Winter Meetings: Open Rumor Thread
The Winter Meetings start today, and its time for the rumors to come out of the woodwork, with chaos abound.
So here are a few of the rumors that effect the A's that I've found thus far;
-A's are asking for a kings ransom for Dan Haren, asking for two blue chip prospects and another prospect.
Beane asked the Yankees for two of Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, and Ian Kennedy for Haren. With the Red Sox it was two of Clay Buchholz, Jon Lester, and Jacoby Ellsbury. The Mets would have to pony up Carlos Gomez and Fernando Martinez.
-The Orioles are asking for a lot in return for Miguel Tejada, so there goes the Crosby and Kotsay for Tejada ideas. O's are talking the Angels, and are asking for Brandon Wood and Jared Weaver.
-Erik Bedard has told the Orioles that he will not sign an extension, meaning another good pitcher will be on the trade market. The RedSox and Mets have inquired about him.
-Ben Sheets might be on the trade block, the RedSox inquired about him.
-Johan Santana might be dealt today, and the battle is between the Yankees and RedSox. Twins are pissed at Hank Steinbrenner, accusing him of player tampering by saying that Santana said he would only accept a trade to NYY or BOS, where the Twins say he didn't.
-Miguel Cabrera rumors are starting to surface again with the Angels, but the Angels sound pissed and the Marlins are asking for a huge package, then changing their minds and asking for more.
-Padres thinking about resigning Mike Piazza. If Piazza does sign somewhere, and does not accept Arbirtation, he will net us a Supplimentary Pick.
-Shannon Stewart was the other FA we offered Arbitration to, but no rumors.
-Both Jake Peavy and Brandon Webb might get extensions, though I am not sure if this would make the Padres and DBacks more or less likely to try to go for a starter.
-Speculation is that the Brewers might be a good fit for Huston Street.

TNR and NRO both reported that ...
... but ascribed the eventual cause differently.
Yeah, but
NRO's story was from a gullible reporter who just repeated what a con man for the apocalypse told him, and the TNR reporter's story was fact-checked by his wife.
I entered that fray today by
suggesting the title of this post, though I suggested the simpler "NRO loves war, commas."
No more Carlos Quentin mock trade to the A's

Swisher to Chicago???
An item on MLB Trade Rumors reports that the Cubs are interested in Swisher.
Developing...
I don't know what to think about that
I'd imagine we'd only trade Swisher if we were trading Haren/Blanton and got several good OF in return, thus pushing Swisher (or Buck) out of the mix.
I'd really miss Swish
but Beane will trade anyone if the deal is good enough -- regardless of whether we're "contending" or "rebuilding".
That said, my guess is that this story, like 90% of the hot-stove talk we'll hear today, ends up going nowhere.
That convo starts with Hill and Pie
Probably would have to add in a third marginal guy, like a Murton or Cedeno. We can send them back an ok bullpen arm too if they desire.

lol I forgot how awesome Swisher's contract is
5 years/$26.75M (2007-11), plus 2012 club option
07:$0.7M, 08:$3.5M, 09:$5.3M, 10:$6.75M, 11:$9M,
12:$10.25M club option ($1M buyout)
Yeah erase my previous thought I don't think the cubs have enough for us, unless they want to ship Hill, Pie, and Vitters or something along those lines.

if we acquire Hill ...
... would he be a Hill of Beane's?
Koyie Hill?
Or is there some other Hill I'm not aware of?
Because Koyie Hill is godawful. He'd be the #5 catcher on Oakland's depth chart, and would drop to #6 if Recker succeeds in AA.
The return for Swisher
would have to be ridonkulous before the A's should even think about moving him. I'm talking like Soto-Pie-Atkins-Samardzija ridonkulous. Trade their entire AAA team plus everyone under 25 on the MLB roster ridonkulous. Zambrano and 50% of his salary ridonkulous.
Not bloody likely.
I'm sure that was before they acquired Quentin,
but who knows.

Elijah Dukes traded to Nationals
It's official now.
Wow Milledge, and Dukes in the same OF, that can
be volatile, and talented.
by theblackpearl on Dec 3, 2007 12:33 PM PST up reply actions
Along with Wily Mo Pena
That's a whole lot of talent, and a whole of trouble. Manny Acta is going to earn his money in 2008.
by BlameChannel53 on Dec 3, 2007 12:35 PM PST up reply actions
So,
wearing bling, dabbling in rap, and wearing a big cross as jewelry is a Bad Thing?
The linking of Milledge and Dukes is ridiculous.
No, noone knows for sure, but all the reports out
of NY, was Milledge was on the verge of being a clubhouse cancer.
by theblackpearl on Dec 3, 2007 1:21 PM PST up reply actions
A couple years ago,
before and after Scott Kazmir was traded for Victor "can be fixed in 10 minutes" Zambrano, there were the same damn reports in the NYC tabloids.
Kazmir was rumoured to be a clubhouse cancer. His character was anonymously assassinated in the tabloids by Al Leiter, John Franco.
He was even rumoured to have a drug problem: coke, IIRC.
He was rumoured to be stubborn and unwilling to listen to Rick Peterson.
Oh yeah, when David Wright was tearing through the minors, those same tabloids were baying for him to be traded because he was "overrated".
are Pittsburgh tabloids ...
... wrighting for Bay to be traded?
Remember
I'm a Milledge fan, so I'm not disparaging him. However, Milledge is definitely high maintenance, as is Wily Mo Pena. Dukes is criminally insane as far as I can tell. Like I said, Manny Acta has his hands full, but the upside is very large for the Nats if they can massage all those egos at once.
by BlameChannel53 on Dec 3, 2007 1:27 PM PST up reply actions
Milledge is
"high maintenance" only if you're a manager like Willie Randolph an and idiot org like the Mets.
Scott Kazmir was also supposedly "high maintenance", according to the Mets.
Wearing bling is "high maintenance"? Dabbling in rap is "high maintenance"?
Does this make him a little less high maintenance
and a little more Elijah.
Prior to the 2003 amateur draft, he was expected to be among the top three selections, but as draft day approached, press reports from 2002 resurfaced regarding Milledge's expulsion from Northside Christian High School after his junior year for allegedly having sex with a 15-year-old girl.[4][5] He subsequently transferred to Lakewood Ranch High School where he finished his education and amateur baseball career.
As a result of the incident, Milledge was passed over in the 2003 amateur draft until the Mets selected him as the twelfth overall pick in the first round. The Mets began contract negotiations with Milledge, but the talks were interrupted in early August 2003, when the Mets learned of allegations of additional sexual misconduct against Milledge during his time at Northside. The Mets completed a private investigation of the matter and, satisified with the results, signed Milledge to a contract with a $1.9 million bonus.

Big deal
So he was a high school junior/senior hooking up with a freshman girl?
by pickinmachine on Dec 3, 2007 2:01 PM PST up reply actions
NO.
I have posted this before in a prior post.
He had underage CONSENSUAL sex with a girl 1 1/2 years young than him. Basically, the girl fellated him.
Dukes threatened to KILL his wife. And his own children.
They must expel
a lot of people from Northside Christian High School.
I'm going to call Milledge
a poor man's Corey Brown.
OK . . .
As I've said, I'm a fan of Milledge and think he's going to be a star in this league, and that his makeup has been overly emphasized. However, I'm not going to pretend that Milledge does not have makeup issues. The Mets couldn't wait to get rid of Milledge despite his undeniable talent, and anytime that happens it raises suspicion. It has nothing to do with Milledge wearing bling or dabbling in rap.
by BlameChannel53 on Dec 3, 2007 1:55 PM PST up reply actions
the all jerk team
since they got rid of Schneider maybe they're going to get AJ Pierzynski to catch and bring in John Rocker to close. Going outside the sport, I'm sure Marbury could play a mean second base.
I thought the all-jerk team was ...
... whichever team Kris Benson played for.
And if the ChiSox send them Lee Roy Brown ...
... it'll be the baddest OF in history.

Yeah,
Milledge and Dukes are African American; ergo Milledge == Dukes.
Milledge dabbles in rap, wears bling, and used to have cornrows. OMG.!!!! Teh horror!
!
Dukes promised to kill his "dawg" of a wife and their children.
You're right ... but ...
Milledge certainly doesn't deserve to be linked with Dukes ... but the criticisms of him are more serious (in terms of attitude, work ethic, coachability) than you're getting at ...
Really?
According to the NYC tabloids? According to Wallace Matthews? Gary Cohen? Jayson "Shannon Stewart for MVP" Stark in whose opinion the Mets trading Kazmir for Victor "can be fixed in 10 minutes" Zambrano was a good thing?
Scott Kazmir was also alleged by the NYC tabloids, and unnamed Mets sources to have "attitude problems". Kazmir was also alleged by, Rick Peterson, among others, to have "coachability issues".
And according to Bill Plashcke, Matt Kemp, James Loney etc have "attitude problems" too.
I don't know how credible they are ...
I'm just saying, what "they say" about him is more serious than what you suggested.
Well I am an African American male, and I am the
one who made the link, so it is definitely not racial.

Here is another potential move
3:09 p.m., from Steve Phillips • There are rumblings that the Pirates and Indians are talking about a potential Jason Bay trade.
Makes a lot of sense
The Indians need to go all-in with their pocket Aces this year. Sabathia isn't realistically re-signable for them. And I haven't heard a peep about their activity so far.
Huston for Corey Hart
this trade is not that impossible considering the we desperately need an outfielder who can play all positions as well as hit for power from the right-side. Street is exactly what the Brewers need to shore-up their bullpen after cordero left for more money. The trade also makes sense in due to the fact that the Brewers have an abundance of power in their lineup.
Another possibility would be Huston for JJ Hardy and a PTNL.
Thoughts?

If it's a rumor, who's the source?
suggestion, but
take a look at Corey Hart's line from last year: http://thebaseballcube.com/players/H...
he's 25, but he has already had alot of MLB seasoning. he's extremely fast and an excellent base-stealer. his defense is superb.
A line of 24 HRs, 81 RBIs, (where most were taken by Prince Fielder) 23/7 SB/CS, almost 900 OPS
Hart's 2007 contract was 395,000$
Huston's was 380,000$ I believe
I go to University of Wisconsin-Madison but am from the Bay Area so I got to watch this guy rake for the Brewers last season. I think he is the perfect addition to the team and someone needs to take Kotsay's contract, PLEASE ORIOLES!

O's asking for Jones, Marrow and Clement from M's
for Bedard. If we could get that bounty for either Haren or Blanton (preferably Blanton), I'd go for it in an instant.
Granted, Bavasi would have to be cracked out of his mind, but then again, as above, if you just convince him to gamble with chicken fingers...
Holy crap
I would seriously consider trading Blanton for Jones straight up. And if "Marrow" means Brandon Morrow, those are some pretty good throw-ins (though I'm not sure what we'd do with Clement besides flip him to someone else).
The problem with trading with Baltimore is that Angelos -- yes, I'm blaming the owner in this case, not whatever poor guy has to be his GM -- grossly overrates proven veterans and grossly underrates unproven prospects. That's why it's a fool's game to try to get Bedard or Tejada out of the O's.
If we're going to trade with the Orioles, we should forget about those guys and concentrate on trying to unload Kotsay on them.
Clement is better than Suzuki
And hey, we could still go with that tandum anyways. That, or try to get Wlad. But I'd rather have Clement over Suzuki, and Wlad wouldn't have a place on the team if we acquired Jones, as it would fill the OF out.
Over on Lookout Landing
Jeff says he'd be interested in trading the Jones-Morrow-Clement package for Haren (but not for Santana or Bedard).
Anyone else on board for this? I think it's a win-win. I really really want Adam Jones. He's a stud and he's a perfect fit for our team's needs.
Shit. If Bavasi is really offering that for Bedard, let's call up Flanagan and tell him to pull the trigger then flip the whole package to us. That way he gets Haren for Bedard. He's gotta like that, right? Heck, I'll throw in Kotsay, too.
Despite my love of Haren's Talibanic solemnity,
I am compelled to approve this trade.
Got to be something in it for Baltimore, though. An escrow fee, as it were. Give 'em Robnett.

that Jeff backed down on this offer. He had said he'd be "interested", but when I stated it more bluntly he said he wouldn't go through with it as currently formulated.
If we were real GMs, and not just fans pretending, I'd still look for some other combination built around Adam Jones.
If Billy really wants to trade one of our pitcher
he must be salivating over this.

Barry Praver, the agent for free-agent starter Carlos Silva, arrived at the Opryland this afternoon after attending Silva's wedding in Venezuela over the weekend. Now Praver and his partner, Scott Shapiro, will try to negotiate a four- or five-year deal for Silva for more than $10 million annually. Silva and Kyle Lohse might have to wait for the Johan Santana, Dan Haren and Erik Bedard sweepstakes to play out before teams start getting serious.
10 Mil for Silva, back that thang up, as the young folks would say.
All this makes Randy Wolf's contract
look like a potential bargain - I thought the A's might take a shot at Wolf as the "guy who could make Blanton tradeable and still try to contend in 2008," but I guess Wolf's name wasn't enough to intrigue Lew & Co.
Rotoworld says...
According to MLB.com, the Diamondbacks are interested in Dan Haren and Joe Blanton.
The report suggests that the Diamondbacks would go after Haren first and might then switch their focus to Blanton if the asking price is too high.
From the article...
Urban wants us to go after Alberto Gonzalez, because we need another no-hit, good fielding short stop, since Bobby Crosby, Donnie Murphy and Gregorio Petit arn't enough, right? Gonzalez's line @ AAA was .247/.300/.362/.662...
But if we're looking @ the Yankees, a report earlier said we'd ask for Hughes & Champerlan, so I doubt the Yankees will like that if they can't get Santana for a cheaper price.
Following up what has been mentioned earlier
I never thought to include Chris Young as a potential target in my last diary. At first glance he shouldn't be available but Upton can play CF, in fact Arizona might prefer to have him in CF because of his offensive potential. They have other options for RF.
Blanton for Young sounds like the beginnings of a solid package. I'd still want to see a SP in the mix, maybe Scherzer would be available in this discussion.
So much for the yankees "deadline"?
From Urban's article.
The Yankees have reportedly told Minnesota that their proposal is a take-it-or-leave-it deal that would be pulled from the table late Monday, after which Haren would immediately become New York's primary trade target.
"If they don't get Santana, they'll go hard after Haren," said the source. "And they might even give up more [for Haren] just to make sure they get him."
Quick poll, Santana dealt tonight?
There's no possible way that Santana
will be dealt without advance warning. He's going to insist on an extension before waiving his no-trade clause. Given the leaky ship the Yankees run, there will be at least 48 hours notice before anything is official.
Tigers inquired about Haren
and made Adam Miller available in trade talks, though it'd probably take Miller and the untouchable Cameron Maybin, and another prospect, to get it done, and since the Tigers prob won't do that...
i still think the Dodgers would net us the best package for our weaknesses, especially if we could package Chavez with Blanton or Haren. I really, really want to get a package of Kershaw, LaRoche, Hu and Kemp, but I have no idea how much we'd have to deal to get that package.
We don't have enough to deal for that package
Kemp was reportedly the centerpiece around a Miguel Cabrera package, and Kershaw has been reportedly off limits in all negotiations so far.
We could maybe get Kemp and LaRoche in a deal for Haren, and maybe LaRoche and Hu in a deal for Blanton, but any more than 2 of those four would almost certainly never happen, and Kershaw just isn't happening, period. I don't think the Dodgers even made him available for Santana.

Royals sign Guillen
3yrs 36 million. Didnt see this one coming.
Wow
They overpaid by at least $10 million.
I don't think so
True, it's more than I'd want to pay, but I really don't think 3/36 is so far out of line for Guillen. I think we overestimate his negatives here. His cancerousness has been steadily declining over the years and can reasonably be expected to continue declining. The steroid use was for 2002-2005, and he had a good year in Seattle, in a park that doesn't favor hitters.
Dogers are top suiters for Blanton
The Dodgers have reportedly been the top suitors for Joe Blanton up to this point.
As they were at the trade deadline, when the two sides were believed to be close to a deal. Blanton is also viewed as a more realistic trade target than Dan Haren for the Mets.
And Street's looking for a long term contract.
Houston Street's agent, Alan Hendricks, said Monday he plans to meet Tuesday with A's GM Billy Beane about a possible long-term deal.
The two sides originally talked a couple of months ago. Street is looked at as a long-shot trade possibility should someone bowl the A's over. He should be careful about the long-term deal, as the A's could lock him up and then look to trade him as soon as midseason.
Street, I think, would be wise to get a contract through his arby years, as relievers don't do as well with the Arbitration Court as other players, and he has an injury history, including an almost career threatening one.
So, if the haul is
Maybin
Miller
Prospect
LaRoche
Hu
Prospect
do the A's pull the trigger on the rebuild?
And-- not an insignificant point-- is Beane willing to take on a Boras client?
Make no mistake about it, this is not a contending team in 2008. The rotation would be, not to put too fine a point on it, abysmal (unless Dan Meyer makes a quantum leap forward). Some nice young hitting, but we'd have to expect LaRoche and Hu (and Barton) to take a season or so to settle in at the majors, and it's pretty unrealistic to expect a team with four starting rookie position players (assuming Denorfia gets the center field job next year) and two second-year men to succeed immediately. Maybin obviously needs 1-2 more years' seasoning in the minors.
The strategy at this point would be to take mostly high school players in the '08 draft, then switch to collegians in '09 or '10. Ellis gets re-signed unless his demands are crazy, which they won't be.
I'm torn. I feel like the long-term upside of Maybin/Miller is better than that of Hughes/Kennedy. But the latter is such a sure thing. It's two rotation pieces, on a platter.
I haven't got the answers here... what do you all think?
Are we talking Blanton or Haren?
It it's Blanton, I'm all over Hughes and Kennedy. I get the feeling we're not as appreciative of Blanton as we should be, but at the same time it's likely we get at least one player of his caliber in that deal plus prospects, which is a plus.
I wouldn't trade Haren unless we get a top notch starting pitcher prospect plus a top SS or CFer. There's no reason to trade Haren, a known awesome pitcher with his contract, for someone who's upside is Haren. LaRoche, Hu, and pitching in other words.
The Yankees are uninterested in Blanton
as far as I am able to make out.
I should also add
fireable?
more like firing-squad-able.
by BlameChannel53 on Dec 4, 2007 8:15 AM PST up reply actions
Exactly
Unless you're the Giants ownership, in which case you would make the trade, non-tender Blanton after one year, and then give Cashman a contract extension.
and don't forget the part about ...
... Blanton kicking the team's trainer in the nuts.
I don't know
I just don't see how we fill out a rotation. What do we go with in a couple years, Miller/Gaudin/Cahill/Simmons/Joe Schmoe? The offense would be nice, but the rotation would be have a glarign hole in it EVEN IF Cahill and Miller and Simmons make it out of prospectdom alive. I just don't think we have the pitching depth in this system to jettison out pitchers without getting pitchers back. (Now, Blanton I'd be willing to deal for a hitting centric package to the Dodgers. The Hu/Kemp/LaRoche types would be more than worth it. But Haren needs to bring back good, nearly major league ready pitchers.)
Personally I'd just keep Haren altogether and let him anchor the rotation for the next eight or so years. But I've said that so much I'm starting to sound like a broken record.
by walk off bunt on Dec 4, 2007 9:23 AM PST up reply actions
I know
but Maybin is freaking incredible. It's impossible to overstate how good he is. If the A's could take one prospect in all of baseball free of charge, I suspect he would be the one they'd take.
As for a couple of years from now, I think the A's have enough second-tier prospects (Bailey, Rodriguez, Madsen, Meyer I guess) that I wouldn't be worried about the back end of the rotation. For the front end, I'd say sign CC Sabathia. Yeah, he's going to be crazy expensive, but the A's have the money right now and he's a Bay Area native.
I spose you have a point
And Maybin certainly would be pretty out there manning center for the next decade or so.
Something like Miller/Cahill could be a great 1/2 and Simmons/Gaudin would be a solid 3/4......
Alright what the hell. Sold. (Which, unfortunately, doesn't do a whole lot for anybody or anything related to real life.)

Bad, Bad News
If it is true (the latest mlbtraderumors.com has it) that the Twins are fixing to settle for "only" Crisp, Lester, and Masterson.
This kind of lowers the bar for a possible Haren or Blanton trade, since the Sox are not going to give up two of their "big three".
If the Sox were to give up two of them, then most likely that would set the bar for two of the three top Yankees to come here for Haren.
But who knows, it's just rumors for now!

Not sure how it will affect what is offered for Haren/Blanton.
It could either set the bar, or potentially force teams hands if they feel they have to acquire one of them and give in.

But if the Sox get Santana
there will be extreme pressure on the Yankees to respond.
But that sounds like bs. The Yankees package already offered is way better than that; I think the Twins are just talking that up to get some leverage.
