DLD 3/26/07: I couldn't sleep
Oh man, for some reason I haven't been able to sleep tonight. Apparently the beer I had at late night happy hour didn't sit well with my stomach. Oh well, on we go...

Yesterday's game
In a recap of yesterday's game, Antonio Perez continues to hit like the ball owes him money. Although, in unrelated news:
Up next: Miguel Batista takes the hill on Monday as the M's travel to Surprise, Ariz., for a game with the Rangers. The A's host the Rockies with Chad Gaudin making the start.
Yes. That's right. Chad M'Fin Gaudin will get a start.
Now, I know this was already touched upon in the game thread, and as OaktownMagical07 astutely noted, MGMT is looking to stretch out the relievers. But maybe (?) the team is deciding to stretch out DiNardo and Gaudin and give them one last shot for Joe's job?
Also, the daily recap piece has a bunch of useful information, such as:
- Brad Halsey has an option left
- Jay Marshall is still in serious contention to make the team
- Daric Barton, Ron Flores, Jeremy Brown and Hiram MouthLady will not be making the team, as they were all either optioned to triple A (Brown/Flores) or assigned to minor league camp (mouthlady/Barton).
- Ricky Ledee has been cut (gasp!)
- Brad Halsey has an option left
- Harden threw 90+ pitches in 6 shutout innings in an intrasquad game
- Did I mention, Brad Halsey has an option?!?
Another piece on Windsor's game
Susan Slusser seems to think Marshall's got a good shot at making the team
My other, non-AN addiction
And, Happy Birthday to:
- Kiera Knightley (her 21st!), actress

- Amy Smart, actress
- Michael Peca, hockey player
- James Iha, guitarist, co-founder of the Smashing Pumpkins
- Kenny Chesney, country singer
- John Stockton, passer extraordinare, teammate of Karl Malone
- Marcus Allen, running back, heisman winner at USC
- Stephen Victor Tallarico, AKA Steven Tyler, lead singer of Aerosmith
- Diana Ross, singer
- Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the house
- James Caan, actor
- Leonard Nimoy, AKA Spock
- Sandra Day O'Connor, first female supreme court justice

Roster's shaping up.
From your Slusser article, it sounds like the A's are set on carrying 12 pitchers, which is surprising, since we're also carrying three catchers. Slusser is clear, however, that Gaudin is NOT being given a chance to start:
Chad Gaudin will start today and throw 45 to 50 pitches; the right-handed reliever is not being stretched out to potentially start, however, according to A's sources. Marshall will follow Gaudin and also will throw 45 or so pitches. Jay Witasick is expected to be bumped up near 50 pitches soon.
Geren said the increased pitch counts will give the A's more options. "This spring has been all about versatility," he said.
Not only do the A's like Marshall, but they also would have to offer him back to the White Sox if he does not remain on the 25-man roster all season. Lefty Brad Halsey has an option remaining and if he opens the season at Triple-A Sacramento, he would be available if the A's needed an emergency starter. Lefty Lenny DiNardo, who also has been stretched out to possibly start and who has pitched well this spring, has two options remaining.
That makes the bench Kielty, Melhuse, Scutaro, and Perez.
I think the A's are paying lip service to the idea of having someone other than Kennedy in the fifth starter role. He'll have to get absolutely lit up (again) on Tuesday for that to happen.

I think Gaudin and DiNardo
are being considered for spot starting or perhaps even as the fifth starter -- but not to start the season. Kennedy will still be given a chance, but not forever.

So Marshall has a good shot at making the team, and I guess DiNardo will be there as well.
How about Goleski? Is he going to be around still?

Do not think DiNardo is on 40 man roster;
Goleski is being given another week to impress or else??? Do not know if club will trade for his rights or not... DiNardo to AAA I believe along possibly with Halsey due to numbers game...

Goleski / Marshall
Goleski will have to clear waivers before being sent back to the Indians (10 Days). If Goleski clear waivers, then the A's can offer up a trade to the Indians.
As for Marshall, it's probably not a bad idea to see how he handles 1+ Innings. During the season, I expect we'll only see him for 1 or 2 lefties in games where Embree can't go.

That reminds me of a dream I once had ...
I was in some Wild West town with a beat-up combination bar/hotel. Way out in the field nearby, there's a guy, trou dropped, molesting a sheep. I went into the the bar and there's a peg-legged Nico wistfully looking out the window, abusing himself.
I ask the bartender 'what kinda screwed-up town is this? This some pervy molesting a sheep, and a peg-legged man playing with himself?!'
The bartender didn't look up, he just replied, "Give him a break ... that's Nico, a one-legged man can't catch a sheep!"

Slusser reported the A's were NOT considering
Gaudin as a possible starter BEFORE he pitched yesterday. Now today another Chron article -- after the game -- claims the A's wanted to see how he would fare as a starter, and that they think he is versatile enough to be a spot starter:
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cg...
Mr. Kennedy is certainly the opening no.5 starter. But I don't believe they will let him stay there if he doesn't perform at least to average once the season starts.
