Anyone try the new video games yet?

I haven't played any yet, but will probably buy one.  Has anyone played one?  I'm probably going to get MLB07: The Show.  That's the one by the company that used to be 989, right?  The last title I bought in that series was the one with Chavvy on the cover.  The next year I got MVP05 (with Manny) and probably would have stayed with MVP except that they don't do baseball anymore.

Last year I rented both MLB2k6 and MLB06.  I thought 2k6, despite all the hype, was retarded.  Every throw from right field to first was close to an out.  I didn't end up buying either, and just updated the rosters on my MVP05.  Anyway, I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy one this year and I was wondering if there was a concensus (sp?) on which was the better title.  Any info would be great.  Thanks.

I too am curious

I've been playing MVP05 and I'm still happy with it, but I would like to update the rosters without creating dozens of players and essentially scouting all their abilities. I'm not exactly crazy about the graphics in the new games, as they're seem inferior to MVP, but what I'm really interested in is game play and features.

after reading IGN reviews

The Show seems like the one to get, at least for the PS2, although I will again have to mute the commentary since Hudler is part of their threesome in the booth. Apparently the PS2 2K7 is buggy with lots of bogus player ratings (Shawn Green, Cliff Floyd and JD Drew get 100 ratings).

Don't have PS2

But I played MLB2k7 for xbox 360 and it's 100x better than last year.  I don't really care about graphics much, but they're pretty sweet.  Not a ton of depth on the franchise side, but the games seem pretty realistic.  They also have a dynamic difficulty that adjusts to your playing ability, so most of the games I've played are somewhat realistic (as opposed to the occasional 105-0 in MVP05).

Signatures? We don't need no stinking signatures.

MLB 2K7 (XBOX 360)

It's pretty legit.  Much better than 2K6, which was retarded.

MLB 2K7 sucks

I got 2K7 for PS3.  I bought into the hype of the graphics for it and needed to get a baseball fix.  Everything about the game was disappointing.  Go for The Show.

I happen to agree

The controls just stink in MLB2K7.  Everything you're supposed to do in the game is counterintuitive.  They've taken steps backwards on the control.  And I hate swinging the bat with the analog stick.  The graphics are just great,

but the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired.

Don't get it.  Wait until MVP comes back at some point.  That was still the best baseball franchise ever.

swinging with the bat stick

is counterintuitive?

lean back, push forward.

it's more intuitive than pressing a button at the right time.

i like it, just takes some actual time to get used to

I'm enjoying 2K7

No baseball game out can touch MVP 05. That game had the best control scheme ever developed.

I rented 2K6 last year for the 360 and wanted to return it 15 minutes after I got it. I was very skeptical this year about 2K7, but after watching the game play videos on gametrailers.com and playing the demo on XBOX Live, I felt it was going to be worth the money. I bought it the day it came out and have had a lot of fun with it. The graphics are amazing and the game play is much improved. I heard that one of the MVP developers joined the 2K team to build this game.

I recommend MLB 2K7.

I'm gonna go ahead and say...

...High Heat 2002 was the gold standard.

I still play that game now and then, and it's surprising how many virtually unknown minor league players in the 2002 version that I always trade for and who eventually kick much ass in later seasons, turned out to do the exact same thing in reality.

But then, I'm a franchise wonk rather than a game play geek.

One thing I'm sure we can all agree on - thank god the Triple Play franchise was allowed to die a horrible death. EA really screwed the pooch on that series.

OT: OT: The movie Departed

Since I don't play video games much I thought I'd off topic off topic. Saw Departed last night. Excellent entertainment. Best line of the movie was Jack Nicholson's charachter's reply after he asked a guy how his mother was doing:

Guy: She's on her way out.
Costello(Nicholson): We all are. Act accordingly.

That is pure Jack gold, right there, and the reason why Jack is Jack. Nobody does it better.

I'm sure

Jack come up with that line all by himself. Pure Jack.

Coincidentally, I saw it last night too.
I thought it was a loud scream for an Oscar from start to finish.

It's as if the producer got together with Scorsese and said "Okay, we need a mob film, since that's so Marty, and it should be one where the bad guys are really good and the good guys are really bad and really everyone is as good/bad as everyone, since that's so Marty. And we need an actor who is always an Oscar nominee, no matter what he's in, just because he's always good for an Oscars close-up. Maybe Nicholson."

And then Scorses said, "And we'll do it so that every single shot is a Scorsese shot - instead of an establishing shot of a guy walking into a building, we'll either do a 4 minute steadycam following him, or we'll rise the camera on a crane."

"Yeah," the producer added, "And whenever you switch scenes, either the sound will start before the picture does or the picture will start before the sound does. It'll be totally European and arty."

"And then," says Scorsese, "We'll release is in December, since nobody remembers films released before November 15th."

"Yeah! And let's get Lucas, Coppola and Spielberg to agree to present the Best Director Oscar... they'll NEVER give it to anyone else but you then!"

And sure enough...

For those who love MVP over 2K

Keep in mind that starting with 2K7, there is a 3 year process of revamping the game.  Ben Brinkman, the guy who made the MVP games that we all love, is heading up the project.

Year 1 was graphics and gameplay.  If you played 2k6, the game has definitely improved in these areas. If you're expecting to pick a game up right away and be able to succeed, then 2K (any of their sports titles) is not for you.  You have to practice at it, and once you get the hang of it, the controls are really intuitive and feel like 2nd nature.

Year 2 is going to be AI and Franchise fixes.  2k7 has a lot left to be yearned for in these areas.  The CPU still makes dumb trades/releases/signings, and the lineups are ridiculous after the first season of a franchise.  Troy Glaus leading off anyone?

I'm more of a franchise gamer myself, so that was the deal breaker for me.  I didn't buy the game, but I rented it and have gotten some good gameplay out of it. At least it beats the hell out of 2k6.

I too have played 2K7

on XBOX Live and while I only managed 2 hits in the three innings the demo allows, it seemed like a pretty good game and having Joe Morgan and Jon Miller as the commentators as opposed to Kuip and Kruk for past games was an improvement. I will most likely buy that one.

2K7 360

Got it a couple weeks ago and have enjoyed it.  Would have loved to see an MVP '07 but we can't win them all...

I'm actually enjoying MLB '07 quite a bit.

I liked the MVP series better, but you can't have that anymore, thanks to that business deal. I didn't hit very well in MVP '05 because I'm kind of colorblind, and the system where the ball changed colors for you to read the pitch was useless for me. Because of that, I gotta give the nod to '04.

But it was nice that lefties could hit home runs in '05. There really is something silly about hitting 100 HRs in a season with Eric Byrnes and 50 with mark Ellis, and none with Chavez, Hatteburg, and Kotsay.

Anyway, are there online leagues with Xbox Live for MLB '07? I'd love to get an Athletics Nation league going, or maybe a league where people from various SB Nation blogs play as their blog's team. That'd be pretty wicked.

mvp05

I play mvp05 on my computer and I downloaded mods that modernize the teams to the 07 rosters and schedule. It's really fun.

I haven't tried the 2k sports games because I don't have a game console... but I really want to play the mvp college game so I've been thinking of investing in a ps2. I figure the price shouldn't be so bad now that everyone is buying ps3s and xbox360s but who knows when I'll actually get around to it haha.

Wish that were possible for the console versions

The schedule makers in-game aren't kind to my A's just like in real life. I've got 3 20-game stretches (that's 60 games in 63 days) back-to-back-to-back. Not even a TRAVEL day dammit!

Slightly better than the schedule for my AA team, though. 32-game stretch, then a day off, followed by another 14 games.

MVP05

I would love to get a copy of MVP05 for the PC and update the rosters on it.  I still play it on the gamecube (gasp) and I have no desire to buy a new game (which would also require a new system at this point).

I also am interested in the MVP NCAA series of games and I have thought about picking up a cheap PS2 in order to play them.

The Show

I just got MLB 07 and I love it. It matches MVP 05 in my opinion

swore off baseball video games...

once EA lost their MLB license.  But that's just me.  Or probably not, really; there are lots of EA loyalists out there.  FIFA, Madden, and MVP were the holy trinity for me, in that order.  I pretty much only play FIFA these days, or Madden in Franchise mode, simply for the GMing capabilities...sim through the season, do the offseason/training camp, repeat....

www.????????????.com...the "launch" is coming soon...or grand opening in brick-and-mortar terms...I'll be all over the DLD the day it's ready.
