Around SBN: Keith Hernandez Reacts To Gary Carter's Passing

Open Thread - Spring Training Games 18 & 19

Danny Haren and Jason Windsor take on the Angels at home and the D-backs on the road in today's split-squad action.

I think back fondly on the days when I didn't think Windsor should be a starting pitcher, but that was before I really considered his competition. I hope he throws a no-hitter.

I'm personally excited about Haren's season; I think he flies under the radar a lot, but I can see him being a huge part of our year. Despite what we have going on in the back-end of our rotation, our 1, 2 punch at the front could be one of the best in the league, and it should be fun to watch.

Another day closer to the start of the season!

Let's go OAK-LAND!

I agree that Haren
has a chance to be very, very good, but I'm wondering how much he is "under the radar" anymore. Seems like around the league he is acknowledged as having the ceiling of a #1 and the makings of a #2 right now (both of which I would agree with).

Good article on Haren in today's Chronicle sports section about his off-season regimen and determination--definitely worth checking out.

My signs at the A's/Angels game

4 games over, $40 million under

You don't think as a team, you don't play as a team, you don't even LOSE as a team.

There's a thing called "TALENT."  They don't have it.

and last but not least....

You've got STEROIDS with you RIGHT NOW

First one is good

2nd and 3rd one is bad.

4th one is something that A's fans can't say.

Hmm...
I think Vlad, K-Rod, Shields, and the starting rotation might have a legitimate beef with the "no talent" one. But the first one is pretty safe.

Here in Phoenix...

We're debating whether we should show up to the ballpark in the second inning, to try and prevent a rerun of the last two days. Do you think Danny Haren really wants to follow in the footsteps of Joe Blanton and Joe Kennedy?

Or is it "A Joe Thing" and Dan is in the clear?

It could be a "bad pitcher" thing,
as pitchers named Joe are not our finest. If you attend the first inning and Haren gives up 4-5 runs before getting an out, I will definitely have to conclude that the problem is strictly louismg. But go ahead and attend, and then when Haren navigates the 1st without incident we'll just be left to debate whether it's a "Joe thing" or a "not in great shape, not a great pitcher" thing.

This could actually be a blessing in disguise for the A's.  I'd much rather have Windsor starting this year for the A's with his 6-years or club ownership, then Kennedy who will take the cash and run if he has a good year.

by Threepwood XX on Mar 18, 2007 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions

if Kennedy had a good year

and was a Type A or B Free Agent, that means a draft pick, ideally.

But here's the thing-he is more likely to be a Type A FA if he is a reliever than a starter, because he could be a 2.00 ERA Reliever, but will likely be a 5.00 ERA Starter. I think he falls under that Gagne/Rivera type of pitcher. The guy who sucks as a starter, but if you throw him in short bursts all out, he's very effective. I think Gaudin is the same way. Duchscherer maybe too.

Single ties it, an IBB puts the winning run on base.

OK...As I'm typing this, single doesn't tie it, but...Still...

I don't care if it's ST or in the alley behind the Applebees.  Also nice to see Street go an innining w/o a hit or a bb.

To me, the 9th inning shows
why the bunt can be important not just in playing for "one run". If Suzuki bounces into a DP (like we did 3 times earlier today), the spine of the rally is killed. Well managed, well executed, great hitting by da kids...A satisfying win!

Great start and great finish to the game

We just got back from today's 9th inning thriller against the Angels.

  • Haren pitched well until he gave up the back to back homers in the fifth. I believe that occured because somebody on AN (you know who you are) said he had a no-hitter going. Kids...
  • We finally had a lead! Danny Putnam gave us our first lead of the trip with a 2-run double, and he had three hits on the day. Good show.
  • The A's don't need the long ball to win. They got their timely hits and were hitting the ball hard all game Line drives, and shots past the gloves of outstretched fielders were the norm. The 9th inning bunt by Suzuki worked out, with hindsight being 20-20.
  • With Mike Piazza looming in the on-deck circle, we were just praying that Robbnet wouldn't GIDP. Even a strikeout would have been fine, but he nailed a shot to the gap which scored two. He ran hard to third, as if he were trying for the triple, but a double would do the trick just fine.

A's win! Huston Street came in and vultured the victory in a 9th inning cameo as well. Good stuff.

Don't forget Kiko-C getting out of jam in 8th

.. if he doesn't do that, no rally win in the 9th .. thanks for your nice onsite report! :)

by Randy Bell on Mar 18, 2007 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

He did get out of the jam

When watching, I didn't see that as his excellent pitching any more than standard good fielding. Furmaniak air mailed a toss to second to get the runners aboard, and Calero certainly worked out of it, but it was a team effort. I don't remember three straight K's, for example.

Well, after being put in
a bad situation by poor defense, Calero didn't allow the ball to leave the infield: grounder to third, pop up, strikeout. That's good pitching in my book.

Not a vulture...

...unless you give up the lead yourself.  It's a bullpen win, but Street earned it.  (Compare: Dotel, Rincon, Witasick)

Thanks for all those who did game posts

Enjoyed reading the events of the game at the end of a hectic day.  And it is great when the A's WIN TWO GAMES IN ONE DAY.

Charlie Brown GO A'S WIN

by Charlie Brown on Mar 18, 2007 7:51 PM PDT reply actions

but I will say this, the A's lack of power

especially in Spring Training in Arizona, where the ball can be tapped over the fence, disturbs me.

by Zonis on Mar 18, 2007 8:52 PM PDT reply actions

The key to this victory was obviously...

...the "Let's go OAK-LAND!" chants that fueled the 9th inning rally, inspired by BBG's tome first above.

I think the vast majority of those still in attendance were we auslanders, rather than the locals who seem pretty baseball savvy, but don't know customs, and really don't care who wins.  So the whole atmosphere is pretty listless, esp on a sultry day in the desert.

The cheer caught on once started, and the kids who won it got a small taste of a home game.
