Open Thread - Spring Training Games 18 & 19
Danny Haren and Jason Windsor take on the Angels at home and the D-backs on the road in today's split-squad action.
I think back fondly on the days when I didn't think Windsor should be a starting pitcher, but that was before I really considered his competition. I hope he throws a no-hitter.
I'm personally excited about Haren's season; I think he flies under the radar a lot, but I can see him being a huge part of our year. Despite what we have going on in the back-end of our rotation, our 1, 2 punch at the front could be one of the best in the league, and it should be fun to watch.
Another day closer to the start of the season!
Let's go OAK-LAND!

I agree that Haren
Good article on Haren in today's Chronicle sports section about his off-season regimen and determination--definitely worth checking out.
My signs at the A's/Angels game
4 games over, $40 million under
You don't think as a team, you don't play as a team, you don't even LOSE as a team.
There's a thing called "TALENT." They don't have it.
and last but not least....
You've got STEROIDS with you RIGHT NOW
say hi if you see me!
Hmm...
Garrett Anderson too ..
.. he is older but reputed to be healthy this spring .. I still remember the year he won the Home Run Derby in the All Stars game, then {I think IIRC} won the MVP ..
by Randy Bell on Mar 18, 2007 12:08 PM PDT up reply actions
I will eat my A's hat
if Anderson misses less than 20 games and reaches his career OPS of .800
I'd like the Angels a lot more
if they had Adrian Brody on the squad.
Have fun at the game.
Here in Phoenix...
We're debating whether we should show up to the ballpark in the second inning, to try and prevent a rerun of the last two days. Do you think Danny Haren really wants to follow in the footsteps of Joe Blanton and Joe Kennedy?
Or is it "A Joe Thing" and Dan is in the clear?
Noooo, heck noooo .. {g} ..
Do you think Danny Haren really wants to follow in the footsteps of Joe Blanton and Joe Kennedy?

It could be a "bad pitcher" thing,
Or ... is it the heat?
Check the front page of the Drudge Report
WINTER RECORD SMASHED: 99 DEGREES IN PHOENIX
It's not the heat,
am here and was thinkin the same after fri/sat
but then ran my mouth that Danny needed to have a 123 5th and get out with a perfect outing. And I think you saw the bombs afterward. BLAME ME!!!!

Anyone listening to Lurie?
He had Chuck Cottier (scout for the Dodgers) on misunderstanding statistics and lauding Eckstein for his superior sliding ability.
Yes I heard that ..

P.S. You know who doesn't have any social security? Mindi. And she shouldn't, either, after what she posted on MySpace last night.
Nearly 50 players still in camp,
Melhuse batting #5 with 067 average
in ST there's something to be said for a sense of humor.
fosse said
that haren is the opening day starter and that harden will be the A's home opener starter.
that means harden is the #3 pitcher in the rotation??
Go Haren!
and Windsor too!
Looks like the Angel's "B" team, Haren should own these guys.
I can see why they'd do that
since in the beginning, it won't matter THAT much who pitches when.
But that would mean that the schedule would go;
Haren @ Mariners
Loaiza @ Mariners
Harden @ Mariners
Blanton @ Angels
5th Starter @ Angels
Haren @ Angels
Loaiza @ Angels

Blanton v WhiteSox

Sure but rbi's are 11-3 for Swish, we could get
.270 from Barton.
by theblackpearl on Mar 18, 2007 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions
but .270 from DJ is better
than .270 from barton, because .270 from barton now means one less year of .315 from barton later on.
I agree
by Threepwood XX on Mar 18, 2007 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions
By the time Barton is Arby eligible, after his
first contract takes away his first 2 years of arby, the A's will either be spending new stadium money.
by theblackpearl on Mar 18, 2007 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions
scratches head
I think he means ..
.. if Barton played in the majors this year and hit .270, that would be one less year before free agency later on in his mlb career when he might be hitting over .300
by Randy Bell on Mar 18, 2007 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions
But Beane said as soon as the first brick is laid
he can start spending extra money, so if Barton came up a year early, he won't automatically be going to another team once he is established.
by theblackpearl on Mar 18, 2007 2:41 PM PDT up reply actions
It would still be one extra cheap year
And they are not going to be spending very much more money. Barton has 0 chance of of making the team in April, and that is as it should be.
plus i think he needs playing time in AAA

if Kennedy had a good year
and was a Type A or B Free Agent, that means a draft pick, ideally.
But here's the thing-he is more likely to be a Type A FA if he is a reliever than a starter, because he could be a 2.00 ERA Reliever, but will likely be a 5.00 ERA Starter. I think he falls under that Gagne/Rivera type of pitcher. The guy who sucks as a starter, but if you throw him in short bursts all out, he's very effective. I think Gaudin is the same way. Duchscherer maybe too.

Great start and great finish to the game
We just got back from today's 9th inning thriller against the Angels.
- Haren pitched well until he gave up the back to back homers in the fifth. I believe that occured because somebody on AN (you know who you are) said he had a no-hitter going. Kids...
- We finally had a lead! Danny Putnam gave us our first lead of the trip with a 2-run double, and he had three hits on the day. Good show.
- The A's don't need the long ball to win. They got their timely hits and were hitting the ball hard all game Line drives, and shots past the gloves of outstretched fielders were the norm. The 9th inning bunt by Suzuki worked out, with hindsight being 20-20.
- With Mike Piazza looming in the on-deck circle, we were just praying that Robbnet wouldn't GIDP. Even a strikeout would have been fine, but he nailed a shot to the gap which scored two. He ran hard to third, as if he were trying for the triple, but a double would do the trick just fine.
A's win! Huston Street came in and vultured the victory in a 9th inning cameo as well. Good stuff.
Don't forget Kiko-C getting out of jam in 8th
.. if he doesn't do that, no rally win in the 9th .. thanks for your nice onsite report! :)
by Randy Bell on Mar 18, 2007 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions
He did get out of the jam
When watching, I didn't see that as his excellent pitching any more than standard good fielding. Furmaniak air mailed a toss to second to get the runners aboard, and Calero certainly worked out of it, but it was a team effort. I don't remember three straight K's, for example.
Well, after being put in
Not a vulture...
...unless you give up the lead yourself. It's a bullpen win, but Street earned it. (Compare: Dotel, Rincon, Witasick)

Thanks for all those who did game posts
Enjoyed reading the events of the game at the end of a hectic day. And it is great when the A's WIN TWO GAMES IN ONE DAY.
The key to this victory was obviously...
...the "Let's go OAK-LAND!" chants that fueled the 9th inning rally, inspired by BBG's tome first above.
I think the vast majority of those still in attendance were we auslanders, rather than the locals who seem pretty baseball savvy, but don't know customs, and really don't care who wins. So the whole atmosphere is pretty listless, esp on a sultry day in the desert.
The cheer caught on once started, and the kids who won it got a small taste of a home game.
