LOAIZA TO DL, GAUDIN TO BE 5TH STARTER?untitled diary

AP is reporting that Bob Garen thinks Esteban Loaize will be on the Dl to start the season due to a stiff right shoulder.  This will move Kennedy into the 4th. position and Chad Gaudin would be the first consideration for the 5th. spot.

Here's the double-whammy:
Losing Gaudin from the bullpen while throwing two back-back-end starters (Kennedy/Gaudin) in the rotation means more need for reliever innings--and Gaudin lost from the reliever mix.

It makes you wonder if the A's can still afford the luxury of Jay Marshall as one of their 7 relievers. Marshall presents another double-whammy: he's a short-reliever and he's not someone who figures to get many meaningful innings.

Yet the A's will have more need for longer relief outings and more meaningful relief innings.

try to yank Chan Ho Park from the Mets

he was sent to the minors.  Try to get Chan Ho and Heilman for Halsey and Calero or something.  Heck, throw in Julio Franco in there too and send Todd Walker their way to play second

Why would Chan Ho Park
decide to pitch well now? Has the last 10 years of consistently being awful been a ploy to lull the league into a false sense of security?

Because it's working.

well obviously park isn't going to pitch well

unless he has an incentive to do so, and he doesn't in the minors.  let's trade for park and then sign him to a $65 million contract.

Now that makes sense!
I can't see any downside--with Park flanked by guys like Teixeira, Blalock, and Michael Young, we should have plenty of pitching.

If we do send Gaudin to the rotation

that means that we can try to grab Francisco Rosario from the BlueJays in a very simular deal to the Gaudin deal. Rosario's situation is very simular to Gaudin's last year. Good young arm, going to be left off the team, with the BlueJays.

If we acquired Rosario and moved Gaudin to the roation, we could have a pitching staff of:

Haren
Blanton
Harden
Gaudin
Kennedy

Street
Duchscherer
Calero
Embree
Rosario
Witasick
Marshall

Rosario was a starter in the minors, so he can go multible innings.

And when Loaiza gets back, and one of Kennedy or Gaudin is moved back to the pen (whomever is doing worse, I suppose), we then try to dump Witasick and have a staff of:

RHP Dan Haren
RHP Joe Blanton
RHP Rich Harden
RHP Esteban Loaiza
LHP Joe Kennedy

RHP Huston Street
RHP Justin Duchscherer
RHP Kiko Calero
RHP Chad Gaudin
LHP Alan Embree
RHP Francisco Rosario
LHP Jay Marshall

thats a damn good bullpen!

You like Rosario? He's 26...that scares me off a little. Gaudin was younger.
I think a pitcher is what he's going to be by age 26, and Rosario got kinda blown up in the bigs last year.

I think the A's are still gonna be fine with Gaudin in the rotation, Marshall in the pen too.

It opens up a spot for DiNardo in the pen.

I prefer Rosario Dawson

Rosario is 26

But he still has some upside.  He has had injuries and has had some struggles, but he has legitimately good "stuff" and could be a good pickup if the A's brain trust see something in him.

what about mike mitchell?

he's looked good this spring

though yeah,he can't do long releif,so halsey or dinardo would be more likely options
