Open Thread: Spring Training Game 8
The A's send Danny Haren to the mound to face Vicente Padlla and the Texas Rangers. If the game was on TV, we'd be able to see Ron Washington managing a game. But alas, it's a meaningless spring training game so that will have to wait a bit longer.
One quick note, for the Sports4Kids effort, we are now at $2,390. Only about $1,100 away from where we need to be. If you haven't donated yet, you can still do so by sending money through PayPal to blez - at - athleticsnation - dot - com. Thanks so much to everyone who has already contributed.

I think Padilla
Is most likely to go crazy at the buffet and end up like Colon.
Distinct possibility.
He has a rep for hitting the bottle too hard, too. As long as he doesn't hit anyone today (yet another facet of his reputation)...

For spring training games in the future, just change the date and the three-letter team codes, which are listed in away/home order.

Only one game behind the Giants for first place! Oh, wouldn't it be great to see Wash win the Cactus Trophy (whatever that is) to kick off his career (before finishing 3rd or 4th in the AL West)?
cactus trophy...
That would be a bronze cactus? or??? :-)

Thus far, DJ is doing pretty bad
and Durazo is preforming.
Maybe we should go with Durazo at 1st Base. I mean, if he can put together even Hatteberg defense, then it may be well worth it.
More details, please
I can't listen to Gameday, but can follow the game here. Please give more details on what is happening.
How in the hell would a .300 hitter with 15HR,
and draw walks like Barton, have a hard time finding a job.

Heaven, because they don't know baseball.

You all listening to this BA guy?
Casey something?
He's ranking the A's prospects #s 10-1.
I missed 10-8, but now he's saying:
#7 Landon Powell
#6 Lansford
#5 Daric Barton
continued...
Did anyone catch 10-8?
10 was some young OF, Escalon, I think, 9 was
Sulentic, 8 was Cahill

.300 15HR bad for DH/1B?

by J Rod @ Athletics Nation on Mar 8, 2007 1:05 PM PST reply actions
buck is doing well
LF-stewart
CF-bradley
RF-buck
1B-swisher
???
by J Rod @ Athletics Nation on Mar 8, 2007 1:08 PM PST up reply actions
Could be
They might be able to do something like this;
C1 Kendall
1B Swisher
2B Ellis
3B Chavez
SS Crosby
LF Stewart
RF Buck
CF Bradley
DH Piazza
C2 Melhuse
SS Scutaro
OF Kielty
1B Johnson
That gives us 5 outfielders, counting Swisher, with Johnson ready to take 1st base if/when Swisher goes to the outfield. Kielty and Johnson can platoon as well when subbing.
This leaves Goleski off the roster, returned to the engines, and Perez is out of options (hell, he might even pass through waivers).
If/when Kotsay returns he could either be traded or Kielty or Stewart could be traded for the deadline.
He had 2 hits yesterday, and would have had
the tie scoring RBI
by theblackpearl on Mar 8, 2007 1:10 PM PST up reply actions
Those are
his only two of the spring.
2/18 with 6 K's and no BB's so far.
Beane (rightfully) doesn't pay much attention to spring training performances, but if Goleski continues to seem so overmatched against big league pitching I doubt that he'll make the team.

5 Daric Barton
4 Jermaine Mitchell
3 Kurt Suzuki
2 Marcus McBeth
1 Travis Buck
that is a pretty stupid order
who came up with this?
Baseball America's list
is here and looks nothing like that.
That's from Last December
We're listening to the BA guy on the Buancast atm.
what happened between december and march
to drop barton from 2 to 5?
Casey IS the guy who writes the A's notes
for Baseball America. He still works for BA. This was his list, not BA's list which relies on more input from Callis, Manuel et al.
I think one thing that might have dropped Barton was that even in winter ball where he did very well, he had almost no extra base hits.
and sulentic from 4 to 10
did he even play in the last couple months?
Sulentic
has a great ceiling and is miles away from it, considering that as another LF he has to hit the snot out of the ball to make it.
The top ten lists and top 100 list from BA is done by committee.
I think for the main BA contingent, they are not so sold on Lansford, Robnett, old reliever prospects, etc...
Casey Tefertiller
is his name. I don't know if he still writes for BA, but he apparently writes books about Wyatt Earp:
http://www.autographedtoyou.com/Case...
???
well, the guy USED to work for BA i think
i can understand why he wouldn't be working there anymore
by J Rod @ Athletics Nation on Mar 8, 2007 1:28 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah
That list is pretty stupid, and I'm sure BA is not too happy if this turd is going around intimating to people that he is representative of their opinions.
by BlameChannel53 on Mar 8, 2007 1:33 PM PST up reply actions
harsh
he does still write for BA
This was his list, and by showing all that love for Jermaine Mitchell, he did show some insight.
Look, much of what the rest of the BA guys write about our prospects comes from Casey first. What most of the rest of prospect people write about BA comes first from comments from BA.
At the time I wrote that comment
I didn't know that it was Casey that everyone was talking about. I actually
think Casey is a pretty bright guy, although I do still think his list is pretty
stupid. If he's doing it off his own subjective evaluation, however, I have
no problem with his rankings. My subjective rankings would probably be
pretty stupid looking as well, because I like a few of our guys a whole lot
more than objectively I should.
by BlameChannel53 on Mar 8, 2007 2:10 PM PST up reply actions
yep
there is a difference between the instituional or conservative outlook (what the general opinion would be through all of baseball), and our own personal take on it.
I cut Casey a lot of slack in part because he identified Ethier early on as being the most intriguing prospect from the 2003 draft. He was higher on Ethier and lower on everybody else than the consensus was at the time. He also tabbed McBeth as a viable conversion candidate way back then too.
My list would be different as well, but I have a California League centric point of view.
well said
by BlameChannel53 on Mar 8, 2007 3:00 PM PST up reply actions
Thanks Jakarta
for getting my back. I was trying to do everyone a favor by transcribing what I heard was a prospects report by a BA rep and I thought I was going to have murderous ANers showing up at my door for it. Maybe I should have known exactly who it was that was saying things that were apparently blasphemous before I typed the list.
If Buck's D really needs work
then I guess we won't be seeing him till later in the year.
In that case, it will probably look like;
1B Johnson
RF Swisher
CF Bradley
LF Stewart
C2 Melhuse
IF Scutaro
3B Perez
OF Kielty
and will anouncers please
stop butchering the pronounciation of "benoit"

javier herrera was on steroids?
i didn't know that
by J Rod @ Athletics Nation on Mar 8, 2007 1:23 PM PST reply actions
Indeed he was
Then Tommy John...
...who knows what will come of him?
He wasn't on steroids
he tested positive for a substance on the banned substances list, but it was not steroids, supposedly. One thing I really hate about the testing policy in MLB and other sports is that they don't specify what substance was detected. All banned substances are not equal, and Herrera was unfairly implicated by that positive test. In the NFL, Castillo from the Chargers was accused of being a juicer prior to the draft because he tested positive for a perfectly legal non-steroid substance that was a banned substance. The Olympics has a better system, where they identify the substance.
