A's acquire Denorfia
Don't know if this has been mentioned yet...
Athletics acquired outfielder Chris Denorfia from the Reds for two players to be named and cash.
Denorfia, 26, will miss the rest of 2007 following Tommy John surgery, but he should come in real handy in 2008 as a fourth outfielder. The right-handed hitter had lines of .317/.391/.526 and .349/.409/.484 in the minors the last two years. He can play an adequate center field and he's above average in the corners. The Reds thought they didn't need him following Josh Hamilton's emergence, but as long as they're counting on Ken Griffey Jr., they're always going to need quality reserve outfielders.

the new trend will be
getting players that actually get off the DL. Buy low sell healthy is in.

HUH?
Is this the new market inefficiency to exploit?
Acquire players that are injured/not able to play with the anticipation that they will be available next season?
Billy really is planning ahead.

is that a joke?
they will be named later.

what's your problem?
they will be named later....but there may already be an idea of who will be named.
and in any event, I did write "I wonder who..."

PTBNL
There's usually a list that both teams agree can be choosen from, otherwise you'll be fighting later on when you make the choice. If there's only one player on the list and even sometimes when there's not, it's usually a money or player deal. Also, there's usually a time frame to select. Though they seldom ever post the list or time frame. Your question wasn't dumb at all.

Good move
It will depend on who we're giving up of course, but we're getting 6 years of an outfielder who will be entering his prime. He can play all three OF spots, making him a very good addition to next year's team. If we can move Kotsay for something of even a bit of value, we can go with Buck/Denorfia/Swisher from LF-RF next year. Denorfia is better vs. RHP, but held his own vs. LHP last year in AAA. His MLE from last year was a solid .313/.366/.429/.795, not outstanding to be sure but better than we've received in CF the last two years.

Can the A's wait until 2008...
...to decide the two players to be named later?
by FormerHuntsvilleStar on Apr 27, 2007 5:21 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
and, more importantly ...
... can we break their arms before we send them to Cinci?

Don't be silly.
What A's minor leaguer doesn't already have a broken arm?

Recovery from Tommy John
I know Ellis made it, but isnt the recovery rate relatively low? this move does not excite me at all, aquiring another injured player is not my idea of improvement....
by OAKobsession on Apr 27, 2007 8:15 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Wrong
The recovery rate for TJ surgery is crazy high. Greater than 90%, actually. There's plenty of information out there on the procedure, but a quick Google search came up with this:
by Aaron C on Apr 27, 2007 8:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
In fact...
...some guys come off TJ with stronger arms than they had pre-injury.
by Ozzz on Apr 28, 2007 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ellis didn't have surgery on his shoulder
he rehabbed it instead. I also think his injury was much worse than TJ surgery. TJ surgery has become pretty routine. By contrast, Ellis' injury was so severe (including nerve damage) that it was potentially career-ending.
by OaklandSi on Apr 27, 2007 8:38 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also, TJ is for the elbow, not shoulder.

Durazo had it.
And look at how well he's doing!

PTBNL's probably depend on the health improvement
of Denorfia over the next few months I imagine.

the Reds and A's know very well
who those PTBNL are.

"Krivsky said one of the two players the Reds are receiving likely will be announced within the next three days. He indicated both were close to being Major League-ready. No specifics in regard to the cash considerations were disclosed."

"close to being Major League-ready"
Hm. Doesn't that pretty much rule out actual A's minor-leaguers?
by monkeyball on Apr 28, 2007 8:03 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It certainly rules out

I like this pickup
But I hope Halsey isn't one of the PTBNL, although it would make sense if he was. Both his and Denorfia's value are down right now. Jeremy Brown or Komine might make sense too.
This should give the A's a pretty solid righthanded outfielder off the bench next year and look at the guys numbers, seems like he can hit, we could use some of that offense stuff.
by pinkfloyd on Apr 28, 2007 11:13 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm saying Brown's in the mix.
And Mellilo.
But that's a total guess.

PTBNL: It's Marcus McBeth
Plus one still TBNL. So sayeth the press release.
by wedge on Apr 28, 2007 11:22 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Ouch
I like Denorfia, but McBeth was a very intriguing guy.
by BlameChannel53 on Apr 28, 2007 11:30 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Same here
I keep double- and triple-checking that press release in case I'm mistaking McBeth for some other "M" guy.
This probably got posted before, but the Sacto Bee did a nice profile on McBeth in early April. It starts with, "When it comes to dreams, sometimes you have to be flexible." Seems even more appropriate now.
by wedge on Apr 28, 2007 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Now I'm not as pleased about this.
I liked McBeth a lot.
