Colby Lewis insurance
Okay, a cast off from the horrendous staff of the Nats, I like the signing. The A's signed Colby Lewis to a minor league contract. He's reporting to the Rivercats, so I don't know if its diary-worthy. But, considering he's 6'4" and 230 and 27 years old, I think his signing points to that he's not a prospect and yet another live arm project.

Combining all those numbers,
he's a prospect to eat Blanton, but that's about it.
Maybe the A's feel "27 years old" is the undervalued commodity right now...

that age + A's training staff
= all-too-likely death for Colby Lewis...well, maybe if he was just a little bit better at his craft, anyway.
Who's next, by the way, Tim Redding?

Had rotator cuff surgery in 2004
Link to lengthy breakdown of Lewis' career from a Nats blogger. Two pitch-pitcher with a low 90s fastball at least pre-operation, lets see if we can teach him to throw sidearm or something to regain his former potential.

Sounds like
a candidate for the bullpen. He has had very little success as a starter in the majors, but if he has at least 2 good pitches he can make it in the 'pen. Either Beane is seriously desperate or he's thinking this guy's future is as a reliever.

2 things to like about signing Mr. Lewis
- Last year's Rivercats rotation included two 30 year old pitchers who combined have less big league time than Colby Lewis.
- Colby Lewis pitched well against the A's when he was with Texas.

Forgot to mention
The A's were interested in signing Lewis to a minor league contract at the start of FA but lost out to Washington. So this is a signing the A's have been trying to accomplish for a long time.

nationals
they might as well hold open tryouts at this point...let's face it, Colby Lewis' confidence had to take a hit when he couldn't make that squad of castoffs.
