Hi Cindi. Actually, it's not an album

it's a man who was put in prison, wrongly accused of being worse than a man named Nicholas Swisher in Right Field.

I was always afraid that my baby's first words...

would have been, "I hate Durazo" seeing as how often I said it in Naught 5. However, this spring was an eerie reminder when she repeated, "Oh F**K!" immediately after I heard about DJ's hip...I was sure that this poor little sweet 2 year old was doomed to remember years later how sad it was to watch her father listen to the game and mutter constantly..."I hate Durazo!"

Well...Problem solved.

Nico made a good point in the other thread...

Sorry, laughed at that for some reason, not sure why.

Anyway, Kielty full time is far better than what we can expect from Walker at first.  I can see using Kielty in Right and Swish at First to start the season with Buck in AAA.  This leaves Walker on the bench to warm Geren's seat, a job once held by the likes of Ginter and Perez (for Macha) and Yabu (for, ironically, Geren in the bullpen).  If Kielty falls flat on his face or gets injured and/or leaves us no other choice, then then we immediately call up Buck and the new era begins.

Disagree - we risk more serious injury to Kielty

.. by overworking Kielty we risk further injury problems on the team .. as I posted in reply to Nico's post in previous thread ..

If Kielty isn't ready to handle

those duties, then he'd better start the season on the DL.  Seriously, if his body isn't up for the task and he truly is pushing himself, he's no good to us or himself right now.  He should be focused on getting healthy first.  But since he's supposedly back to all of his baseball activities, you have to assume that's not the case.

by DMOAS on Mar 31, 2007 10:38 PM PDT up reply actions

How?

Since when has Kielty learned to consistently hit right handed pitchers?

by IndianaAsfan on Apr 1, 2007 10:17 AM PDT up reply actions

This is a note from the side

Buck has had an impressive spring, but he still might at least three months away, and it'd be a bad idea to drop Kielty for him, as it leave the team overly left-handed. Buck and Todd Walker are both left-handed hitters, and there should only be room for one. If Buck is carried, he'd be the primary right fielder, pushing Nick Swisher to first base.

Now I know in the past we were left handed heavy, but right now, other than switch hitters, and Kotsay, who is on the DL, what other lefties do we have besides Chavy

Kielty is a poor defender by every measure

And by David Pinto's probalistic model of range, he's atrocious.
And THAT was in left field. I really don't want to see him holding down right.

You don't want Kielty playing every day. He is only worth having on the field on days when his bat is very valuable (.900 ops)- when he's facing lefties.

When Kielty gets starts against righties, he becomes our worst fielder and arguably the worst hitter in the lineup.
That's an unacceptable combo, and the reason that he must be platooned.

<cough> Walker <cough>

Who would you rather have on the field?  Kielty in Right with Swisher at First, or Swisher in Right and Walker at First?  Defensively liability or not, I'll take Kielty hobbling around on his hands and knees than Walker.  Besides, Swisher and Ellis have great range leaving less ground for The Clown to cover.

by DMOAS on Mar 31, 2007 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions

What?

The range of your second baseman and your first baseman only impact the rightfielder on bloop hits.  Those represent little of the ground a rightfielder typically covers.  Few, if any, worry about the range of their infielders when deciding which outfielders to play.
Have you ever seen Walker play first?  He's better defensively at first than DJ is.

Agreed, and your use for Kielty is also safer ..

Walker is guaranteed to be the ML roster

He wouldn't have signed with us if he wasn't, and he wouldn't have flown out for one game to play first if he wasn't.
He's getting a crash course at first base because Beane has promised him a spot on the 25-man and promised him at least a part in a platoon at first.

Walker will be fine in a few weeks, tops. The transition from second base to first is not nearly as hard as Hatteberg's transition from CATCHER to first.
He's moving from an incredibly taxing defensive position to arguably the easiest one on the field. I promise you he'll be considered a VERY GOOD defensive first baseman by mid-season. That's a guarantee.

Something encouraging about Walker - we're getting him for pennies, and this guy was due to make 4 million from the Padres.

Completely disagree

If Walker had half of Mark Ellis' skills then yes, he'd be fine at First.  But Walker doesn't.  He has trouble handling the routine ground ball at 2nd.  That doesn't translate well at first when balls are thrown in the dirt frequently.  If Wash were still around then maybe, but he isn't.

And if Walker was guaranteed the spot, he'd have a major league deal.  This was a trial run nothing more.  He still might make the team, but if he does and he gets significant time at 1st, it'll be a disaster.

Is it just me?

I am a little confused by the A's signing Durazo, watching him have a productive spring, then deciding to sign Walker so they could give Durazo his release.  Is there a point to all this?  Or did Ruby do something that warranted his release?  Is it simply because they view Walker as having more value?

Color me confused, cause I really just don't get it.

by Randy Bell on Mar 31, 2007 10:54 PM PDT up reply actions

I've said this elsewhere

but Ruby did not have a productive spring. He had an excellent week and a half. Taken as a whole, he had a .288 OBP this spring. That's awful at any position, let alone first base.

by Nate on Mar 31, 2007 11:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Not uncommon for non-roster invitees

Guys fitting the Durazo profile--free agent big league vets without a lot of teams interested in them--often sign this kind of deal.  Rather than auditioning for a spot on the A's, Ruby was really auditioning for all 30 clubs...hence the understanding, also common in such deals, that he could request and receive his release if the A's weren't going to give him a 25 man roster spot.

What will be interesting to see is whether his spring (and Mex league winter) were enough to get a spot with any of the other teams, or whether the A's were just his last best hope.

They were planning on scouring the waiver wire

all along.

They had 39 spots on the 40-man roster - knowing that some ML team would probably release a guy who was good enough to make their team.

When Walker got released, which I'm sure was a possibly the A's had considered at the start of ST, they were ready to pounce.

Walker ended up being the best guy who got released. If the best guy released had been a high-ceiling reliever, or any other spot, they probably would've added that guy.

You'd have to argue this - of every player who was released, across the entire league, none has the track record Walker does.

He's potentially an .800-.825 OPS guy as half of a platoon, and could become a very good defender at his new position. No one else who was released can say that.

Ugh

I really am not looking forward to seeing Walker in the lineup. ZiPs projects him at .270/.344/.381. That's mediocre for a 2B, and wretched at 1B. At least Durazo would have been more likely to hit a little (ZiPs = .279/.363/.425).

and durazo has essentially been out of baseball for almost two years, i don't know if i'd rely too much on what some projection thinks he'll do.

Kielty still has an option left

So technically for the 2nd season in a row he can be sent to Sac to start the season.  If they kept Buck to start in Right and Walker to ride the pine, Kielty could re-hab the knee for as long as he needs or as long as the team doesn't need him.

by DMOAS on Mar 31, 2007 11:05 PM PDT reply actions

Which, again, is 40-man roster manipulation

The A's manage the 40-man better than anybody.

Tonight I'm gonna research transitions to first base and post a diary on them. That's how good my social life is. Saturday night. 11 p.m. West Coast time. 24 years old. I'm researching late career position changes.

Off the top of my head, though, I'll just say this:

Albert Pujols was not good enough defensively to play third base. He switched to first base, and quickly became one of the best defensive first basemen in baseball - the BEST according to David Pinto's probalistic model of range.

If you take a third baseman, short stop, or second baseman, and you switch him to first - he probably has the potential to be "above-average" defensively, relative to who he's competing against - the lumbering guys that most people put there.

Kielty is not even remotely on the radar to be a full time starter. When hitting left-handed, combined with his defense, he would be one of the worst five outfielders in the AL if not the very worst.

I'm appalled by the lack of recognition

of platoon splits and relative importance of first base defense.  Let me give you a list of teams who sacrifice offense for defense at first:

Okay, that's it.  A Walker-Swisher platoon will more or less approximate DJ.  The real tragedy will be if Buck makes the team.  He really doesn't seem ready for the big show yet.

A platoon may work

As usual, you are a voice of reason.  If Kielty plays right against LH pitchers with Swisher playing 1B, Walker at 1B with Swisher at right against RH pitchers is not so bad.  Of course, this all depends on Bradley and Stewart staying healthy, which is hoping for something that has not happened in the past few seasons.

I'd like to eat my lunch, but Billy just kicked me out of my office.

by BlameChannel53 on Apr 1, 2007 6:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Platoon might even be better than DJ
Take a look at Ken Arneson's excellent brief discussion of this potential platoon arrangement. I'll just borrow the numbers from him:

2006 vs LHP (Kielty): .325/.358/.607
2006 vs RHP (Walker): .302/.368/.425

If we go with a strict platoon--let each of these guys do the thing he can still do well and not let him do the thing they can't do well--that position could actually be an offensive strength rather than a somewhat-papered-over weakness. And for damn cheap, too.

by Faust on Apr 1, 2007 7:27 AM PDT up reply actions

not just better, but healthier team-wise

.. I know I sound like "broken record" repetition but just as reminder, Kielty is coming off of knee surgery and shouldn't be overused even if it was justified numbers- /stat-wise {which is clearly not justified due to his poor hitting record against righties and his overall defense}.

.. the Athletics may be small-market but they have BIG-heart! ..

by Randy Bell on Apr 1, 2007 7:32 AM PDT up reply actions

On paper, it does look pretty dandy

The only thing we have to remember is that this arrangement only works when everyone is healthy.  Stewart is going to need days off, and so will Bradley, and that's when we end up with Kielty hitting left-handed and Walker facing lefthanders.

I'd like to eat my lunch, but Billy just kicked me out of my office.

by BlameChannel53 on Apr 1, 2007 7:39 AM PDT up reply actions

When Stewart needs days off...

We need to be playing guys like Antonio Perez and Melhuse MORE.

Part of why Melhuse and Perez were terrible last year was that they didn't get enough at-bats to stay sharp (I realize this is a double-edged sword; if they had hit better, they'd get more ABs).

Look at Melhuse's best year - he had over 200 ABs. A study I would like to see is, "What is the baseline # of at-bats the average ML bench-player needs to stay sharp and play up to his optimal effectiveness?" I'm certain it's more than the 100 Perez got last year.

More rest for Stewart = find a way to get Perez more at-bats.
The more he gets, the more likely it is that he gets a chance to show that he's a legimate major leaguer.

Buck needs to the absolute LAST resort.

I had the same thought last night as did countless othe A's fans.  To recap my position briefly:

  • (Walker+Kielty) ~ (DJ or Buck) offensively and defensively
  • Durazo had a pretty bad spring training
  • Preserves our flexibility to call up Buck when we please
  • Walker is an easy DFA candidate if/when DJ comes back

Converted first basemen (Walker's predecessors)

The best example of course is Pujols, a converted third baseman who has become, according to David Pinto's PMR, the best defensive first baseman in the game.
Others who have made the switch from middle infield to playing first base at least part-time include:

Rich Aurilia
Nomar Garciaparra
Jeff Kent
Howie Kendrick (at times last year)
Ty Wigginton

That list intentionally doesn't include OFs who convert to first base full or part-time. Those guys often convert for a different reason.

What that list DOES show is that the A's are not being nuts. There is certainly precedent. First base is a logical transition for a guy who no longer has the range for middle infield, and who's team has a need for .800 OPS production at first.

"Fictional numbers are really effective for making your case." -Devo

by notsellingjeans on Apr 1, 2007 8:18 AM PDT reply actions

The Problems those guys had

at their original position were A) poor throwing capabilities B) lack of/reduced range C) a combo of the two.

Walker's poor defense concerns his ability to carry out the basic and fundamental task of acquiring a routine groundball usually direct at or near him.

This doesn't translate well to receiving throws near and directly at him at First.  Nor does it translate well to the grounders at First.  I'd rather see Melhuse converted to First than Walker.

Ron Washington

Something I have to dispute that's been written here a few times in the last 24 hours...

Ron Washington is a great guy. He knows a lot about the game. He helped Chavvy take his defense to another level, and they built up a rapport. By all accounts he was pretty fun to hang out with, in addition to being a good coach.

He's also not the only guy who knows how to coach infield defense! Ron Washington didn't have a monopoly on teaching people how to pick grounders at first. Walker will not tragically be unable to make the transition to first because Ron Washington is now giving Hank Blalock pats on the butt rather than Chavvy.

I don't even know who the hell our infield coach is right now, and I follow the A's pretty closely. What I do know is, whoever he is, can teach Todd Walker how to pick grounders just as well as Ron Washington can.

The X factor is how much work Walker puts in, just like it was for Hatteberg. Hatteberg worked hard and became very good at it. Good scouting, above average athleticism, good work ethic. That's why Hatteberg worked. Not fairy dust in Ron Washington's armpit.

Walker is a professional who has pride, and who recognizes this as maybe his last chance to ply his trade as a professional hitter. I'm sure he'll work hard too.

I agree. This has been bugging me for a while

Wash being gone does not eliminate our coaching crew's ability to teach guys stuff. Wash may have had a talent for instruction, but he doesn't have a magic wand, and he's not the only guy out there who can help guys figure out how to play a new position.

Walker has played first before

in addition to other infield positions.

He has played with several teams, and has been on them for his offense -- definitely not for his defense.

Hatty had not played first before Wash worked with him. Perez was not terrible defensively before working with Wash. and Chavvy was very young and coming up when he worked with Wash.

I don't think even having Wash as the infield coach would significantly change Walker's skills in the infield.

hmmm, that was good

oh sorry, Nico, didn't see your post -- did you want breakfast?

Now looking at that link; a couple of OFers, but obviously nothing that would have inspired the A's.

I'm curious as to whether Jason Stokes (the players that the A's acquired in exchange for Baker) is in fill-in plans at all. Just briefly checked him out -- he's a first baseman who was a first round draft choice and is considered to have a bit of pop.

Carlos Pena

Interesting to see Pena's name on the transactions list though apparently as one staying instead of going. The fact that I even considered a Kielty / Pena platoon has to be discouraging. On the positive (or at least Angel neagative) side ... Colon, Weaver, and Figgins start the year on the DL.

none of this is positive, of course

it's never good to see players get injured

agreed ..

25 post, one for each player, this is probably easier ;)

Please keep Ellis, Crosby and Chavvy healthy

I'd hate to see Walker at any other position besides 1B (not that 1B excites me either, but the other positions would be worse)

by OaklandSi on Apr 1, 2007 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions

Walker won't play anything but 1B

unless it's a true emergency like two players getting hurt in the same game. If anything happens to one of those three, Scutaro is the one who's going to be getting the playing time.

only the special ones can post a diary on AN. Oh, great and noble Blez, when will you let me into your realm of diary publishing??

Buck

I just love the fact that we're keeping Travis Buck! But we've gotta come up with a few good nicknames for him...

Anyone?

Whenever Travis Buck comes to bat

The chant in the stands could be "Buck you Angels!" ..or the appropriate opponent name.

...just a thought...
