Open Thread - Bay Bridge Series 3
Oh yeah, there's one more game!
BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!
So excited.
Our A's and Joe Kennedy take on the Giants for one more game before...dare I say it...THE REAL SEASON STARTS!!!!
P.S. I could NOT agree with Nico more. I initially was saying bring up Buck/Durazo and send down Perez, but this works just as well, maybe even better if you consider that Walker's D is probably better than Durazo's. Either way, it gets Buck up to the majors for a chance to play every day. LOVE this move; congrats A's management!

okay....my great escape today.
you could see that coming.
Whoo-ee
Joe Kennedy is bad. Can't wait to see how long he lasts in the rotation.
Bonds will get his HR's this season
I don't think Walker got the nod because of his D. I think he got it because the A's thought he'd be a better bench bat than Durazo.
mlb.tv
does anyones mlbtv work? my says cant find file
no problemo here
Mine works
The premium MLBtv broadcast works. Kruk and Kuip.

Whats the difference between Premium and reg?
Not much.
For 14.99, exactly what it was last year. For 19.99, better picture quality and the ability to watch up to six games at once. The better quality did it for me.

Uh oh
Bradley came out after 1 inning. That's a little early to be replaced in an exhibition game. Hopefully just precautionary.
and geo scientist have
calculated Mt. Everest height to be one or two foot lower.
So far it appears that
QOTM nomination.
sums up 4,000-5,000 posts since ST started, but in a punchline
I Hope for the A's Sake that ..
.. BB has the last laugh ..

I continue to worry that
We really need to dominate the starts made by Harden, Haren, and Blanton until Loaiza gets back--hopefully that will be after missing just a couple starts.
less worried about his performance
against Bonds. Say what you will, Bonds has a good eye at the plate -- better than many players younger than him.
I'd be more worried about how Kennedy fares against other hitters.
Yikes.
Kennedy is terrible. And he's the fourth starter now... gulp.

Also want to add....
why is Danny Haren not starting against Noah Lowry like he's supposed to?! I know, I know, "Opening Day" or something, but c'mon, it's tradition. After all, they "went to Pepperdine" together. ;)

I Agree - am more optimistic now
.. who was it, Welch? .. had a 27.0 ERA in ST but went on to win the Cy Young in regular season ..
by Randy Bell on Apr 1, 2007 1:55 PM PDT up reply actions
Not saying Joe_K is "cy young" stuff, just ..
.. will hopefully be OK as a 5th-starter. I followed the Yahoo Sports Rumors closely and it seemed many teams have the same issue with finding a decent 5th ..
by Randy Bell on Apr 1, 2007 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions
I hope so too
it's just that so far in his career he seems to be better in the pen than starting. But I'm sure we'll find out...
Kennedy....
Needs to not be in the majors. What is this horrible pitcher doing in our rotation?
{i think} he had lowest ERA from the pen last yr
by Randy Bell on Apr 1, 2007 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions
It doesn't matter that he did well in the pen
what matters is that he does not have the talent to be a starting pitcher. I wonder if there is a better choice in another pitcher. Something tells me yes.
Needs to not be in the majors
.. that is what you have up there in your post. I thought you meant, including bullpen as well ..

Sorry
I was just taking my frustration out in extreme terms. I just don't think hes got the stuff of starters.
you may be right about Joe_K starting ..
.. but we are hoping for an A's Miracle come regular season .. {grin} ..
by Randy Bell on Apr 1, 2007 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions
I certainly hope so.
I do feel good about the offense this season though.
Ugh.
I think some minor leaguer was supposed to be good enough by now.
Is Bradley dead?
and today!
by BruceBochte on Apr 1, 2007 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions
Did they say why he was taken out of the game?
Ok.
Maybe I'm just paranoid.
Yeah, it's not like
Who is the 5th starter
until Bloiaza gets of the DL?
by BruceBochte on Apr 1, 2007 1:59 PM PDT reply actions
Oh please!
In fact, I predict that in 2 months Kennedy will be back in the pen and Gaudin will be our #5 starter.
by Threepwood XX on Apr 1, 2007 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions
perhaps
although there's been alot written about Gaudin needing at least one more good pitch -- and to improve his consistency -- in order to become a good starter
Even though no one would argue that Gaudin has a better arm, Halsey has definitely been sent to AAA -- and is joining the rotation -- to prepare for possible emergency starts.
Gaudin

YAY!!!!!
-Cindi.
Alas, Poor Meluse, I know him well.
Zook looks like the real deal offensively--anyone know anything about his arm, defense and game-calling?
by The Dogfather on Apr 1, 2007 5:32 PM PDT up reply actions
poor melhuse?
he's terrible to put it kindly. the guy strikes out way too often. as a catcher, you'd think he'd have better knowledge of the strike zone.
even Durazo had some nice plays
Walker's career speaks for itself.
on the other hand, I'm fine with his signing. He was signed for his bat, not his glove.
{hehe} I'll take the bat!
.. especially considering how much the A's offense sucked wind in the first half .. {g} ..

Who was just pitching?
Who's Petite at third?
Gregorio Petit
All D, no bat SS prospect. His bat could come around as he's still very young.

WTG suzuki!
by Randy Bell on Apr 1, 2007 3:24 PM PDT reply actions
I just hope it's the last
too bad Suzuki didn't make...
the 25 man roster along with Buck. Would have had a more potent offense this year. Guess Beane just couldn't find a way to DL Kendall or dump Melhuse.
I'm glad Kendall is handling the 2007 staff
and it would be terrible for Suzuki to twiddle his thumbs on the bench behind the iron man.
Good Point

anyone read the Jayson Stark article about Harden
I stumbled across the little tease on ESPN, not knowing that it was another of those "Signup for ESPN Insider" articles, but was intrigued by what I saw at first. Wondering if anyone wants to paraphrase it at all...
Someone gave him the idea of doing a blog on a different pitchers' line during a game, and Kennedy's was what made him think of writing. I'm guessing that the next story was about Harden...
Go A's.
Really, apart from the "Bonds Bombs" ..
.. Kennedy's outing today wasn't that bad ..
by Randy Bell on Apr 1, 2007 3:32 PM PDT reply actions
By the Way ..
Y'all know I hate the Giants, with a passion -- but, steroids or not -- Mr. Bonds can flat-out hit! ;-(
by Randy Bell on Apr 1, 2007 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions
true, his line looks fine
we'll find out this week how he does against a major-league club, though (limited to to the 25-man roster)...
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln...
...howdja like the play?
by The Dogfather on Apr 1, 2007 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions
Well-Mr. Bonds has made LOTs of pitchers look bad
.. including the "other barry" .. Bonds has hit some bombs off him too ..
by Randy Bell on Apr 1, 2007 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions
You're right--thirty times...
...he hit 2 homers in the same day against the same pitcher (can't tell whether the ABs were consecutive, however).
Our Joe's also in good company, including Hershizer, Moyer, Saberhagen, Schilling twice, Hudson twice and Mulder.
