Our offense is not good, but is clutch!
We are just in mid april and we have already beaten 3 of the best closers in baseball, K-Rod, Jenks and Rivera. Amazing.

Sorry to go off-topic...
But, Bad Vlad just got hit in the wrist/hand and had to leave this mornings Angels/Red Sox game.
The guy kills us, but I hope he is alright because injuries to key players simply suck.
Both teams were warned by the umps and yes, Mike Scioscia made a big deal since he is a baby.

First time in Oakland
I had a terrific time. I flew in last monday and had the luck of getting to watch the White-sox and Yankee series. I will remember this trip for a life time I met some great people, the service at the Hilton was tremendous, and to top it off my seats were out of this world. I feel like a kid on X-mas morning.
I met some great Yankee fans that were staying at the Hilton, good people considering who they were cheering for..lol.
And the most amazing part was that I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Alan Embree, Jay Marshall and Travis Buck and his Dad Steve at the sports bar in the Hilton. I also met Bobby Crosby's family on the shuttle going to and coming from the game.
I'm still in amazement about this whole trip.
Gotta love these A's!!!!!!!!

Agree with BCG, this anti-Crosby thing is ..
.. almost being taken too far .. to the point of bad taste .. that is not intended to insult or offend other A's fans, just my opinion ..
by Randy Bell on Apr 16, 2007 10:38 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No offense....
but how about being a part of AN for longer than ten minutes before you start complaining about things on the site being in bad taste.
Plus, you haven't even seen May yet. I fear for you.
by baseballgirl on Apr 16, 2007 12:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
But it is in bad taste to boo your own players
.. a la yankees fans - it has nothing to do with a particular blog or site, it is my opinion that isn't a cool thing to do, even if a player is not playing well ..
.. if that offends, so be it .. there is certainly no offense intended, though .. I commend you {as I did in the in-game thread yesterday} and all the "admin" folks for the very good job y'all do with the introductions and stuff.
Regardless of what time I've been here {few months, don't remember when I joined and I can't find it in my profile}: I realize May is usually a bad month for the A's and keep my fingers crossed every year.
I know that if I were to violate AN Guidelines, the leadership would not accept any "rookie" status as excuse nor spare me a violation due to that, so .. enough with the putdown and newbie treatment BBG .. I don't appreciate it - thanks.

And I don't appreciate being called a bad fan!
Just because you say that you didn't intend any offense, how do you think people are going to take it when basically you tell people if they don't support Crosby, they are not doing the 'cool thing', or they are practicing 'bad taste? You've made it clear with 17,000 posts in three different diaries over the last 24 hours that you think that people who don't support Crosby are somehow lesser fans, and I take great offense to that.
I have met Ed Crosby (Bobby's dad). He seems like a great guy; no doubt his son is as well. I have had high hopes from Crosby since the day he came up to the Major Leagues. I cheered when he won the ROY award.
But I am not going to ignore major defensive problems from a key position on the team to go with very little offensive production, because you think somehow it's the cool thing to do.
I call it like I see it. Crosby is welcome to change my mind, but until he does, it's in pretty poor taste for you to keep telling fans what they should and shouldn't say about players on the team, especially when you have exactly zero evidence on which to base your position.
I bleed green and gold as much as anyone, but I don't excuse poor play. I took the same amount of heat for being a Macha-hater from the start, but that was my opinion, backed up with a lot of examples.
I want NOTHING more than for Crosby to be good. But he's not right now, and like it or not, whether you think it's 'cool' or not, that's the story right now.
by baseballgirl on Apr 16, 2007 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Apologize: sometimes it's hard to discern whether
.. an offense is given {due to moral fault in the giver} or taken {due to same in the receiver}. You know, the "methinks he doth protest too much" principle.
Anyway you are right, you're obviously a swell gal, a veteran A's fan who is admin level here at AN and been here a lot longer than me, so ... I'm sorry for gettin yer dander up, BBG .. I still love ya! {What little I've learned, heh}
It is also difficult {if not impossible} sometimes to see a fan's inner heart - whether their negative spirit about some issue stems from legitimate concern and ultimately positive desire to see the team improve, - or whether they are just being sourpuss, whining, etc.
But that's not my right nor intent, to judge anyone's motive or heart .. sorry bout that! {I mean, if I offended or hurt due to that} :)
by Randy Bell on Apr 16, 2007 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thanks...
...and just so you know, I certainly don't equate length-of-time-on-AN with anyone's fandom, but I think I probably could have given a more friendly reminder that this is a new community for you, and it's hard to get an accurate picture of posters in that amount of time.
Just so you know, I wasn't speaking as anyone other than a fan, who is extremely frustrated with our shortstop right now. Funny because at the beginning of the season, I was fine with Bobby Crosby = .240, 15-20 homeruns, great defense, and ironically, I would have to agree with the people who think Crosby is trying to adjust his swing. He has looked marginally better at the plate.
But his defense is as bad as it gets right now, and has been since opening day. I'm okay with his low offensive production, as long as the defense is there; and it's not. He is costing the A's games on both ends of the field now, and that's simply unaaceptable, and frustrating, because as you know, there is not really a solution.

Also btw, that reminds me of another good reason
.. vindicating my vote for A-Rod .. although his offense is dynamite and he is a future HOF'er for sure if he stays healthy - I'll take Eric Chavez defensively over A-Rod for sure! A-Rod's defense has at times been atrocious, like, "three errors in one game" type of atrocious ... ;-(

BBG, I must interject here.
I have been keeping my mouth shut about the Crosby stuff basically since the season started. Simply because I understand that if I start defending him to one person, I will spend the rest of my waking moments defending him to people. And honestly, that would get exhausting given his play as of late.
But, on the other hand, I feel, given my love of my boy that I have some what a responsiblity to try and defend him every so often. But, as Randy was trying to point out, some of the bashing has gone a little far, bordering on the obsurd and cruel. So why would I try and reason with people like that.
I don't think Randy was trying to offend you or anyone inparticular, just trying to point out that there is a lot of crap being flung at Bobby and it is hard to see past it on this site. It seems like every other diary is "Bobby Sucks," "He is destroying Us!" "Send Bobby Down!"
It is a rare thing when people take a step back and realize that Bobby has been out for a very long time. He has not had regular playing time since last JUNE. And even then I think he was hurt a big chunck of time. He also missed a significant part of Spring Training.
I am a firm believer that once Bobby gets use to being on the field again, his errors will go away and his fielding will significantly improve. I also believe that once he gets a few more at bats he will also improve on Offense. I don't think he has been doing that bad actually given his situation, but I think he will improve dramatically in a couple weeks, after seeing consistant major league pitching.
His biggest problem right now is that he has lost his strutt. I don't think he has his confidence. As someone else on AN pointed out, there is a big black cloud over his head right now. As soon as he clears that out, I think he will be able to improve. But his confidence is seriously lacking.
I understand how you feel BBG. Believe me. I have had my moments where I just wanted to shake him and make him understand that he needs to step it up, but I didn't for fear of breaking him. ;) But really, I think that he will come around soon.
As I mentioned earlier, I don't want to spend the rest of my life defending my boy, but I felt that you were someone who would actually listen to me.
As for Randy's comments, I think that he was right in saying things have gotten out of control. People need to take a deep breath and remember that it is only April. Things will come around, including Bobby.
by BobbyCrosbysGirl on Apr 16, 2007 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Awwww....
BCG...It's not that I'm not listening, or that I don't FULLY appreciate (and am kind of in awe of) your faith in Crosby, but the problem is, I just don't see any evidence for where the defense "He'll be okay" is coming from. When Frank Thomas was struggling last April, everyone kept saying, "He'll be okay". But Frank has a LONG history of being a Hall of Fame Major League baseball player. Bobby Crosby has had, really, one good month in his career. There simply isn't any evidence that he'll ever be good, and right now, he's not even average!
When people use this defense, I feel like they keep pointing to an empty piece of paper, saying, "But don't you see this amazing drawing?! It has the potential to be a masterpiece!", and all I see is a blank piece of paper.
I will give you that it's April, and two mere weeks into the season. I'll give you that Bobby was injured the majority of last year, and might not be 100% still. And believe me, I hope that your feeling is right, and that he comes around starting tomorrow.
But I was embarrassed to have him on the field in this series. He made even the most routine play scary.
I don't know if it's mental, or physical, but something needs to be fixed, and I'm just pointing it out. I don't want Crosby to fail; most likely, if he does, the A's are done.
by baseballgirl on Apr 16, 2007 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe it is just pure blind faith
But whatever it is, I do believe he will come around.
As for Bobby's performance on the field this series, did you see THEIR short stop? He had 3 Errors, Bobby only had one. Not that it is good to be happy with only one error, but compare that to what the "beloved and worshiped" Derik Jeter did, and it is almost silly to complain.
I totally understand what you are saying though, even I hold my breath every time a ball goes Bobby's way. But I also feel like he may be under a amplified microscope. People expect him to do well, he is healthy now, why shouldn't he be perfect? But he needs to get his confidence back and have some regular playing time before he should be judged too harshly.
Yes, Thomas had his HOF career to back him up. But given his age, I felt there was significantly more uncertainty about his recovery.
Maybe I am just pointing at a blank sheet of paper, using my imagination to explain to you that Bobby is a great player, we just haven't seen it yet.
But I promise, my vision is a beautiful one and I think that Bobby just needs some time to realize that he can reach that "Great" label that has been put on him.
I just hope that people here on AN would give him that time and stop calling for his head so soon. If he is still struggling in late May, maybe I will join them, but I prefer to give him my faith and just keep praying that he will come around.

Given its time of publishing (1:30 a.m.), I couldn't really know if anybody besides me would find it worked. After about 60 of these, I want to be sure they hit somebody in the right way, or it's a lot of effort without a lot of return.

I was just wondering if there is someone
more valuable on the team than Marco Scutaro. Not in terms of talent but in terms of what he can do Scutaro can play almost any postion on the field except maybee catcher or pitcher. He can hit a little and he seems to have the mental makeup where he does not get nervious in important situations and he plays very good D. He is good at almost every spot in the infield although I am not sure if he has the arm strength to play 3rd. To me Scutaro is the best utility player that we have had in the last decade which is why to me at least he is one of the most valuable players on the team.

by Randy Bell on Apr 16, 2007 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
For starters ... offensively ...
Piazza has been more valuable. And Swisher. And probably Chavez.
All three of which have contributed more win-shares than Scutaro. Fact of the matter is, without Scutaro, Beane would find another super-sub to use. Just because Scoot has hit one walk-off this year, does not make him more valuable to the team than the aforementioned players. Just throwing a wet dose of reality onto the fire.

At first, Jason Giambi was a hero...
...but Emperor Steinbrenner turned him to the dark side. The heroic Scutaro brought a victory for good in this series, but can Steinbrenner ever be defeated? Even if he is forced into bankruptcy, the one who executes the hostile takeover will only rule in his place as the Eveil Emperor! Perhaps only Giambi himself, in the ultimate deed of self-sacrifice, can ruin the Imperial plans, refusing to allow a rookie to be tortured at the Emperor's hands, and so taking all the pain upon himself as he ... um ... throws George Steinbrenner into a reactor core? Help me out here.
