Harang gets four-year, $36.5M deal from Reds

The Reds locked up another former Athletic today..

Harang made out pretty well.

I always liked Harang as was a bit surprised when we traded him a few years back for Jose Guillen, who we rented for a few months.

The Reds now have Hatteberg, Saarloos, Harang and the 1990 World Series.

I'll never forget
Harang's first game at the Coli. Roy Steele introduced him before the game like an announcer would introduce a boxer. He gave his height and weight. I was near the bullpen and he had quite an expression on his face in reaction... Good times.

I was there
I remember the call as well.  He referred to Harang as "The Keeper of the Budding Staff".  I always thought that was great.

iIremember that game
he was pretty awesome.  it was kind of a shame it was a bit short-lived due to the league figuring him out.  I would think that is why he was traded...he's an allright pitched in the NL, but would be pretty average to below average over here.  But good luck to him.

"he's an allright pitched in the NL, but would be pretty average to below average over here."

You gotta be kidding me.  Harang was one of the better pitchers in the NL last year and that is not because of the league he pitches in.  Or are Brandon Webb, Roy Oswalt and Co. only good because they pitch in the NL?

Harang's game is on a whole new level.  His rookie year in Oakland, he walked 45 guys in 78 innings.  This past year, he walked 56 guys in 234 innings.

He led the entire NL in strikeouts last year.

The guy has been a good pitcher for a couple of years.  He wouldn't be below average and he is definitely worth what he's getting paid.

This was just one of those bad moves by Billy Beane, and yes, he does make them from time to time.

It might sound like a lot of money, but
it's not even "Ted Lilly" or "Gil Meche" money in the current marketplace.
And looking at the past couple seasons, he's done better than either of those two. Especially this past year.
I say good for him, and probably good for the Reds too, who've had such a hard time getting and retaining decent pitching these past few years.
Not great for the marketplace overall, or at least for our Oakland Athletics, though, I'll grant you...

Harang
I went to 8 Reds games last year and saw Harang in 6 of them.  He's gotten to be a very reliable pitcher and beat Oswalt and Carpenter last year.  I'd say as of today, Harang on the A's would be the #2 starter behind Harden.

Another shocked by amount of the contract
Did not realize that he was that good.  Good luck to him in fulfilling the expectations being placed upon him.
