Open Thread: Spring Training Game 27
Cactus League action is wrapping up and all eyes figure to be on Joe Kennedy in his final chance to prove he can get hitters out. 9.2 innings of 31 hit ball have made people understandably nervous, but Kennedy remains--if by default--the front runner to start the regular season's fifth game. You could say that for the second time, a Nation is turning its lonely eyes to a Joe. So you can bet that if the A's lose 1-0 today, we'll all be breaking out the champagne.

"on some shrimp"
Like the game of adding "between the sheets" to the end of fortune cookie sayings, you could start adding "on some shrimp" to anagrams just for the hell of it...
it's not a pun.
It's a palindrome on some shrimp.
And on that subject...
It really bothers me that the word "palindrome" is not a palindrome. They should have called it something else, like a palinilap or something.
That's it
We have to start a campaign to rename the word. In fact:
I, Philip Christy of Athletics Nation, hereby declare the word "Palindrome," to be henceforth renamed as the word "Palinilap"; and so, from this date forward, whenever the old word "Palindrome" is to be used, it will be replaced by the word "Palinilap." The use of the word "Palindrome" will only be used to refer to the old spelling and pronunciation of the word "Palinilap."

Jeez
I knew his ERA is atrocious, but I didn't realize that Kennedy allowed 31 friggin hits in 9.2 innings.

Go Go Big Joe!
Since the A's have sent Windsor To Triple-A I guess they are dead-set on trying Kennedy for a couple starts to begin the season, let's hope he turns it around ..

Why not start Gaudin?
Conjecture, but I can think of several things:
- moving Gaudin to starter and Joe_K back to the bullpen leaves possibly three lefties in the pen {Kennedy, Embree, and either Halsey or Marshall}
- Gaudin's control issues are still a question-mark
- Gaudin is like Kennedy in that he has been effective from the pen but is an "unknown" as starter
by Randy Bell on Mar 27, 2007 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions
The answer is obvious baseballgirl:
because he started yesterday!
OH i agree with BBG ..
.. that Kennedy has been awful .. I just don't know if we have any better options right now, other than making a trade and getting someone from outside ..

HR
At some point earlier this spring, there was distress due to the A's being near the bottom in terms of team HRs. Well, after yesterday's game, we are now tied with the Yankees for spring training home runs. I think that if we can keep up with NYY for team home runs all season, then we'll be doing pretty well.
And just in case you thought this has any predictive value, the team with the most spring HRs is the offensive juggernaut from San Diego.
Precisely ..
.. ST results don't seem to mean much, or you can't conclude too much from them ..
by Randy Bell on Mar 27, 2007 11:03 AM PDT up reply actions
Whoa, wait...
They play GAMES in Spring Training?! I thought you just had nothing to do for three hours a day, so you made it up... ;)
TeeHee, the A's games - Outcome determined by ..
.. later innings .. with Charles Thomas and Brown, Merloni, Perez, Goleski, Bocachica, Barton, Buck, Suzuki, Ledee, ... well granted that Ruby, Barton and Buck were/are pretty good but .. most ST games are determined by the prospects and non-roster invitees .. folks the average A's fan may not know or even have heard of ...
by Randy Bell on Mar 27, 2007 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions
Kennedy was a good fit in the 'pen last year.
But I have never liked him as a starter. To quote one of may favorite Bill King adjectives, Kennedy's career numbers are "pedestrian."
CAREER:
W L ERA
39 52 4.79
I just don't see him getting through the batting order the second time around...Something he clearly never had to deal with as a reliever. I think the numbers bear this out.
2006 in relief
W L ERA
4 1 2.31
Agree - Joe_K is definitely better in the pen ..
.. problem is that Beane signed Embree to replace Kennedy in the pen, so clearly our GM wants to try Kennedy as starter ..

Hey, whatever makes the idea more palatable.
In that case...
Joe Kennedy: fifth starter on some shrimp with a delightfully tangy cocktail sauce, served on a bed of arugula with your choice of two sides (no substitutions please).
I'm allergic to shrimp
I guess that means I can't watch Kennedy's starts. Which, come to think of it, might not be a bad idea.
