me than other players and both ways make his height look different.

the NCT started working for me last night too, but only sporadically.  I guess I'll just add it to the bug list.

(For anyone who cares, this regards the new AN feature of "One New Comment by mikeA" in the bottom right browser window corner, and whether it will work in Firefox as it does in IE.  The answer is:  if it feels like it.
