nook and jack = shockers
sorry, but that's a real heartbreaker and shocker in both cases.
Nook and Jack were two of the more interesting stories of the baseball year, and I'm personally saddened to hear the news in both cases. While I never got on the Jack train (and still think the a's are consciously self-destructing out of spite), Nook was/is an exciting young player who really helped make the Nationals a pleasure to watch (and a holy terror for Mets fans).
The really sad thing is that one wonders about just a few months ago - did Cust have chemical help in his super slugger summer? Was Nook incredibly fast on the bases for more than one reason?
The older guys don't bother me at all for some reason, but seeing the minor league cinderella and the fastest young guy in the NL get named is a bummer.

I don't think Cust has been associated
with steroids for several years, and I believe the evidence linking him to steroids is weak (hearsay). So odds appear to be that Cust will not join any group facing sanctions, and that his 2007 season was accomplished free of PEDs - though we can't say how PEDs may or may not have impacted his recovery from a hand injury he had a couple years ago.
And no way is Nook Logan the fastest guy in the NL - have you forgotten that Bengie Molina switched leagues?
and of course reyes
is an obvious candidate
I'd say the PEDs CAUSED the injury
It was already suspicious to begin with, and reading that Adam Piatt had the exact same injury-- carpal tunnel syndrome-- as a side effect of roiding just makes it more so.
Nook Logan an exciting player?
This Nook Logan? The Nook Logan who put up an OPS+ of 72? Who has as many career homeruns as Jason Kendall had last year?
how many a's stole 23 bases this year?
nook was a clutch leadoff man. he also played inspired D (as did Zimmerman, despite what the stats show). they knocked out the mets with some killer offense, and nook had more than al little to do with that.
He was inspired ... and clutch ...
not good ... he can't be everything to everyone ...
swish + scoots + chavez + ellis
collectively less 2007 SBs than a guy with a 304 obp. what does that say? is nook that good or was the a's infield that deeply horrible?
what does that say about you or about them?
Oh, I don't know
Crosby would have a fair number of steals if he was ever on base to begin with.
Hey, I can play that game
Logan had more steals than Adam Dunn, Pat Burrell, Ryan Howard and Victor Martinez combined, too!
Man, that guy is one hell of a ball player. He's like the MVP! Except that everyone seems to think that things like "hitting for power" are more important than "running fast."
Philistines.
those would be valid comparisons
sadly, the names i mentioned were the actual 2007 infielders who got the most starts at their respective positions and not just a list of the nl's slowest baserunners.
But Logan's not an infielder ...
seriously ... would you be raving about Bobby Crosby if he stole ten more bases?
we both know that bobby will never bat 270
so why even mention him in the same breath as an offensive powerhouse like nook logan
I can't tell whether your act is sarcasm
or just the inability (or unwillingness, I suppose) to reason logically from premises.
If it's the former-- please stop.
Bobby Crosby has batted .270 ...
Now the question is ... how long will it take Nook Logan, offensive powerhouse, to hit his third career home run? How about his first multi-home run season?
will = future tense
2005 = the distant past, viewed through a dim haze of endless injuries and 220 batting
you'd want to add "again" ...
because, otherwise, it ain't true ...
Now I'm not saying Bobby Crosby is any good ... but Nook Logan? Seriously?
Nook
I don't know that he was good or clutch, but he was one of the few players not wearing an A's jersey that I'd pay attention to. He always seemed like a really good player every time I'd catch him on Extra Innings. Maybe I just caught him on his good days.
thank you
anyone who actually likes baseball and had access to the whole mlb schedule would have really enjoyed seeing the nats light up that horrible stadium. i believe they finished 500 at home. nook, chico, and all of the underpaid infield superstars (zimmerman, ronnie, dmitri etc) were a real pleasure to watch.
Since Manny Acta is probably
the most "sabermetric" manager in baseball today, this is not really all that surprising.
Normally I figure managers' influence on personnel is pretty limited, but their behavior seems to have taken a notable uptick in intelligence since he took over.
You're giving Acta too much credit
And I say this as an Acta fan.
Bowden has always been able to find good position players. His problem has always been finding pitchers. It still appears to be that case: the Nats have piching problems that were masked by their ballpark.
Nook Logan is terrible

Terribly exciting or excitingly terrible?
Only Nook himself truly knows.
high OPS = consciously self-destructing
... out of spite, of course.
tantrums over bay area politics
and slumping real estate actually have much, much more to do with it. the dismantling of the team is just a side effect.
ZOMG They traded Marco Scutero!!1!
The team is so being dismantl3d...
keep laughing
as we get a bus full of scrubs for a cy young contender.
sorry that it took the haren trade for this to become obvious to some folks. i noticed it about a dozen games in back in april.
Wow, notaha8er - you're so smart!!!!
Except for mistaking "scrubs" for "top prospects," I s'pose.
time will tell about that one
of course, knowing the a's, they'll show amazing talent and get all of 50 ABs due to injuries. still, that's about 40 more than I expect from Buck next year.
So, be honest ...
did you choose your screen name out of irony?
if i was the CGV-filing type
i'd file one for this comment.
you expect 10 at bats from travis buck next year?
you're either a joke account or a troll who needs to go away.
I'm open to the idea that ...
... the housing/mortgage/credit market crisis may ultimately scuttle the Wolfftown plan.
However, you're the one who made the implicit connection between Cust and the team "self-destructing":
While I never got on the Jack train (and still think the a's are consciously self-destructing out of spite), Nook was/is an exciting young player who really helped make the Nationals a pleasure to watch (and a holy terror for Mets fans)
If you're going to write that way, you need to expect that people will attempt to make sense of what you're saying. Apparently, acquiring and giving playing time to Cust, who outhit everyone else on the team, constitutes "self-destructing." Even your clarification here leaves that open.
And, given your clarification that the A's are "self-destructing" due to "tantrums over bay area politics and slumping real estate actually," how, exactly, are those two factors "out of spite"? Lew is the secret malevolent force cratering the value of tranched subprime mortgages, and he's doing it because of his resentment at the California environmental review process? You have a view of Wolff even more cartoonishly supervillainous than FSU or I could dream of.
hopefully the haren trade
makes my point a little easier to understand
Lets get real...
At least another current A's player has used or is currently using some type of PED. Its not a question of ethics so much it is a shame that it continues to be allowed to occur.

I actually...
...did have Nook as a first ballot HOFer, but now with this evidence I'm probably going to vote him in second ballot; that way I show that I don't condone steroid use.
