Open Thread: Spring Training Game 9
It's not just A's-Giants, it's Zito and Harden that are due to square off today (noon PST). Both are arguably "aces in name only," with Zito paid like one and often--but not consistently--performing like one, and Harden consistently performing like one--for the small portions of seasons he is healthy.
After the game, I'll weigh in with my take on the Kotsay situation. It's one of those rare topics where the present and future actually meet, because both now, and in years to come, these articles can be found under "back issues". Enjoy the game.

come back after starting up the car to defrost it and i am greeted with this.
What a great matchup
First the Wash homecoming, now Barry. I'll be monitoring AN this afternoon.
go A's !!
.. my cat just jumped on my shoulder, love her but it's tough to type 1-handed! .. {g} ..

No Zito
I can see why he wouldn't want to pitch against Harden. Link
No Zito-A's tale: The Giants play six games against the A's in spring training, starting today, and Barry Zito might not pitch in any of them. He was in line to face them today but said he has moved to a five-day spring rotation instead of the customary four. That means he will face Texas on Saturday and miss the A's on Sunday and Tuesday.
Furthermore, Zito said he does not figure to work any of the Bay Bridge exhibition games against Oakland because he will start the April 3 season opener.
Also, did you hear that some A's players drove Swish's monster truck onto the field yesterday Maybe they thought he needed it for a workout.

TeeHee!

I would love to hear the story behind this! And what is up with the tires being painted?
by BobbyCrosbysGirl on Mar 9, 2007 10:35 AM PST up reply actions
OMG! That is so funny!
Well, if he needed the incentive, I guess it was a good idea. It was very nice of the pitchers to help protect it a bit! Thanks for the info!
by BobbyCrosbysGirl on Mar 9, 2007 11:21 AM PST up reply actions
Pitchers?
Those guys protecting the truck are the pitchers?! The pitchers whose job it is to just point their fingers upwards when there's an infield pop-up?
tires
Yeah.
The pic on Nebraska's blog is really clear. Kinda heinous...
2wd?
between the tires and the "PA" guy saying that the truck is 2wd Swisher might need a personal advisor for all things cool. I nominate Rev Halofan.

Okay, that's the first thing I thought of.
A lift kit and roll bars? A "big ol'" truck like that... and it's two-wheel drive? Pshaw. [/hickness]
Is the back supposed to be lower than the front? What the hell has he been hauling?

I heard Harden/Loiza vs Ortiz
Hello from the Grapefruit League...baseball and fun in the sun.
And I really wish you all were here.
I think the matchup today is against Russ Ortiz...
I too was looking forward to seeing us beat Barry/s
here, but I guess that will have to wait.
I have not read posts/news from yesterday..but one of the best parts was seeing Wash and watching him and his old teammates greet each other...and the interactions between them during the game.
As you may know manager/coaches sit in folding chairs next to dugout... lots of smiles, and laughs and acknowledgements during the game with Texas.
Got to wish Wash lots of luck, except against us!
I'm gonna go look for Saint at the game.
I'll post pix when I get home.
Let's go Oakland!
Grapefruit League?
Are your really in AZ? Wait as long as you like, but those stubby trees with the prickly arms will never drop fruit at your feet.
It has A's pregame on now ..

We keep hitting into DPs ...
by Randy Bell on Mar 9, 2007 12:22 PM PST up reply actions
With a year of Harden healthy
what would be more common: 1-2-3 innings for Harden, or inning ending DPs for the offense slated to support him?
Giants radio is saying
they snuck behind a scout with a radar gun and Harden is throwing 95 mph.

by Randy Bell on Mar 9, 2007 12:28 PM PST up reply actions
Ditto
but I don't hate the team, just outside of Bonds/Zito they're not that interesting. But I could listen to their radio and TV guys broadcast a ping-pong match. Wish the A's could assemble such a team.

No coverage here in Auburn
And, like others, MLB is not working on my Intel Mac.
But I'll post any counter-intelligence I hear. Jon MIller has been talking about how the A's need to stay healthy, not much news there.

Breaking down the second:
1. Harden retires Feliz, a dead fastball hitter, on a third-pitch fastball.
2. After Buan complaining about the obstructed scoreboard, it's refreshing to hear KenKo, who pays actual attention to the game, and reports it correctly even when the scoreboard is wrong (1-2 count to Winn).
3. I know this is redundant, but I really, really like Rich Harden.
Stay Healthy Rich !!

Oh, and also:
Three bunt attempts in the past two innings, none of them successful -- in the second, Winn actually missed a bunt. And four Ks in three innings. And the shutout intact in spite of Perez muffing two plays in the same inning. Harden's stuff is filthy.

Halsey and Kennedy in the starting five? >Shivers<</p>
They better not be 15 under in May ..
.. like in '05, if they repeat that, Kotsay can forget about rushing his comeback, it won't matter !!!

I blame the World Baseball Classic

Injuries so far
to Kotsay, Duke, Crosby, Kielty, Loaiza, and Piazza, just a few weeks into spring training.

by Randy Bell on Mar 9, 2007 1:27 PM PST up reply actions
Oh really...
what amazing rotation do they have there?
they'll out score the Angles by about triple
I didnt say they have an amazing rotation.
I like their offense a LOT LOT more than Anaheim and I think Mccarthy will be better than expected. I hate the Angel offense and I wonder if Colon/Weaver/Escobar will stay healthy, not to mention K Rod. It is agaisnt the grain, but I think Texas has a better record this year than Anaheim.
Hell, the Cardinals won the Worls Series without an amazing rotation, there is pitching and offense too.
Now yer saying the Rangers are gonna win the...
World Series? Lol. I actually think that their defense will be much better than the Angels, now that Wash is the manager, and that might put them ahead. But without any solid pitching, like Carpenter, they will have to win a lot of slugfests. This is with no Matthews, no Mench, and no Carlos Lee.
A's tie it up !!

by BobbyCrosbysGirl on Mar 9, 2007 1:35 PM PST up reply actions
No he's just hung over
"Didn't feel right..."
...when he was warming up. So instead of telling anyone about it, he throws twenty breaking balls (so the radar gun can't pick up the low velocity on his fastball?) and gets pulled from the game by Larry Davis. Um. Didn't he learn his lesson last year about concealing possible injury? (Don't answer that. Please.)

how do you have 23 GIDP???
Aren't there only 27 outs per team? That would be 46....or are you combining the totals for both teams?
that was a joke
