PrintPerhaps this wasn’t what Ron Washington envisioned when he took the job managing the Texas Rangers—a 6-9 start with a no-hitter thrown in and his 1-5 hitters all batting .222 or lower—but I’m sure he’s still having a blast. Tonight, he takes on his former team for the first time, with Brandon McCarthy and his airplane like 7.07 ERA squaring off against the round Joe Blanton. Following their two-game sweep of the Angels, Oakland enters play in first place with a record of 8-7 and a lineup tonight that has Milton Bradley and Mark Ellis ack in baction. Said lineups:

Finally finds the explanation
Manager Terry Francona and Jason Varitek came up with the idea to wear a remembrance of Virginia Tech on their uniforms. So, on the green uniforms that the Sox are wearing today in memory of Red Auerbach, there is a small "VT" on the sleeve of the green jersey that was approved by MLB.

In my non-expert opinion...
he had a better shot at it than Crosby. It was a long run for them both, though.
Croz ended up maybe a foot or 2 shy
and Stewart was nowhere near the play.

I remember the TX announcers
from an A's blowout in Arlington last year, and they were actually kind of funny. The color guy ended up talking for a couple of innings about trying to speak Spanish during Winter League seasons.

Rangers announcers are discussing a time...
...in the late '80s when they thought they were one player away from winning the division and made some stupid moves that didn't help.
Isn't that more or less the story of this franchise for most of the last two decades? They always think they're one bat away. Then they either do nothing, or do something stupid. And somehow they never have pitching.

If it is the Ranger announcers then Tom Grieve is talking, and he was the Rangers GM. He traded away a lot of young talent for quick fixes that didn't pan out.
You can also look at what Jon Hart did to the Indians farm system for the same effect
