Bobby Kielty injured and out up to six weeks

Susan Slusser of SF Gate and the Drumbeat site reporting that Bobby Kielty has torn something in his left knee and will require surgery and be out from 3 to 6 weeks following that surgery.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/indexn?blogid=21

That will bring into play possibly another outfield slot to be filled initially this season; hopefully a slot and more opportunity for Ryan Goleski to make the team out of spring training.  Take advantage of this opening Mike Goleski.

GO A'S...  AND WIN THIS YEAR.

Kielty
Kielty better get ready for a long "rehab" stint in AAA, alas, Jay Witasick in 2006.

This pretty much assures that Goleski is going to be on the MLB Roster on Opening Day.

I really hope this is the worst news we get this Spring Training.

Sad Clown
bad timing for a injury that requires surgery since Kielty is a free agent this offseason.

Yes!
I mean...no! Seriously, that sucks for him on a personal level. He was our 2nd best AAAA hitter.

Unsurprisingly..
..Kielty's knee is better on the right side than the left.

arthroscopic surgery
is pretty minor - i dunno if that's what witasik had, i thought his was a bit more major with the turning of his ankle. anyhow, it's just a small poke in the skin, i'm not even sure if you need more than one or two stiches. I had it when I was 12, and that was the case then, so it's probably improved a bit in the last couple of decades.

Witasick
Witasick rolled/sprained his ankle last season.  He didn't require surgery.

In a previous post, I said that Kielty should get used to AAA.  If things happen to go according to plan (Keeping Goleski on the 25-Man Roster.  Stewart playing everyday LF).  Kielty will be "rehabing" his knee in Sacramento for the maximum amount of days (15-Day DL + 20 Days).

Last Season, Witasick could have been called up sooner, but there wasn't a spot for him on the 25-Man Roster.  So, they kept him in Sacto. unit September call-ups.

Can/Should the A's put Kielty on the 60-Day DL, thus, opening up a spot on the 40-Man Roster?

<hand-cranks conspiracy engine>
Billy: OK, Bobby, you've got a choice -- you can either accept yet another career- and FA-contract-decimating demotion to Sacto, or you can 'voluntarily' accept some elective 'surgery.' Shit, I just talked with Jerri Goldman, and he's scheduled to golf 36 holes tomorrow at TPC in Scottsdale, and he agreed that he can 'see' you between rounds and sign off on the 'surgery.' Look, the new MLBPA agreement means that the media will never have access to genuine health-status info, so there's no chance this can leak out. We'll keep you parked on the 40-man while we try to work out a trade somewhere, mmmmkay?

hahahaha
seriously monkeyball, I was just thinking along those lines. But anyway, when I see an injury like this, it makes me both worried and excited. Kielty is a useful player, when used properly, but I definitely like the higher risk/higher reward possibility of opening a spot for Durazo and/or Goleski. Both just seem to have far more upside- Goleski because he has been tearing it up, and Durazo because we know that OLD Durazo was 3 times the offensive weapon of Bobby Kielty...

Durazo
Why? He can't even play first base! He's a good hitter but we have a DH.

Can't we trade Kielty? Please?
I love Ronny Mac, but enough of this only-bats-against-lefties nonsense.

It's Pretty in Pink all over again.  Kielty is Duckie.  Goleski is Blane.  And Billy Beane is Molly Ringwald.  You know what to do, Billy.

Gain weight and disappear
into obscurity?

Anyhoo...Nice to see the A's are getting an early start on their absurd spate of random injuries. Almost didn't make it to the first game without one.

Not looking good
for the"Heatmiser". Poor bastard, I feel bad for the guy but it looks like this will really improve Goleski's chances of sticking around Oakland.
