Open Thread: Spring Training Game 9

It's not just A's-Giants, it's Zito and Harden that are due to square off today (noon PST). Both are arguably "aces in name only," with Zito paid like one and often--but not consistently--performing like one, and Harden consistently performing like one--for the small portions of seasons he is healthy.

After the game, I'll weigh in with my take on the Kotsay situation. It's one of those rare topics where the present and future actually meet, because both now, and in years to come, these articles can be found under "back issues". Enjoy the game.

No Zito

I can see why he wouldn't want to pitch against Harden. Link

No Zito-A's tale: The Giants play six games against the A's in spring training, starting today, and Barry Zito might not pitch in any of them. He was in line to face them today but said he has moved to a five-day spring rotation instead of the customary four. That means he will face Texas on Saturday and miss the A's on Sunday and Tuesday.
Furthermore, Zito said he does not figure to work any of the Bay Bridge exhibition games against Oakland because he will start the April 3 season opener.

Also, did you hear that some A's players drove Swish's monster truck onto the field yesterday Maybe they thought he needed it for a workout.

OMG! That is so funny!

Well, if he needed the incentive, I guess it was a good idea. It was very nice of the pitchers to help protect it a bit! Thanks for the info!

I heard Harden/Loiza vs Ortiz

Hello from the Grapefruit League...baseball and fun in the sun.
And I really wish you all were here.
I think the matchup today is against Russ Ortiz...
I too was looking forward to seeing us beat Barry/s
here, but I guess that will have to wait.

I have not read posts/news from yesterday..but one of the best parts was seeing Wash and watching him and his old teammates greet each other...and the interactions between them during the game.
As you may know manager/coaches sit in folding chairs next to dugout... lots of smiles, and laughs and acknowledgements during the game with Texas.
Got to wish Wash lots of luck, except against us!

I'm gonna go look for Saint at the game.
I'll post pix when I get home.
Let's go Oakland!

Breaking down the second:

    1. Harden retires Feliz, a dead fastball hitter, on a third-pitch fastball.
    2. After Buan complaining about the obstructed scoreboard, it's refreshing to hear KenKo, who pays actual attention to the game, and reports it correctly even when the scoreboard is wrong (1-2 count to Winn).
    3. I know this is redundant, but I really, really like Rich Harden.

I didnt say they have an amazing rotation.

I like their offense a LOT LOT more than Anaheim and I think Mccarthy will be better than expected.  I hate the Angel offense and I wonder if Colon/Weaver/Escobar will stay healthy, not to mention K Rod.  It is agaisnt the grain, but I think Texas has a better record this year than Anaheim.

Hell, the Cardinals won the Worls Series without an amazing rotation, there is pitching and offense too.

Bring back Hammer.

by OaktownPower on Mar 9, 2007 1:36 PM PST up reply actions

Now yer saying the Rangers are gonna win the...

World Series? Lol. I actually think that their defense will be much better than the Angels, now that Wash is the manager, and that might put them ahead. But without any solid pitching, like Carpenter, they will have to win a lot of slugfests. This is with no Matthews, no Mench, and no Carlos Lee.

"Didn't feel right..."

...when he was warming up.  So instead of telling anyone about it, he throws twenty breaking balls (so the radar gun can't pick up the low velocity on his fastball?) and gets pulled from the game by Larry Davis.  Um.  Didn't he learn his lesson last year about concealing possible injury?  (Don't answer that.  Please.)

Satisfying!

Here's hoping Loaiza "feels right" soon.

by Ray of Lite on Mar 9, 2007 2:55 PM PST reply actions

Gotta say...

...in spite of Loaiza (please say it's just a one-day bump in the road) and all the GIDPs (I counted twenty three), this was a great game.  Start with Harden dominating for his full allotment of innings, and wind up with an A's win, and I'm happy; it doesn't matter if the game means anything.

(Visiting Cubs fan)

by Loon from Left on Mar 9, 2007 2:55 PM PST reply actions

how do you have 23 GIDP???

Aren't there only 27 outs per team? That would be 46....or are you combining the totals for both teams?

And Kansas beat Oklahoma to advance to the semi finals of big 12 tourney.  Watched that game earlier on ESPN.  They carry all the basketball teams when it comes to college basketball.  Why can they not do the same when it comes to baseball???
