DLD 12/17/07 - Your laziness = my first DLD
Here's a great graph detailing all the A's on the 40 man roster, plus some prospects who aren't, and the A's extended control over them, courtesy of Ken Arneson over at Catfish Stew. Very helpful for visualizing the future of the team for the next 8 years.
The guys over at Hardball Times think the A's did pretty good in the Haren trade, although without adding any real insight into any of the prospects. I think the general consensus is that...no one knows if Beane came out ahead or behind on this deal. I guess we'll all just have to wait 2 to 3 years and see.
That's all I've got really, I've just been dying to add that graph of A's players all day, and no one could help me out, so I did it myself. Nyah!

The meaning of life?
Love, peace, and Shonen Knife.
In other news:
Journalists assign partial blame for steroid era to other journalists
Wisconsin drunk (possible redundancy) attempts to elude cops by driving through car wash
And this is a very sad story. A man from New Hampshire was a huge fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers....but during his 60 years of life, never managed to make it to Pittsburgh to see them play. His widow took his ashes there yesterday. There's a lesson here for NRAFs -- plan now for AN Day 5!
that's a terrible lesson!
If I follow your drift, then any NRAF who plans on attending AN Day 5 will DIE!!!
more evidence in favor of the Harden trade

She flew 30 ft!
But no broken bones? Wow, I wish Crosby and Harden were that tough. They probably would broken a leg and strained an oblique if that happened to them.
Speaking of THT
I thought it was interesting, but he really failed to prove his point. It's reasonably likely that unbalanced competition is good from a monetary standpoint, but... pro wrestling is good from a monetary standpoint too, and it's a complete joke of a "sport." I have no wish whatsoever to see American sports turn into the WWE.
42's not the meaning of life...
It's just the answer. "The answer" and "the meaning" are two different things. Sometimes, like in this case, it's tough to figure out what the answer... you know, means.
or, in Billy's case ...
... how many Rhodes must a man live down?

The Mulder Legacy
Here is a great blog about the legacy of Mark Mulder.
In sum, the selection of Mark Mulder in 1998, despite being a high-priced selection, has netted the A’s the following:
- 6.5 above-average seasons from a starting pitcher
- 2 above-average seasons from a relief pitcher (with possibly more to come)
- a top first base prospect who is ready to be the team’s everyday first baseman
- a top outfield prospect who is projected as a long-term starter (Gonzalez)
- a 19-year-old left-hander who has a similar profile to a young Mulder (Anderson)
- an outfielder that reminds some of a young Eric Byrnes (Cunningham)
- a young power-hitting first base/DH type (Carter)
- two seasoned left-handers who profile as back-of-the-rotation starters or long relievers

Amazing, isn't it?
It really highlights how important it is for teams to pick the best player available when their draft slot comes up. Over the course of just the named players' inexpensive years -- there could be more in the chain if any of these players are dealt in the future -- the A's will save themselves more than $100 million versus acquiring equivalent players via free agency.
The greatest failure of Beane's tenure is in not understanding/acting on the incredible value that amateur talent represents. The short-term pain of rebuilding that this team will suffer through is a direct result of the failure to acquire enough amateur talent to keep the A's competitive. I hope the money freed up with our lower payroll is used to create more of these Mulder talent chains. Having earlier draft picks will help, but the A's need to spend as well. Winning the amateur talent war is the only long-term way for the A's to compete with the teams that outspend them in the free agent market.

Mulder talent chains
Isn't that what Jennifer's basement was originally equipped with?
I agree somewhat...

The Saga Continues
Maybe it was a good idea not to go after Dukes...
According to the St. Petersburg Times, another woman has asked a judge to protect her from Elijah Dukes, saying he sent her threatening text messages.
Can't we just make it mandatory that all women are protected from Dukes? Amanda E. Reese, who said she dated Dukes between August and October, was granted a temporary injunction for protection against domestic violence on Dec. 10. She is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning to seek extended protection. "At this point, I fear for me and my child's life, due to his past history with his estranged wife," Reese wrote in her petition to the court.
I would personally like to know...
what Dukes does to get so much action, despite the laundry list of children and domestic violence raps against him.
So, uh...
those of you who are interested in blog popularity contests might want to vote for AN here.
(No Blue-Grey sky in this vote! Also, the ads are NESFW.)
How is AN the 15th seed?
That doesn't make any sense at all ...
Can you say "Cinderella Story"?
And it's beats the 21st seed, right?
Who cares we always get disqaulified for our
enginuity, in voting tactics

That's my birthday
I just want one thing from you on my birthday, Billy; I would like you to announce that Kotsay has been released and Carlos Gonzalez is going to be the A's starting CF in 2008.

Brian Roberts admits to steroids use
claims he had one shot of steroids and immediately realized it was wrong.
The pattern we're seeing so far in the admissions:
since the Mitchell Report quotes the trainer as injecting Pettite "two to four times" Petite admits to two
since the Report quites Larry Bigbie as saying Roberts told him he'd used once or twice, Roberts admits to once
it was probably like a snakebite
