Humanitarian Ken Korach
I'm a supporter of Baseball at Oakland Technical High School (where Rickey Henderson went to school).
We've been fundraising to get a new field that is actually close to the school. We usually play at Bushrod Field; which is about a 1.5 miles from our campus. Its not a great field. Soccer players destroy it every weekend ...
Well we have gotten a lot support from KTVU, Alameda County Supervisors and other members of the community.
I just wanted to publicly acknowlegde Ken Korach, who gave $5,000 to help build our "Field of Dreams!"
I don't know how much money MLB announcers make, but I know its nowhere near enough for all the joy they bring to us.
Thanks Ken!
Here's some info for any AN folks who'd like to help out:

You guys should really have a credit card
donation system available. It takes a small chunk of donations but it is definitely worth it. A good chunk of CC donors would not give otherwise. I, for instance, am generally one of those people. I've done plenty of fund raising and -- seriously -- I cannot emphasize this enough -- it is absolutely worth it.
2nd -- after looking at the field site, I went to check out the school's home page. I was excited to see that the Boys Soccer team won the OAL. The brief article confused me, though:
The Oakland Tech Boys Soccer team defeated Skyline today, 3-1, to claim Tech's first-ever OAL Championship in the sport.
I'm pretty sure that Oakland Tech won the conference in 1996. I'm pretty sure it went undefeated in conference, cruising to the title. I'm pretty sure it then lost a 2 game series to the SFUSD champions based on the most retarded setup ever.
It was a 2 game series, both games resulted in a tie. 1-1 at OT's field -- Bushrod and 0-0 at their field, Kezar Stadium. Because they scored at OT's home field (and not withstanding the fact that we shut them out at theirs) they were awarded the transbay title, no OT, no shoot out, nothing. I was so pissed off.
Anyway, short story long, I'm pretty sure I played in that game at Kezar Stadium. I'm pretty sure I have an OAL Champions Trophy at my parents' house. I'm pretty sure I went to Oakland Tech and I'm pretty sure that this year's team isn't the first to take conference.

I assume you didn't play baseball at Tech?
We also practiced at Bushrod (but thankfully didn't have to play the games there as Tech does), and played some practice games against them. So if you did, we may have played against each other.
And yeah, Kenko is the man. If I had money and was inclined to give it to a school, Oakland schools seem like a better idea than the private school I went to that is not hurting for money...

you don't often hear those four grouped together
especially not wrestling and swimming, given the opposite nature of the dominant body types for each

I have a better body for wrestling ...
but I was a much better swimmer. Sadly, though, being less than 6' meant that I had no future as a freestyle sprinter.
The swimming/wrestling body types aren't that different. They both rely on a high strength to weight ratio and good flexibility.

Dear Ken: please give mikeA $10.
Seriously, that's a great gesture by the Cap'n.
I hope he set it up as a challenge to be matched by others in the organization, all of whom have a stake in East Bay and inner-city baseball.

It's an old joke
If vegetarians eat vegetables,
what do humanitarians eat?

while sitting in their humanichairs?
