Bud Selig is a liar and/or an idiot
So Bud thinks those of us who protest the exclusive deal with DirecTV are "ridiculous".
http://www.tvpredictions.com/bud0304...
Among his arguments is that there are hundreds of games on TBS, WGN, ESPN, and Fox. But how does that help me if I'm not a Braves, Cubs, White Sox, or Yankees/Red Sox fans (since that's basically who you see on ESPN and Fox)?
He also cites a report that "only 5,000" fans who currently get MLB Extra Innings will be excluded within the new deal. This is horsecrap. What he's saying is that the many other thousands of fans who have been getting EI on cable can switch to satellite. This is true, but he's a cynical pig with zero interest in fans for implying that it's not a significant investment to do so, and impractical for many of us.
I would have more respect for Selig if he came out and said "this is a great financial deal for MLB and it will drive customers to our MLB.tv product which is more lucrative for us." Instead he tries to portray it as being in some way good for the fans. Fewer games, less access, less exposure, more cost for fans. There's nothing in it for us.

Where is Comcast in all of this?
Does Comcast even care? I don't ever remember hearing anything from them about this deal.
As for Selig and the DirecTV CEO.... only 5000 current Comcast customers w/ MLB Extra Innings cannot get DirectTV???? That's a joke.
Yea, they care....
Cable came to MLB with an offer, but MLB wanted a guarantee that the MLB Channel would be offered as part of a regular subscription package like DirecTV is doing. The cable companies wouldnt guarantee that. Seems like that was sticking point between MLB and Cable.

Yes, I read that as well
Clearly it's a fake sticking point. They WANT less traffic on EI in order to boost MLB.tv.
absolute falsehood
thats just so bad, I wonder who believes that. Well, he was a used car salesman after all so it's no surprise.
Right on
Many people also have multiple services with their cable companies (Internet, phone)...essentially he thinks everyone will want to just switch over everything just for Extra Innings. Selig simply has no clue.
And you just watch DirecTV hike the prices for Extra Innings should this deal go through. I'd like to know how good that is for the consumer.

You, for one ...
What good is one to Bud ?
Clearly you need to develop multiple personalities to get some traction here.

Eh.
You live here in Sacramento. You're f#$%ed regardless.
The thing that pisses me off the most
Is that no matter what, with EI or MLB.com, either way Home A's games get blacked out, and I find that fuckin absurd. For 200 plus dollars, and you still can't purchase what you want. How much longer do we have to put up with this Jackass??? Fuck Selig.

Keep in mind though...
...that Extra Innings isn't meant for folks who live in the Bay Area to see A's games...they're for us Non-Resident A's Fans or residents who want to see other games. I'm sure you'll be able to see the A's dozens more times than I will this season if this deal goes through (and if I decide not to get MLB.tv).
I understand the need for blackouts (to protect local broadcast rightsholders, in the A's case FSN Bay Area and Channel 36). That said, the blackout rules are beyond ridiculous -- like if FSN Bay Area or Channel 36 DOESN'T have the game...or why I get blacked out of the Washington Nationals even though I'm 4 1/2 hours from D.C. and there is no local TV or even radio for the Nats. But that's a wholly different issue.
by FormerHuntsvilleStar on Mar 6, 2007 5:37 PM PST up reply actions
This is correct
I live in Iowa and get MLB EI primarily to watch A's games. But, under MLB's dumb-ass territorial rules, I am in the territory of SIX teams!!!... the Twins, Royals, Cardinals, Brewers, Cubs, and White Sox... 20% of all the teams in MLB. Nevermind that the closest one is a 5 hour drive away and aren't really "local" at all. If I want to see A's games when they play one of these teams I also have to buy DirecTV's sports package which costs an additional $12/mo.
They're losing a customer here
As I've said before, I live in Oakland so Extra Innings is a luxury for me. When I'm not watching the A's I want to see the Rangers, Angels and Mariners. I don't give a rat's ass about Barry Bonds.
As recently as a week ago there seemed to be hope that MLB would re-think the DirecTV exclusivity, but that appears to have evaporated.
So MLB thinks I should either (a) jump through a hoop to purchase the product I want, namely by switching from Comcast to DirecTV, or (b) buy a product I don't really want, MLB.TV. There is no reason why I couldn't switch to DirecTV, except that my landlady probably wouldn't like the dish (but the law is on my side there). I really resent being deprived of consumer choice and bullied into subscribing to DirecTV, though. I think I will be going with (c) leaving the $179 (or whatever the DirecTV monopolist chooses to charge) in my bank account. I do have XM so at least I have access to the radio broadcasts. I might consider subscribing to MLB.TV for the month of September.
My sympathies to the NRAFs who don't have the options that I do.

Doesn't affect me in Canada, but I cancelled too.
No MLB.com subscriptions for me this year.
I'll wait for highlights before I'll finance this kind of garbola.
How 'bout...
Bud Selig is a lyin' idiot, or, an idiotic liar??? Don't forget, folks, he is a friend of Wolff...remember, assholes stick together.
That's unfair to Wolff.
I doubt they play bridge together, y'know?
His dealing with Selig is kind of part of the gig, not a choice.
Lew, Bud, and Jerry Reinsdorf
were fraternity brothers together in Madison WI. So Wolff’s closeness with Bud is very much by choice...but of course it helps his business side too. The Wolffish ownership group was OK'd by MLB with nearly unprecedented speed, largely (I believe) because Selig's bond with Wolff let him trust Wolff's promise not to publically challenge the territorial rights issue.

DirecTV is owned by Murdoch
I wouldn't give them a dime, no matter what programming they have.
"
You can get rid of the "or" in the title...
but he forgot to add,
and an ASS, and an $#^$&#....and a &$!%$%....$!%^#%....$#%&^*@....!@#$%^&....et cetera
yeah...
that could be an entire diary on Selig, really.
What about
people who live in apartments that won't let you get a dish like me!
