Schedule Eases Up - A's Should Begin to Roll

The Schedule Changes Now...

The Schedule Changes Now...

The A's opened the season against 3 playoff contenders (Cal, NYY, CWS) and a wannabe (Seattle) and despite barely scoring 3 runs a game came out 8-7.  Torturous to watch and a bit lucky that NYY and Cal had injury issues, but in the end a good showing given all the A's injuries.

The next month and a half (through the end of May) they play 37 games and only 8 of those games (Bos, Cle, CWS) would I consider against playoff teams.

This stretch will probably let us know what kind of team the A's are.  If they take advantage of the schedule they should go 22-15 or better.

If they don't play well, then they better be hitting on all cylinders in June when at least 19 of 28 games are against playoff contenders (Bos, NYY, NYM, Cle, Minn, and some combo of Hou or Stl or Cinn) and the only sure free ride is against the Barry's.

First 10% of Season Report Card

  •  Thank God Loaiza got hurt.  Gaudin is a stud
  •  Starters have been much better than advertised
  •  Relief has had a few blowups, but generally good
  •  Hitting has been atrocious.  two of last three wins were Earl Weaver ball -- "pitching and three run homeruns".  Need more power

Bottom line:  This team can win the division.  They have great pitching, but need more power and any hitting.

What will Billy do before the trade deadline?  Don't know, but if Shannon Stewart doesn't start hitting in next week I think it's time to experiment with Barton.  Or need Billy to pull another rabbit out of the hat and find the next undervalued Matt Stairs, John Jaha, etc.
